First-Look at Daniel Craig in Luca Guadagnino’s Film: ‘Queer’

Luca Guadagnino, the visionary director behind Call Me by Your Name and Bones and All, is back with another film that’s sure to make waves—Queer.

Based on William S. Burroughs’ 1985 novel, this romantic drama is set in the 1940s and stars none other than Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey. With its premiere set for September 3 at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, Queer is already generating buzz, especially within the LGBTQ+ community.

    A Star-Studded Cast

Daniel Craig, known worldwide as James Bond, takes on the role of William Lee, an American expat navigating the complexities of love and identity in post-war America. Opposite him is Drew Starkey, the Outer Banks heartthrob, who plays Eugene Allerton, the object of Lee’s affection. The chemistry between these two is expected to sizzle on screen, bringing Burroughs’ intense and emotional narrative to life.

The cast doesn’t stop there. Joining Craig and Starkey are an array of talented actors, including Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why), Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore), Drew Droege, Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread), Ariel Schulman, and rising star Colin Bates. Each brings their unique flair to the film, contributing to a rich and dynamic ensemble that promises to captivate audiences.

Here’s the official sneak peek at Daniel Craig in Queer!

    Guadagnino’s Signature Style

Guadagnino showcases his lush cinematography, meticulous attention to detail, and ability to capture the nuances of human emotion in Queer. He sets the film against the backdrop of the 1940s, a time of significant social change, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community. This historical context adds depth and authenticity to the story, making the struggles and triumphs of its characters even more poignant.

Fans of Guadagnino’s work can expect the same visual beauty and emotional depth that made Call Me by Your Name a critical darling. His ability to blend the personal with the universal, capturing both the intimate and the epic, is likely to shine through in Queer, making it one of the most anticipated films of the year.

    The Source Material: Burroughs’ Queer

William S. Burroughs’ novel Queer is a semi-autobiographical tale that delves deep into themes of love, obsession, and identity. Set in the 1940s, it follows William Lee as he becomes infatuated with a younger man, Eugene Allerton. The novel explores unrequited love and the search for self with raw honesty, and Guadagnino is expected to bring this emotional depth to the screen.

Burroughs’ portrayal of these themes was groundbreaking at the time and remains relevant today. Queer not only reflects the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community in the past but also resonates with modern audiences, offering a powerful narrative about love and longing.

A Film for the LGBTQ+ Community

Queer is more than just a film; it’s a significant moment for LGBTQ+ representation in cinema. With its focus on a complex, emotionally rich love story between two men, it offers a narrative that’s still too rare in mainstream movies. We expect the film to resonate deeply with LGBTQ+ audiences, providing both representation and a powerful exploration of relatable themes.

Excitement surrounds Queer, and with Guadagnino at the helm, the film is poised to make a lasting impact on LGBTQ+ cinema. As audiences prepare for its debut at the Venice International Film Festival, the anticipation continues to build.

    Looking Ahead

As Queer gets ready for its world premiere, the buzz around it only grows louder. A stellar cast, a visionary director, and a story that’s as timely as it is timeless make this film one of the standout releases of the year. Whether you’re a fan of Guadagnino’s previous work or simply someone who loves a good love story, Queer promises to deliver.

Mark your calendars for September 3, because Queer is one premiere you won’t want to miss.

  • Tom Daley Bids Farewell to Diving After Five Olympic Games

Tom Daley Bids Farewell to Diving After Five Olympic Games

Tom Daley, the 30-year-old British diving sensation, has officially hung up his Speedo after a remarkable career spanning five Olympic Games. Known not just for his incredible talent but also for breaking barriers as an openly gay athlete, Daley leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations.

    A Dive into Greatness

Daley made a splash on the international stage at just 14 years old when he debuted at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. But it was the 2012 London Games that catapulted him into stardom. Competing on home turf, Daley clinched a bronze medal in the solo 10m platform event, solidifying his status as a national hero. Just a year later, at 19, he came out as gay, becoming one of the few openly LGBTQ+ athletes in the world.

    From Bronze to Gold

Daley’s Olympic journey didn’t stop there. He snagged another bronze in the synchronized 10m platform at the 2016 Rio Olympics. But it was the 2021 Tokyo Games where Daley truly shone, winning his first and only gold medal in the synchronized 10m platform event alongside Matty Lee. The victory was sweet, marking the pinnacle of his career and the realization of a lifelong dream.

And let’s not forget how adorable his husband’s reaction was to the win!

    A Poignant Farewell

At this year’s Olympics, Daley had the honor of being Team Great Britain’s flag bearer during the opening ceremony—an emotional moment that he described as “the highest honor.” He didn’t disappoint, earning a silver medal in the synchronized 10m platform event with new diving partner Noah Williams. With that, Daley secured a full set of Olympic medals—gold, silver, and bronze—cementing his status as Great Britain’s most decorated diver.

“It feels very, very surreal,” Daley told British Vogue about his decision to retire. “There was a lot of pressure and expectation. I was eager for it to be done… but when I saw my husband and kids in the audience, I knew this was why I did this. It’s the right time to call it a day.”

    Beyond the Pool

As Daley steps away from the diving board, he’s diving into new ventures. He plans to spend more time with his husband, filmmaker Dustin Lance Black, and their two kids. He’s also expanding his creative pursuits, which include knitting, crocheting, and now, sewing. Daley even enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles to learn how to sew, with plans to launch a swimwear line next year.

