  • Harvey Guillén Cheers for Queer Representation in Disney’s Future

Harvey Guillén Cheers for Queer Representation in Disney’s Future

Even though mainstream animated films have been a bit slow on the uptake, Harvey Guillén, the beloved What We Do in the Shadows actor, sees a rainbow at the end of the tunnel for LGBTQ+ representation in Disney animations.

    Guillén’s Optimistic Outlook

While chatting with ComicBook.com, Guillén, who also voiced a character in Wish, expressed his confidence in Disney’s journey toward inclusivity. “They’re making strides in the right direction,” he remarked. Reimagining the wheel of animation isn’t easy, but according to Guillén, Disney is stepping up. The idea of a queer Disney princess isn’t just a dream; Guillén believes it’s a possibility in the very near future.

“I think that we are in the lifespan of that potentially happening,” he said. “It takes time with stuff like that. Representation has taken so long just in film in general with every studio and every company. And so it’s taken us this far to come this far but look how far we’ve gotten.”

    Disney’s Magical World Embraces Diversity

For years, Disney has captivated us with stories of heroism, adventure, and magic. Yet, the representation of LGBTQ+ characters in these tales is a relatively new chapter in Disney’s narrative. Recent films like Frozen, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Luca have hinted at a more inclusive future, showcasing characters that resonate with queer audiences.

A Look Back: Queer Coding in Disney

Before openly celebrating LGBTQ+ characters, Disney subtly included them through queer coding. Characters like Hades from Hercules and Jafar from Aladdin carried traits commonly associated with LGBTQ+ stereotypes. This method provided a glimpse of representation, albeit in a nuanced and sometimes problematic way, during less accepting times.

    Breaking New Ground in Representation

The landscape is shifting with characters like Officer Specter in Onward and Artie in Cruella, who represent a more explicit acknowledgment of LGBTQ+ identities. Disney’s TV shows, such as The Owl House and Andi Mack, have also made significant strides by portraying queer characters authentically, moving beyond mere insinuations to genuine representation.

Overcoming Hurdles: Disney’s Journey Amidst Controversy

Despite its progress, Disney’s path to inclusivity hasn’t been without its challenges. Balancing global audience expectations has led to controversies, including censorship in various regions. Moreover, the criticism over portraying LGBTQ+ characters as secondary or stereotypical underscores the ongoing struggle for meaningful representation.

The presence of LGBTQ+ characters in Disney animations is more than a nod to diversity; it’s a powerful tool for building empathy and understanding. For LGBTQ+ youth, seeing themselves reflected in these stories can be incredibly affirming, offering role models and a sense of belonging. Harvey Guillén’s enthusiasm shines a light on the potential for more inclusive and representative Disney narratives. With voices like his advocating for change, the hope for a queer Disney hero doesn’t seem so far-fetched after all.

Whale Behavior: More Than Meets the Eye

Traditionally, spotting whale romance in the wild is tough, especially among males. Their hidden genitalia help them swim smoothly, but it also makes their mating habits mysterious. This recent Hawaiian encounter, where one male gently held the other, opens a whole new chapter in understanding whale love and friendship.

“This discovery challenges our preconceived notions about humpback whale behavior,” said Ph.D. student Stephanie Stack from the Pacific Whale Foundation. “While we have long recognized the complex social structures of these incredible creatures, witnessing the copulation of two male whales for the first time is a unique and remarkable event.”

Whales in the Wild: A Broader Perspective

It’s more than just humpback whales getting attention. Other sea mammals like dolphins and killer whales show us that same-sex behaviors might be more about making friends and building bonds than we thought. Each discovery tells us more about the complex and fascinating world beneath the waves.

It also offers a peek into how humpback whales might use these interactions for social reasons, like strengthening alliances or showing who’s boss. It’s a reminder that there’s still so much to learn about the deep blue sea and its inhabitants.

Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor are Starring in a New Queer Drama and People Don’t Know How to Feel

Hollywood’s at it again, creating another film with everyone talking! This time, it’s all about the new movie The History of Sound, a gay period romance kicking up quite the conversation even before it hits the screens.

