    A Love That Transcended Time

Big Freedia and Devon Hurst shared a relationship that spanned two decades, marked by love and mutual respect. In a June 2023 interview with AnOther Mag, Freedia spoke about the deep connection she shared with Hurst. “I experienced love at first sight with my partner, and we’ve been together going on 18 years,” she said at the time. “It’s our love that’s kept us together.”

Their bond was an example of enduring love, and Freedia has often spoken about the importance of their relationship in her life, both personally and professionally. The couple’s enduring partnership served as a grounding force for Freedia, whose career in the spotlight often comes with challenges. Hurst’s passing marks the end of an era in Freedia’s personal life, leaving a profound void in her heart.

A Time for Family and Reflection

Despite the devastating news, Freedia managed to share a celebratory post for her sister Crystal’s birthday just hours after announcing Hurst’s passing. In the post, Freedia acknowledged the pain she was feeling, stating, “Happy Birthday to my Baby Sister,” and adding, “She knows how much her words can even explain she knows the pain her brother is in rn.”

In a raw and emotional follow-up, Freedia opened up about the depth of her grief. “I’ll make it up to promise you,” she wrote to Crystal. “I love you we gone have many more to celebrate.” Freedia’s words showed the strength of her love for her family and her desire to carry on, despite the sadness she was feeling.

Freedia’s fans are familiar with her openness and vulnerability, and this moment of reflection reveals just how much she relies on her family and community to help her navigate the heartache of such a significant loss.

A Legacy of Music and Resilience

Big Freedia’s career, which includes iconic tracks like “Explode” and “Y’all Get Back Now,” has always been a celebration of resilience, joy, and expression. Her influence within the New Orleans music scene and beyond has been undeniable, as she helped bring the genre of Bounce music to international recognition. But Freedia’s strength is not only evident in her performances; it’s also in her ability to show up as her authentic self, even in moments of great personal sorrow.

Earlier this year, Freedia released her latest single “Sunday Best” with Tamar Braxton, a gospel-inspired track that showcases her versatility and passion for music. It is clear that Freedia will continue to honor the legacy of love and connection that she shared with Hurst through her art and advocacy.

As Freedia mourns the loss of her partner, she has shown grace and resilience in her journey, demonstrating that even in times of profound loss, the power of love and community endures.

  • Washington, D.C. ‘Senate Twink’ Aidan Maese-Czeropski Speaks Out After Viral Sex Tape Scandal

Washington, D.C. ‘Senate Twink’ Aidan Maese-Czeropski Speaks Out After Viral Sex Tape Scandal

A former U.S. Senate staffer, known widely online as the “Senate Twink,” is speaking out for the first time since a sex scandal involving a viral video forced him out of politics and into a mental health crisis.

Aidan Maese-Czeropski, 24 at the time of the incident, was working for U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, a Maryland Democrat, when a right-wing media outlet published a video in December 2023 allegedly showing Maese-Czeropski engaging in sexual activity with another man in a Senate hearing room. The video, released by the Daily Caller — a site founded by conservative commentator Tucker Carlson — quickly spread online, sparking outrage and leading to his termination.

    View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Gay Sydney News (@gaysydneynews)

Now living in Sydney, Australia, Maese-Czeropski opened up about the aftermath of the scandal in a recent interview with Gay Sydney News. He revealed that the exposure of the video and the wave of public backlash triggered a mental health breakdown that required hospitalization. “Mentally, I spent a little bit in the psych ward after the fact because it was just… it’s overwhelming to realise and to know that tens of millions of people literally despise you,” Maese-Czeropski said. “I was a catatonic mess.”

The video, reportedly shared within a private group of gay political staffers, was filmed inside an official Senate chamber. The footage showed two men on a dais — where lawmakers typically conduct government business — in a compromising position. The fallout was immediate and severe.

Sen. Cardin swiftly fired Maese-Czeropski, citing the incident as a “breach of trust.” At the time, Cardin expressed concern for his staff and called the situation “tragic,” telling reporters, “It’s presented a lot of anger and frustration.”

