Do Straight People Use PrEP to Prevent HIV?

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medication that can prevent HIV infection. It is currently the most effective form of HIV prevention. However, marketing efforts for the drug have historically been targeted toward men who have sex with men. For that reason, a recent study first reported by Yahoo! showed that, compared to LGBTQ+ people, straight people rarely used PrEP.

The gap in messaging for the heterosexual community

Heterosexual individuals account for a significant proportion of new HIV diagnoses. However, PrEP messaging primarily targets the gay and bisexual community, resulting in a lack of information for the heterosexual population. This has left a gap in knowledge about the medication for the heterosexual community.

In 2020, 22% of new HIV cases reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were in heterosexual individuals. For the first time in a decade, the United Kingdom reported more new HIV cases among heterosexuals than LGBTQ+ people.

    Stigma surrounding PrEP

Perceptions that HIV is a “gay disease” have played a role in the struggle to broaden the message for HIV care and PrEP. This stigma has contributed to low rates of medication uptake by the heterosexual community.
“I believe there is stigma attached to PrEP that unfortunately keeps straight/cisgender people from accessing it at the rates this population should,” Dr. Monica Gandhi, MPH, tells Healthline. “The CDC estimates that 1.2 million people require pre-exposure prophylaxis in the US, but fewer than 25% are taking it.”

Addressing the gap in knowledge and access

Despite the gap in PrEP knowledge among the heterosexual community, we can take steps to improve this situation. Tele-PrEP services and the new federal budget to cover PrEP for the uninsured can make the medication more accessible.

Additionally, educating clinicians and young people on HIV and the benefits of PrEP can help combat the stigma.

“The troubling CDC statistics means we have to redouble our efforts to reach heterosexual, cisgender women and men with our PrEP messaging. In fact, two of the biggest PrEP trials that led to the approval of PrEP were in heterosexual couples,” Dr. Gandhi says.

Nearly 1 in 7 people living with HIV are unaware of their status. Getting tested and considering PrEP can help individuals stay safe and protected.

64 Photos That Prove Masculinity Can Be Queer AF

Jordan used to be scared of masculinity. Who can blame them? As an out, proud queer kid Jordan was bullied for not performing masculinity as society expected. It was his femininity that all but alienated him from men. He carried with him a fear of male-centric spaces like locker rooms and public restrooms. For this reason, Jordan, despite being passionate about photography, only shot women. They carried this fear into adulthood, but eventually, photography would be their saving grace.

    Overcoming A Fear of Masculinity

Now navigating the world as a queer non-binary creative, Jordan’s photography has bloomed into something transformative. The fingerprint of his journey is on every photo he takes. We’ve compiled a collection of photos by Jordan that explore masculinity in all of its complexities. Photos that prove any one person can embody both masculinity and femininity.

  • This Is What Happens When AI Generates 100 Gay Couples

This Is What Happens When AI Generates 100 Gay Couples

We have indeed entered a new era of AI technology. As this innovation makes waves in the art world people are asking, is this tech viable? Are tools like DALL-E 2Midjourney, and NightCafe part of a technological renaissance or a short-lived trend? The answer you receive to this question will depend greatly on who you ask. However, one thing is certain. This technology definitely has its limitations. After one creator used the tool to generate 100 gay couples it’s clear that one of those limitations is diversity.

    Looking to the Experts

Meet Dan Leveille, Director of Product Marketing at Deviant Art. Leveille is also the developer of Equaldex, a tool that tracks the progress of LGBTQ+ rights across the world. Clearly well-versed in both tech and art, Leveille is uniquely positioned to opine on this particular matter. This is especially true because he frequently puts AI tools to the test. Leveille made headlines earlier this year when he used these tools to generate concept art of Tom Holland as Link from Legend of Zelda. He also used the tool to fan-cast all of the characters in the franchise.

What Do Gay Couples Look Like?