The Talk of Tinseltown: ‘The History of Sound’

The History of Sound isn’t just any movie—it’s a love story set during the tumultuous times of World War I. It stars Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor, two actors who’ve stepped into the shoes of Lionel and David. These two characters embark on a heartfelt journey to capture the essence of their countrymen through sounds and songs of the era. The film aims to showcase their transformative adventure across the USA, promising viewers a mix of emotion, history, and romance.

The Casting Controversy: Who Should Play Who?

But here’s where things get tricky! As soon as filming kicked off, the internet was abuzz with debates. The main question? Should straight actors play gay roles? A question that has been tossed around for decades with no clear answer in sight. Mescal and O’Connor are in the spotlight, with folks wondering why the movie didn’t cast out gay actors for these heartfelt parts.

They’ve played gay characters before, but that hasn’t stopped the chatter. Mescal previously starred alongside Andrew Scott in the heartwrenching film All of Us Strangers and even snagged an award for Best Supporting Performance at the British Independent Film Awards. Meanwhile, in 2017, O’Connor portrayed a gay character in God’s Own Country, and he will star as a tennis star entangled in a complex love triangle with his former best friend and his wife, who also serves as his coach, in Luca Guadagnino’s eagerly awaited movie Challengers.

    A Community Speaks Out

It’s not just about who’s playing who; it’s about representation. Many in the queer community want to see more gay actors in gay roles, especially after films like Bottoms set such a strong precedent. These movies didn’t just entertain; they gave a platform for gay actors to shine in roles that resonate with their own identities.

Yet, there’s another side to the coin. Some argue that acting is all about transformation. Should personal lives dictate casting? It’s a hot topic, and opinions are as varied as the colors of the rainbow.

    The Bigger Picture

The History of Sound is more than just its casting. It’s a story of love, discovery, and the power of voice. As the film makes its way through production, one thing’s for sure: the conversations it’s sparking are just as compelling as the plot itself.

So, what’s your take? Should the curtain rise on more authentic representation, or is acting all about stepping into someone else’s shoes, no matter who you are? The debate rages on, but one thing’s clear: The History of Sound is already making history, and it’s not even out yet!

At 47, Andrew Scott shines as a troubled writer in All of Us Strangers, where his journey back home unveils a surreal twist—his deceased parents are still there. His character’s emotional rollercoaster includes coming out to his phantom parents and forming a deep bond with a lonely neighbor, portrayed by Paul Mescal.

Despite the film’s acclaim and the audience’s expectations, Scott faced a surprising omission from major award nominations, sparking a debate about the recognition of LGBTQ+ roles in cinema.

While All of Us Strangers picked up several BAFTA nods and even saw Paul Mescal and Claire Foy getting nominated, Andrew Scott’s absence from the list puzzled fans and critics alike. Even a Golden Globe nomination didn’t translate into a win for Scott, overshadowed by a performance in Oppenheimer.

    Russell T Davies Weighs In

Renowned writer Russell T Davies, known for his contributions to LGBTQ+ storytelling, shared his insights into why Scott might have been overlooked. At a panel with Attitude Magazine, Davies suggested that Scott’s portrayal might have been too authentic, leading some to undervalue his acting prowess.

    Instagram/@russelltdavies63

“What I think happened there was, when a gay man plays a gay man, he’s not considered to be acting.

“I genuinely think that happened there, that people thought, ‘Oh, he’s very good, but he’s not acting there. He’s not reaching; he was just being himself.”

Davies emphasized the need for more queer representation in queer roles, advocating for a shift in the industry to recognize the talent and contribution of LGBTQ+ actors fully.

    A Controversial Interview

Adding to the week’s tensions, Scott experienced an uncomfortable moment during a BBC interview, which many labeled as insensitive. The incident brought additional attention to the challenges queer actors face, even as they gain prominence in the industry.

Despite the setbacks, the conversation around All of Us Strangers and Andrew Scott’s performance has ignited a crucial dialogue on respect, recognition, and the path forward for queer storytelling in cinema.