Maese-Czeropski, who had been employed in Cardin’s office for roughly 14 months, said he could no longer find work in Washington, D.C., after becoming “so infamous so quickly.” He shared that the intense public scrutiny and media firestorm forced him to flee the United States. He first traveled to South Africa, where he met a New Zealand backpacker who encouraged him to start over in Sydney. “She told me, ‘Aidan, you should move to Sydney. You would love it there, you would fit right in, you could get a fresh start,’” he recalled. “I took a risk… I love it here and I’m glad that I took that jump.”

Following his relocation, Maese-Czeropski launched an OnlyFans account to support himself financially. Despite his new beginning in Australia, the former staffer said he continues to grapple with the long-term emotional impact of the incident. According to his therapist, he has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). “I don’t have any shame in that,” he said of the diagnosis, adding that therapy has helped him process the trauma.

Maese-Czeropski also reflected on how his portrayal in the scandal was affected by homophobia, noting that he received disproportionate backlash because of his role in the video. “I got all these death threats, hatred. And the guy who was the top didn’t,” he said, referring to the sexual dynamic shown in the leaked footage. “The hatred came because I was bottoming — that’s just the ugly truth.”

Shortly after the video was made public, Maese-Czeropski published a now-deleted statement on LinkedIn. In it, he claimed he was being targeted not because of his actions but because of his sexuality. “This has been a difficult time for me, as I have been attacked for who I love, to pursue a political agenda,” he wrote at the time. “While some of my actions in the past have shown poor judgment, I love my job and would never disrespect my workplace. Any attempts to characterize my actions otherwise are fabricated, and I will be exploring what legal options are available to me in these matters.”

Though the statement has since been removed, Maese-Czeropski has not ruled out taking legal action against those he believes unfairly exploited his identity and vilified him for political purposes.

In his interview, he described the experience as both humiliating and deeply traumatic. Despite that, he said he is trying to reclaim agency over his life and narrative. “Everyone in D.C. knew me, and it was kind of gross and horrifying because I’m not someone who likes to be in the public spotlight at all,” he said. “Now, I’m trying to live for myself, not the opinions of strangers on the internet.”

The case sparked wider debates on privacy, consent, queer visibility in politics, and the weaponization of personal behavior for political gain. Advocates for LGBTQ+ rights criticized the right-wing media’s handling of the story, accusing outlets like the Daily Caller of perpetuating stigma against gay individuals and selectively targeting them for scandal.

Although Maese-Czeropski has not returned to politics, his story continues to circulate across social media, often cited in discussions about ethics in digital journalism, political smear campaigns, and mental health support for public figures.

While he says he regrets the fallout, Maese-Czeropski maintains that his actions were private and not meant for public consumption — and that their exposure was driven by agendas larger than himself. “I’m not proud of what happened,” he admitted, “but I also don’t believe I deserved to be vilified like that. People make mistakes — and mine was turned into a national circus because I’m queer.”

Maese-Czeropski is currently focusing on rebuilding his life in Sydney, away from the U.S. political spotlight. He said he hopes his story will eventually become more than just a scandal — but a cautionary tale about media exploitation, mental health, and queer resilience.

  • MISTR Celebrates One Year of Free DoxyPEP With STI Positivity Rates Cut in Half

MISTR Celebrates One Year of Free DoxyPEP With STI Positivity Rates Cut in Half

Just in time for STI Awareness Week (April 13–19), MISTR—the largest LGBTQ+ sexual health platform in the United States—is marking a game-changing milestone: one year of providing free DoxyPEP to patients nationwide.

And the results? A dramatic 50% drop in STI positivity rates among its users.

Since launching access to free DoxyPEP (doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis) in 2024, MISTR has seen massive adoption. Over 74% of its patients now request DoxyPEP bundled with their PrEP prescriptions, signaling growing awareness and demand for this powerful STI prevention tool.

“The science is clear—DoxyPEP works. PrEP works. The problem isn’t awareness, it’s access,” said MISTR founder and CEO Tristan Schukraft. “We’ve built a platform that patients actually want to use. We’ve removed the stigma, the waiting rooms, the paperwork—and we’re seeing real results.”

    Breaking Barriers to Care

MISTR currently serves more than 500,000 patients across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, offering free online access to PrEP, DoxyPEP, long-term HIV care, and at-home STI testing in both English and Spanish.

