    Showrunner Russell T Davies spills the tea on what fans can expect from Gatwa’s groundbreaking portrayal, promising a character who’s anything but “neutered.”

    Breaking Barriers with a Queer Doctor

    Davies, renowned for his storytelling prowess, shared with Variety that Gatwa’s Doctor won’t shy away from embracing his queer identity. This isn’t about putting a label on the Doctor’s sexuality but rather letting his innate “lightness and joy” shine, something Davies feels resonates with queer energy. 

    He cheekily noted that past incarnations of the Time Lord “weren’t exactly the straightest men,” suggesting a rich subtext has always been woven into the fabric of the character.

    As the first out queer actor to take on the role, Gatwa’s casting alone is a bold statement. The inclusion of queer themes won’t dominate the plot but expect subtle nods and explorations throughout the series. Davies made it clear: “We’re not delivering a neutered Doctor.”

    Davies has always pushed the envelope, and casting Gatwa was no exception. The search for the new Doctor was broad, including men, women, Black, white, non-binary actors, and those who keep their sexuality private. Davies thrives on challenging norms: “It’s very hard for anyone to stop me doing these things… you’d have to be a pretty brave executive to say: ‘Don’t go there’ to me.”

    This casting choice follows in the footsteps of Jodie Whittaker, the first female Doctor, who faced challenges from fans clinging to traditional portrayals.     “I didn’t [know I was coming out], but I kinda thought, wasn’t it obvious?” she told the reporter. “I didn’t realize people didn’t know.”

    “I went into Billie Eilish interview mode, [like], ‘Oh, I don’t care. Yeah, I’ll say whatever. Wasn’t it obvious?’ And then afterwards I was like, ‘Wait. It wasn’t obvious to me.’”

    She acknowledged the mixed feelings it provoked. “I’m lucky enough to be in a time when I’m able to say something like that and things go OK for me,” she said, acknowledging that not everyone’s experience with such revelations is as forgiving.

    The singer emphasized the importance of self-identity and the pressure to conform to labels. “Nobody should be pressured into being one thing or the other, and I think that there’s a lot of wanting labels all over the place,” Eilish argued.     The Heartstopper Family Keeps on Growing

    Though fans had pieced together clues about Bailey’s involvement, Netflix finally confirmed it, ending the speculation. However, the dreamy actor is not the only one joining the Heartstopper fam.

    ‘I am incredibly excited to be welcoming three new cast members to the Heartstopper family,” shared author Alice Oseman.

    In addition to Bailey, Eddie Marsan (Back to Black, Ray Donovan) and Hayley Atwell (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Captain America: The First Avenger) will be guest starring.

    “Hayley Atwell joins the Nelson family as Nick’s Aunt Diane, who takes Nick on a summer holiday to Menorca and has some tough advice to impart about his relationship. Eddie Marsan will be portraying a beloved character from the graphic novels: Geoff, Charlie’s wise and straight-talking therapist.”

    Atwell’s entrance is bittersweet, as fans mourn Olivia Colman’s exit as Nick’s mom. Fortunately, Nick won’t be alone this season! His aunt will be there to help navigate him through tough times in his relationship with Charlie.

    “It was an absolute joy to see Hayley, Eddie, and Jonathan’s talent alongside our existing cast, and I can’t wait for the Heartstopper fans to meet these new characters,” Oseman concluded.

    Showalter is enthusiastic about the unique storyline, saying, “I’m just really interested in these characters as people.” He elaborates on the relationship between Solène, played by Hathaway, and Hayes, portrayed by Galitzine, emphasizing these characters’ depth and challenges. 

    “I hope that women and men too, see Solèn as a powerful woman who’s making her own decisions,” Showalter added. “And she’s a mom, but she’s also a sexual being and she’s got hopes and dreams and all of those things, and she’s just making her own decisions for herself. And I think she’s a really powerful character and a great role model.”

    Showalter raved about recreating the popular desert festival but revealed they actually filmed it during the winter. 

    “You can even see there’s steam or whatever coming out of their mouths. We shot the movie in late November/December, so we’re actually in Atlanta when we were shooting that.”

    A Spark On and Off Screen

    The chemistry between Hathaway and Galitzine is palpable, both on-screen and off. 

    “It’s funny. We knew that they were absolutely perfect for each other,” Showalter said of the casting. “Just every day just coming into set, working together, having fun, seeing them create their characters and sort of become these two people and go on this journey for me. It was awesome.”

    On-screen, their chemistry is undeniable, and off-screen, they bonded charmingly through texts.

    Back Together Again!

    Fans of the hit Netflix series Élite were thrilled as Manu Ríos and André Lamoglia, who captured hearts as the beloved Patrick Blanco and Iván Carvalho, reunited in sunny Cancun, Mexico. 

    This get-together was all the more special since Ríos departed the show at the end of its sixth season, marking the end of their characters’ romantic saga on-screen.

    Still Friends Off-Screen

    While their on-screen romance has concluded, Ríos and Lamoglia continue to share a strong friendship. The duo attended the afterparty for the Premios Platino 2024, where Ríos had the honor of presenting the Best First Fiction Film award. Photographs from the event show the actors with beaming smiles, donned in silky shirts and shimmering gold chains, epitomizing style and camaraderie.

    A Fond Farewell

    Despite Ríos’s departure, poignantly marked by a voiceover in Élite season 7, where his character Patrick bids farewell to Iván, the actors’ real-life reunion offers some solace to fans. Lamoglia will continue his role through the upcoming final eighth season of Élite, while Ríos will appear in a new Netflix medical drama, Respira.