Tom Daley’s journey from a young diving prodigy to an Olympic champion and LGBTQ+ trailblazer has been nothing short of extraordinary. We can’t wait to see what he conquers next!

Jonathan Bailey Steals the Spotlight as Fiyero in New ‘Wicked’ Clip—and We’re Swooning!

Get ready to be spellbound, because Jonathan Bailey is set to dazzle as Fiyero in the highly anticipated Wicked film!

Directed by Jon M. Chu, this November’s highly anticipated release just dropped a clip that has us all swooning over our new favorite Winkie Prince.

Bailey, known for making hearts race in Bridgerton and Fellow Travelers, takes on one of the leading male roles in Wicked: Part One, starring opposite Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Galinda. And if this clip is anything to go by, he’s about to become the most eligible bachelor at Shiz University—and in all of Oz!

    First-Look at Fiyero

The clip kicks off with Galinda, played by Grande, shrieking in delight when she learns that none other than Prince Fiyero will be attending Shiz University. But the real excitement begins when we finally glimpse Bailey as Fiyero.

Bowen Yang, who plays Pfannee, immediately starts flirting with him, asking, “enroll here often?” Me too, Bowen. With his trademark charm, Fiyero responds by introducing himself to the school: “I see that the responsibility to corrupt my fellow students falls to me,” he quips.

But don’t think everyone is falling for his charms. An unimpressed Elphaba tells him, “You pretend to be shallow and self-absorbed.” To this Fiyero cheekily replies, “Uh, excuse me, there is no pretense here. I happen to be genuinely self-absorbed and deeply shallow.”

Fans can’t help but highlight the similarities between Bailey’s Fiyero and Bridgerton’s favorite Viscount. “Ooooo LOVE HE BROUGHT HIS ANTHONY BRIDGERTON CHARM TO THIS! Can’t wait to hear his singing here!” one user wrote. We are so back, baby!

Since the first trailer dropped, we’ve been desperate to get a better look at Fiyero. Finally, Wicked is answering our prayers.

    A Star in the Making

Bailey’s portrayal of Fiyero already promises to be a scene-stealer, adding a new layer of charisma to the beloved character. Fans of the Wicked musical and book know that Fiyero’s role in the story is pivotal, so this first look is just a tantalizing taste of what’s to come.

Prepare to fall under Bailey’s spell when Wicked: Part One hits theaters on November 22. Whether you’re a longtime musical fan or just here for the eye candy, this is one film you won’t want to miss!

With its unique blend of humor, heart, and superhero antics, this series has left a lasting mark on its audience and stars.

    A Family Affair—On and Off-Screen

The cast of The Umbrella Academy recently sat down with Gayety to discuss what the show has meant to them.

Tom Hopper, who plays Luther Hargreeves, summed up the experience perfectly: “It’s been four seasons, but it’s actually been like seven, nearly eight years of our lives, so it’s been a big old chunk. It’s been really special. I think you get one of these kinds of shows once in a blue moon where you just go, wow, that was really special.”

Elliot Page, who portrays Viktor Hargreeves, shared similar sentiments: “I just feel so lucky. I feel so grateful. We got to have these four seasons. I got to work with such incredible people and to play this character that every season had such a fantastic arc to dive into, and then to have personal things in my life happen, and to have that be welcomed into the show and not pushed away.”

    NETFLIX

    Viktor Hargreeves: A Groundbreaking Storyline

Page’s journey, both on and off the screen, has been nothing short of inspiring. After coming out as transgender after the show’s second season, Page received overwhelming support from showrunner Steve Blackman and the rest of the cast. Viktor Hargreeves’ transition in the series wasn’t just a narrative choice but a meaningful integration of Page’s personal journey into the storyline, making The Umbrella Academy a beacon of representation.

Reflecting on the show’s impact, Aidan Gallagher, who plays Number Five, mentioned how working on the series has had a “massive impact” on everyone involved, describing it as a “blessing” that will stay with them long after the cameras stop rolling.

    The Lyrics’ Hidden Message

Poker Face has always been a fan favorite with its catchy gambling-themed lyrics. But now, those lines like, “Can’t read my, can’t read my/ No, he can’t read my poker face/ (She’s got me like nobody),” take on a whole new meaning. Gaga encouraged the audience to sing along, cheekily adding, “Come on, sing along, I know you’ve done it” – referring to thinking about women while with men.

    Gaga’s Bisexual Anthem

This isn’t the first time Lady Gaga has spoken about the bisexual undertones in Poker Face. In 2009, she told Jonathan Ross she’d “think about women” while “having sex with her boyfriend.” She officially dubbed the song an “ode to bisexuality” in 2021.

Gaga proudly came out as bisexual in 2013. At a release party for her album Artpop, she declared, “You know what? It’s not a lie that I am bisexual and I like women, and anyone that wants to twist this into ‘she says she’s bisexual for marketing,’ this is a f**king lie. This is who I am and who I have always been.”

    Gaga’s Recent Highlights

Lady Gaga has been busy not only teasing queer meanings in her songs but also performing at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony. Plus, she’s set to star opposite Joaquin Phoenix in the highly anticipated Joker sequel, Folie à Deux.