Through a telehealth model, MISTR has significantly expanded access in underserved communities, particularly in the South and among Black and Latino populations—groups that continue to face disproportionate rates of HIV and other STIs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

    • Over 68 million people in the U.S. have an STI at any given time.
    • Only 2.4 million cases were officially reported in 2023.
    • Just 1 in 4 people at risk for HIV are currently prescribed PrEP.
    • Among Black Americans—the most impacted by new HIV diagnoses—only 13% of eligible individuals are on PrEP.

By comparison, Black patients represent 18% of MISTR’s user base.

“When care is accessible, affirming, and stigma-free, it reaches the communities that need it most,” Schukraft said.

    A New Era of Prevention

Carl Schmid, executive director of the HIV + Hepatitis Policy Institute, called MISTR’s progress “a blueprint for what’s possible.”

“MISTR’s results show what happens when we remove barriers and bring prevention to where people actually are,” he said. “This is the kind of innovation we need—community-driven, tech-enabled, and stigma-free.”

Beyond digital care, MISTR collaborates with more than 65 nonprofit organizations to help fund treatment for the uninsured and provide culturally competent, sex-positive services at scale. Its reach closely aligns with CDC Priority Jurisdictions and the federal Ending the HIV Epidemic goals.

    Looking Ahead

With the next generation of prevention—like long-acting injectable PrEP—on the horizon, MISTR is already gearing up to integrate those options into its platform.

“We’re scaling to reach every person who wants protection but can’t—or won’t—navigate a broken healthcare system,” Schukraft said. “We’re showing what’s possible when prevention is stigma-free, community-rooted, and actually convenient.”

As STI Awareness Week shines a spotlight on rising infection rates and prevention gaps, MISTR’s success story offers a timely reminder: when care is easy to access, people show up—and stay healthy.

Ts Madison Launches Groundbreaking Housing Initiative for Black Trans Women in Atlanta

Transgender advocate and icon Ts Madison has unveiled a new initiative aimed at providing safe housing and support for Black trans women in Atlanta. Launched in partnership with NAESM, a historic Black HIV/AIDS organization, the Starter House will serve as a vital resource for Black trans women engaged in sex work. This initiative, which coincided with the 16th annual Transgender Day of Visibility, is set to offer a range of services, including gender-affirming healthcare, economic opportunities, and holistic support for those in need.

A Safe Haven for Black Trans Women

Located in Ts Madison’s former residence, the facility offers a welcoming and secure environment for those who may be experiencing homelessness or struggling to transition out of sex work. Madison, who is known for her work as a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race and her advocacy for the trans community, expressed the emotional significance of the project during the grand opening. “This morning I was having withdrawals because this is a big thing,” Madison said. “Like, this is my house. I’m giving my house to the community. That means people are going to be transitioning in and out of this house.”

Madison went on to explain that the facility would provide essential support for Black trans women, many of whom are disenfranchised and homeless. “These are girls that are trying to find another way in their life,” she said. The Starter House is set to be a key resource for these women as they begin their journey toward stability, security, and self-empowerment.

    Part of a Larger Movement

The Starter House is not just a local effort; it is also part of a larger movement aimed at supporting disenfranchised individuals. The facility is affiliated with A New Way of Life’s SAFE Housing Network, a global coalition of over 30 organizations focused on providing reentry support to women who have been incarcerated. Founded in 1998, the SAFE Housing Network works to reduce U.S. incarceration rates by offering housing, healing, and leadership opportunities for individuals affected by the justice system.

Dominique Morgan, the Executive Director of the Ts Madison Starter House, emphasized the power of community support in these difficult times. “I think so many of us feel the fear of what’s happening in this climate, and so many folks feel like, ‘Are we going to make it?’” Morgan said. “But today really symbolizes for me that we have answers happening all over the place, and we have the power to decide how we show up for each other.”

A Symbol of Hope and Empowerment

The Starter House is more than just a place to live — it’s a symbol of hope and empowerment for Black trans women. It represents a crucial opportunity for healing, growth, and independence. The initiative will provide women with access to safe, affirming housing and the resources they need to thrive. Madison’s emotional connection to the project speaks to the significance it holds for both her and the broader trans community.

As the Starter House begins its journey, it stands as a vital stepping stone for many women seeking a better life. To learn more about the initiative or to make a donation, visit the official Ts Madison Starter House page.