Leveille took the tools to task once again to test them on another prompt. “I asked Midjourney for 100 gay couples using the same simple prompt: ‘photo of a gay couple.’” said Leveille on Instagram. The result certainly raises eyebrows. As detailed as the images are almost every single couple is white, young, and skinny. In fact, many of them look almost identical.

    White Is Not the Default

It’s not impossible for these tools to generate people of color, but unless you ask for it, Midjourney delivers exclusively white, young, and skinny. Whether this is a result of the tool itself or a product of the sources it draws from is unclear. Either way, it’s plain to see that the tool is failing to compensate for a very real lack of diversity. White is not the default. Skinny is not the default. Young is not the default. There is no excuse for this misstep.

“Midjourney is one of the most amazing technologies I’ve ever used,” said Leveille. “But the lack of diversity is really concerning. 99% of the time, it defaults to White people unless you’ve specified.” Keep scrolling for more examples of the images the prompt generated. Take this as a reminder of the uphill battle faced by gay couples that aren’t white, skinny, and young.

  • This Artist’s Paintings Depict Gay Religious Symbolism

This Artist’s Paintings Depict Gay Religious Symbolism

Religion has long been a muse and source of inspiration for the great artists of the world. Unfortunately, artists from the Renaissance era had very little room to play around with explicitly gay imagery. Today artists have the freedom to explore every facet of their identity and areas of interest—although not without certain restrictions. Gay folks have a complex relationship with religion. There are gay religious people, of course, but many gay people have been scarred by religious institutions and family members. This doesn’t mean queer people are any less spiritual, it just means there’s more baggage. For artists like Rene Farias, baggage like this is a deep well of inspiration.

    Meet Rene Farias

Currently living in Barcelona, Rene Farias works primarily with watercolor, oil, and graphite. With influences like Caravaggio, Bouguereau, Banksy, Norman Rockwell, and Tom of Finland, Farias has a vision that feels fully realized. His work is laden with gay religious symbolism, which has opened him up to quite a bit of criticism—particularly from the Catholic community. Being a queer artist, Farias also has to deal with homophobia regularly. As an artist that frequently explores taboos and stereotypes, this is something Farias appears to take in his stride. Although he has more freedom to explore his subject than many of his idols, Farias doesn’t exactly have free reign. “My biggest viewing platform is Instagram and Facebook,” says Farias. “Many times I have ideas that I must modify so that these platforms allow me to exhibit my work without censoring it or closing my account.”

Despite this Farias is determined to share his art with the world. Unafraid to pick at the seams of femininity and masculinity while deconstructing theology, Farias is resolute. If you ask us, his poignant work would certainly be admired by his forbearers. Follow Rene Farias on Instagram and shop his artwork, which ships worldwide, online. Without further ado, let’s dive in.

    More Where That Came From

As amazing as it may seem, this was merely a sampling of Farias’ work. He doesn’t just create gay religious imagery either. A quick glance at his catalog and you’ll see recurring imagery from nature and mythology. Mermaids, minotaurs, fairies, snakes, and butterflies are the mainstays of his art, each interpretation a complex layer of influences. We highly recommend purchasing a piece for yourself or at least following Rene Farias on Instagram.

    Get to Know Freddy Krave

We spoke to Freddy about their work, both past, and present, as well as how it’s been perceived. Keep scrolling for a sampling of their photography and to learn more about life as the King of queer erotic photography.

Gayety: How have your friends and family responded to your line of work?

Freddy Krave: I’m very lucky cuz both my friends and family are very supportive and love my art. I was just at my mom’s for Christmas and she wanted to surprise me [by] showing me that she hung 3 of my self-portraits in her living room. That was so funny but also so cute.

Gayety: Has your relationship with photography changed since you first started? If yes, how?

Freddy Krave: I think my relationship with photography didn’t change. I have the same passion that I had when I first started and it’s really one of the few things that give me joy. What changed is definitely the quality of my work. When I look at my oldest pictures I can definitely see how much I evolved and it’s a very nice feeling.