  • Everything You Need Know About Poppers: The Good, Bad, and Everything in Between

Everything You Need Know About Poppers: The Good, Bad, and Everything in Between

Poppers have been a staple in the gay community for decades, often used to enhance sexual experiences and provide a quick rush of euphoria. But what exactly are poppers? Here’s what you need to know about this widely used, yet misunderstood, substance.

    What Are Poppers?

Poppers is the slang term for alkyl nitrites, a class of chemicals used primarily for recreational purposes. Though often associated with the LGBTQ+ community, especially within sexual contexts, poppers have gained wider recognition in some straight clubs as well. It’s important to understand exactly what you’re inhaling when using poppers.

    Photo: Alamy
    Photo: Alamy

    How Do Poppers Work?

Poppers work by relaxing smooth muscles in the body, including the sphincter muscles in the anus, which is why many people use them during sex. When you inhale poppers, they cause blood vessels to dilate, leading to an increase in heart rate and blood flow, which in turn creates the euphoric feeling associated with their use.

A Cultural Staple Since the 1970s

The use of poppers has deep ties to the gay disco scene of the 1970s. Many gay men would sniff poppers while dancing at clubs to enhance the music and create a heightened sense of pleasure. By the 1990s, poppers became a popular accessory at gay raves. Over time, their use expanded beyond LGBTQ+ spaces, and now some straight individuals use them recreationally in non-sexual settings, especially in club environments.

    Photo: Disco Delivery
    Photo: Disco Delivery

The Danger of Mixing Poppers and Viagra

It’s crucial to be cautious when using poppers in combination with other substances. Poppers and Viagra both cause a drop in blood pressure, which can be dangerous when used together. This dangerous combination can result in fainting, stroke, or even heart attack or death, according to the LGBT Foundation. Always be aware of the risks when using poppers.

Ingestion of Poppers Can Be Deadly

While inhaling poppers is relatively safe in moderation, ingesting them can have lethal consequences. The U.S. National Library of Medicine warns that ingestion, whether intentional or accidental, can result in death. Poppers are meant to be inhaled through the nose, not consumed.

    Who Uses Poppers?

Though poppers have been popular in certain communities, they’re not as widely used as other recreational drugs. Only about 3 percent of the population reports using poppers. This is a much smaller percentage compared to the 10 percent of U.S. adults who have smoked marijuana within the past year. Poppers’ popularity is predominantly confined to gay men, reflecting the demographic most likely to use them.

Legal Controversies: The UK’s Attempt to Ban Poppers

In early 2023, the UK nearly banned poppers, citing concerns over safety. However, the move failed due to a technicality, as reported by The Guardian. While poppers remain legal in many countries, their regulation is often contentious.

    Canada’s Ban on Poppers

In 2013, Canada moved to ban the sale of poppers, warning that selling them could lead to a three-year jail sentence or a $5,000 fine. This was part of a broader effort to regulate substances associated with recreational drug use.

    Health Risks of Poppers

Like any substance, poppers come with potential health risks. Short-term effects can include lightheadedness, headaches, dizziness, and fainting. Long-term use can lead to eye damage, including a condition known as “Poppers Maculopathy,” which can cause vision loss. High doses of poppers can also lead to methaemoglobinaemia, a condition in which blood cells lose the ability to carry oxygen, similar to carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the LGBT Foundation.

The Prescription History of Amyl Nitrite

Amyl nitrite, a type of alkyl nitrite, was originally sold as a prescription drug in the U.S. in 1937 for the treatment of chest pain. However, it was taken off the prescription list in 1960 due to its relatively low risk of harm. By 1969, it was reinstated as a prescription drug. Despite this, you can still find other alkyl nitrites, which are marketed under different names such as “nail polish remover,” in sex shops. These versions are typically available legally for recreational use.

  • Trevor Project Launches Campaign to Support LGBTQ+ Youth in Rural Areas

Trevor Project Launches Campaign to Support LGBTQ+ Youth in Rural Areas

The Trevor Project has unveiled a new public awareness campaign aimed at addressing the critical issue of suicide among LGBTQ+ youth living in rural communities. The campaign, which launched Tuesday, features a poignant documentary short film highlighting the experiences of a mother and daughter in Iowa.

The 10-minute film, part of The Trevor Project’s “Learn with Love” series, tells the story of Angie, a Methodist pastor, and her 19-year-old daughter, Jubilee, who identifies as bisexual. The documentary explores themes of identity, faith, and parental acceptance, offering a glimpse into the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and their families in rural settings.

The campaign is supported by a $5 million grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust and is part of a three-year multimedia effort to raise awareness about the mental health crisis affecting LGBTQ+ youth in rural areas. The initiative targets nine states served by Helmsley’s Rural Healthcare program: Hawaii, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming.

“No one should feel isolated simply because of who they are, yet the LGBTQ+ community is too often met with hostility,” said Walter Panzirer, Trustee of the Helmsley Charitable Trust. “We know that LGBTQ+ youth in rural states have higher rates of suicidal thoughts, anxiety and depression. It’s essential that they know they’re not alone. The Trevor Project is helping to spread awareness of the serious challenges LGBTQ+ youth face and let them know resources are available to help them thrive.”

Data from The Trevor Project underscores the urgency of the campaign. LGBTQ+ young people are more than four times as likely to attempt suicide compared to their heterosexual peers. The organization estimates that over 1.8 million LGBTQ+ youth, ages 13-24, seriously consider suicide each year in the United States, with an attempt occurring approximately every 45 seconds.

Recent research has revealed that LGBTQ+ youth in rural areas experience even higher rates of suicidal ideation and attempts, coupled with reduced access to mental health care. The Trevor Project aims to bridge this gap by providing resources and support to those in need.

“Storytelling is such a necessary tool to support The Trevor Project’s mission of ending suicide among LGBTQ+ young people, and it is critical for reducing stigma associated with LGBTQ+ families,” said Jaymes Black, CEO of The Trevor Project. “The ability to hear from real, everyday Americans like Angie and Jubilee allows people in every corner of the country to say, ‘Hey, they’re not so different from my family.’”

The campaign will utilize targeted digital advertising across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, and Connected TV (CTV) services, including Disney+, Peacock, Paramount+, Max, WBD, NBC, and Discovery+. The documentary and accompanying trailers will also be made available for broadcast on digital and traditional platforms.

The Trevor Project emphasized the importance of parental acceptance in supporting LGBTQ+ youth. In the film, Angie highlights the risks of rejecting a child’s identity. “From my perspective, the risks of not accepting your child are at best deeply, deeply wounding them and at worst, burying them,” she says. “At the end of the day, what I kept coming back to was, it’s okay to have some fears to question, to struggle for a little bit. But it’s also okay to love them, and to support them 100 percent. In fact, the second part really is non-negotiable. You have to love them. And, and I’m going to do it as best I possibly can.”

The Trevor Project, a leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ young people, provides 24/7 crisis services and operates research, advocacy, education, and peer support programs. The Helmsley Charitable Trust, which supports initiatives in health and place-based programs, has committed over $4.5 billion to charitable causes since 2008.

The campaign’s focus on rural communities addresses a critical need, as these areas often lack the resources and support available in urban centers. By sharing relatable stories and providing access to mental health resources, The Trevor Project and the Helmsley Charitable Trust hope to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for LGBTQ+ youth across the United States.

  • Dylan Mulvaney Reflects on Her Journey of Girlhood and New Memoir ‘Paper Doll’

Dylan Mulvaney Reflects on Her Journey of Girlhood and New Memoir ‘Paper Doll’

Dylan Mulvaney, the trailblazing trans icon and social media star, takes center stage in the March/April 2025 issue of The Advocate, offering a deeply personal look at her rise to fame, the challenges she’s faced, and her reflections on life’s journey. Known for her viral “Days of Girlhood” video series, Mulvaney continues to inspire and advocate for the transgender community, and now, with the release of her memoir Paper Doll: Notes from a Late Bloomer, she shares her intimate coming-of-age story with the world.

In a revealing interview with The Advocate’s Mey Rude, Mulvaney opens up about how she’s navigated both success and backlash, including the infamous “Beergate” incident that drew widespread criticism. Despite the challenges, Mulvaney remains grounded in optimism and gratitude, elements that have sustained her throughout her journey. She also discusses a transformative experience involving ayahuasca, a psychedelic journey that played a pivotal role in her personal growth.