Gayety: Who are some of your favorite erotic photographers and/or models in the game?

Freddy Krave: I have to admit that I always prefer someone from the past, Mapplethorpe will always be my biggest inspiration and his work will always be one of the best forms of art I’ve ever seen. I really like this greek photographer […] His name is Kostis Fokas and his work on the human body is pretty unique in my opinion. And about the models I really don’t know, I usually photograph people that aren’t models cuz I like to make them become models. Does this sound weird?

Gayety: What are some challenges or obstacles that come with shooting erotic photography that people may not be aware of?

Freddy Krave: Definitely one of the most important things is the model’s level of confidence. Sometimes I find people that really wanna be photographed and when they’re in front of me they just don’t know how to act or they feel a little bit embarrassed. It’s my job to help them so they can relax and have fun during the shooting process. It comes naturally now cuz I’ve been doing this for more than a decade. I really know how to work with people and get the best from them. Erotic photography will forever be charming to me cuz you really need to trust the photographer and knowing that people trust me is the best feeling.

Gayety: What do you hope for the future of your photography? Do you have any plans in the works?

Freddy Krave: When I was younger I had so many dreams. Now I’m at that point where I just do what I like and if an opportunity comes I’ll be happy to take it. I prefer to just live day by day without making big plans. Usually, these big plans never end the way you planned. But hey, if magazines want to work with me I’m here. I just want my art to reach as many people as possible.

Luke Evans Responds to James Bond Casting Speculation

How do you take your martini? Personally, we like them shaken, not stirred, and very very gay. If you’re like us, there’s still a chance you may get the martini of your dreams. People are speculating that an openly gay man will play the next 007. So much so that Luke Evans has finally spoken up about it.

    The Dream Cast

As you may have heard, Daniel Craig finally hung up his trilby hat last year. The star announced his retirement, finishing off his tenure so someone else could take over. It wasn’t long before fans began dream-casting the roll. Many of them are the usual suspects you might expect, but a select few grabbed our interest. Regé-Jean Page from Bridgerton, Rachel Weisz from Disobedience, and Janelle Monáe from Glass Onion are some of our favorites.

But Will James Bond Be Gay?

Another particularly fitting role would be Luke Evans from Beauty and the Beast and The Hobbit. There’s no denying that Evans has that 007 quality, and being raised in the U.K. can’t hurt either. Each of these selections, and many more, would be a new and interesting take on the beloved character. No matter who your dream cast is, there’s no denying that Bond would benefit from a fresh perspective. It’s high time for a reinterpretation that deviates ever so slightly from the source material.

We aren’t the only ones who would love to see Evans in the role. Evans himself is at the point where he can no longer ignore the speculation. In a recent interview with BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen, Evans opened up about the prospect of being Bond. “The new James Bond?” said Evans. “Who knows? Nobody knows.” We’d love to think that Evans is just playing coy with us, but the actor went on. “I mean it would be nice, wouldn’t it?” he told BBC One presenter Matt Tebbutt. “Don’t jinx it.”

What About a Bisexual James Bond?

Okay okay, we’ll try our best. Given the history of Hollywood casting, it’s probably best not to get our hopes up. Even if Evans gets the role, it’s unlikely that the character himself would be queer. Also, just the thought of the ensuing uproar is exhausting. Then again, we would gladly face it for a gay—or bisexual—James Bond. Even the biggest gay-Bond naysayers have to admit a bisexual James Bond feels very on brand for the secret agent.

If all of this speculation has left you Luke Evans hungry, we’ve got you. Evans is currently featured in the Apple TV+ thriller series Echo 3. There he plays a former U.S. soldier who is on a mission to Colombia to rescue his sister. If you’d like to see him in something queerer, Evans is currently working on a drama called Our Son with Billy Porter. Evans and Porter play divorcing husbands who are fighting for custody of their 8-year-old son.

One thing is for sure, Bond or no Bond, Luke Evans has plenty more to offer us.