    Paper Doll Chronicles Her Transformation

In Paper Doll, Mulvaney provides a candid account of her life, from her earliest experiences with girlhood to her public coming out and everything in between. The memoir sheds light on her struggles and triumphs, offering a narrative that resonates with many, particularly trans youth who feel alienated or rejected by society.

“I think my memoir is a reflection of my life as someone who is discovering themselves as I go,” Mulvaney said. “It’s not just about the fun moments or the viral videos—it’s about the real moments, the painful parts, and how I learned to navigate them.”

The book delves into her darkest moments, including the aftermath of the Bud Light backlash, an episode Mulvaney refers to as “Beergate.” In the interview, she discusses how the incident impacted her but also how she managed to emerge from it with an even stronger sense of self.

    Staying Optimistic Amidst Backlash

One of the most striking elements of Mulvaney’s interview is her unwavering commitment to optimism. Despite the challenges she’s faced, she attributes much of her resilience to her optimistic perspective on life.

“I think that I am an optimist to the craziest extent,” she shared. “My earnestness has kept me alive, and it’s what keeps me going… I actually think optimism is the coolest thing in the world. And I think the reason that I am around is because I surround myself with people who are wildly optimistic.”

Her approach to optimism has made her a beacon of hope for many in the LGBTQ+ community, especially those facing their own struggles with identity and acceptance.

    The Power of Vulnerability

A significant theme in Mulvaney’s memoir is the idea of vulnerability as a means of healing. Writing the book was not only cathartic for her but also a way to share her experiences in a deeper and more meaningful way than through her social media posts.

“Writing the memoir ended up being very cathartic and very healing because I think I got to share parts of my relationship to that time and to the media in a way that I didn’t feel safe to online,” Mulvaney explained. “And in a way that felt very vulnerable. I think had I just released a book that was only related to those 365 days, I don’t think it would have been the right thing.”

Her ability to be open about her struggles has helped her connect with fans and followers, many of whom look up to her as a source of inspiration.

Trans Teen Speaks on 18th Birthday Against Iowa Bill Repealing Civil Rights Protections for LGBTQ+ Community

A transgender teen in Iowa made an emotional plea on his 18th birthday at the state Capitol, urging lawmakers not to strip away the rights of transgender individuals. Kayde Martin, a high school senior, addressed lawmakers with tears in his eyes, sharing his deep concerns about the future of transgender rights in Iowa.

“I deeply trouble me that after 18 years of living here with my family, attending school, working, this is the focus of our state,” Martin said, his voice breaking as he spoke against the bill that seeks to repeal civil rights protections for transgender people. His words were a call for empathy, understanding, and fairness.

Martin’s speech was part of a larger effort to stop a law that ultimately passed, making Iowa the first state in the nation to repeal anti-discrimination protections specifically for transgender people. This new law has garnered national attention, as it underscores the ongoing struggle for civil rights within the LGBTQ+ community.

“Good morning, my name is Kayde Martin, and today I speak not just for myself, but for many other transgender youths in Iowa,” Martin began. “I was born on February 27, 2007. Today is my 18th birthday. I stand before you fighting for the same basic civil rights that every Iowan deserves by humanely asking you to vote against this bill.”

Martin, who plans to attend the University of Northern Iowa in the fall, shared his desire to live independently without fear of discrimination. He expressed frustration that some people, particularly those who defend women’s rights, seem to do so selectively, particularly when it comes to transgender individuals.

“I’ve heard some people talk about women’s rights… Why do women’s rights only seem to be defended when it is used to be against the transgender community? Where’s the same outcry when it comes to women’s choices in their own bodily autonomy?” Martin questioned.

Raised in a Christian household, Martin used his faith as a foundation for his call for respect and love for all people, regardless of their gender identity. “A good Christian knows that only the Lord is one to judge,” Martin said, advocating for kindness and understanding over judgment. “Nobody knows the heavenly father’s plan.”

He concluded his emotional speech with a heartfelt plea to the lawmakers: “I want to be able to be the person I was meant to be, and as the person that God knows me to be. Please, don’t take my rights away simply because you disagree with who I am. Being trans is not a choice; it is a reality that you come to when you learn to understand yourself and love yourself.”

Martin called for a civil discourse that would allow for respectful disagreements rather than divisiveness. He expressed hope that Iowans could come together, despite their differences, to avoid further dividing the state.

His plea echoed the sentiments of thousands of people who protested the bill alongside him. Despite widespread opposition, the state’s Republican-dominated legislature fast-tracked the bill, with most Republicans supporting the law along party lines. The bill, which has been widely criticized by Democrats and LGBTQ+ advocates, includes provisions that will allow discrimination against transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals in housing, employment, and credit.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds (R) signed the bill into law, defending it as “common sense” legislation. “It is common sense to acknowledge the obvious biological differences between men and women,” Reynolds said during a signing ceremony. “But unfortunately, these commonsense protections were at risk because… the Civil Rights Code blurred the biological line between the sexes.”

However, many argue that the law is not really about protecting women and children, as Republicans claim. Studies have shown that cisgender men—rather than transgender women—are responsible for most of the harm done to women in sports, citing factors like a lack of funding and support for women’s athletic programs. Critics argue that the bill does little to protect women and children but instead targets the transgender community.

Democratic lawmakers in Iowa, including Rep. Aime Wichtendahl, the state’s only trans legislator, condemned the bill. Wichtendahl said that the purpose of the legislation was to “erase us from public life and to stigmatize our existence, to make our existence illegal, to force us back into the closet.” Wichtendahl added, “The authors of these bills wish us every harm,” emphasizing the broader impact this legislation could have on transgender individuals’ lives.

As Martin and other LGBTQ+ advocates continue to push for equality and protection from discrimination, the fight for transgender rights in Iowa and across the country is far from over. The outcome of this legislation in Iowa may set a dangerous precedent for other states considering similar laws, underscoring the need for continued activism and awareness.

Martin’s brave stand at the Capitol reflects the struggles many transgender youth face as they navigate a world that is often hostile to their identity. His message serves as a reminder that the fight for equal rights for all, regardless of gender identity, is ongoing and requires the collective effort of individuals, communities, and lawmakers alike.

Crunch Fitness West Hollywood Closes Men’s Steam Room for Good After Sexual Misconduct Complaints

Crunch Fitness West Hollywood has permanently closed its men’s steam room following ongoing complaints about inappropriate sexual conduct by members.

The announcement came this morning, when the general manager posted a sign reading: “Steam Room is Permanently Closed,” directing members to the front desk for further inquiries.

The gym, located in the city of Los Angeles, first attracted attention in late January when it posted a sign stating that the steam room was temporarily closed due to “inappropriate conduct” and that its reopening would be reviewed the week of January 27. By January 31, the sign was updated, noting that no reopening date had been set.

The steam room reopened on February 3 after being closed for nearly two weeks. However, the decision to resume service followed pressure from members who threatened to cancel their memberships and demanded discounts, claiming the steam room was a key feature that led them to join the gym.

“We do not tolerate inappropriate behavior in our facility, and we will enforce our policy,” stated a sign posted at the gym warning that anyone caught engaging in sexual activity would face immediate membership termination.

Sean Renzetti, the manager of Crunch West Hollywood, did not provide a formal statement, but he addressed the issue on social media, saying, “If you are participating in sexual activity in our public space, which is illegal, I will terminate your membership immediately. I am gay, so let’s not make it OK because it’s a ‘gay thing.’”

The closure has sparked criticism from members, particularly those who viewed the steam room as an essential part of their gym experience. Jason Thompson, the founder of a health retreat called Authenticity, expressed concerns over a perceived double standard, pointing out that similar inappropriate behavior occurs in the men’s shower area but has not been treated the same way.

Thompson said gym management had responded by explaining that the showers were required for hygiene purposes and were a necessary facility for members. He also noted that the closure impacted the value of his membership, as he had specifically joined the gym for access to the steam room, which he regularly used after yoga, stretching, and cardio.

“I signed up for this gym because of their steam room and have not been able to use it for a week. I’m now not getting what I paid for,” Thompson said.

This isn’t the first time Crunch Fitness West Hollywood has addressed inappropriate behavior in its steam room. In January 2022, the gym posted a similar warning in the men’s locker room, humorously telling members to choose “literally anywhere else” for sexual activity.

As of the time of publication, Crunch Fitness’ corporate office has not responded to requests for comment on the closure or its policies.

The gym’s handling of the steam room issue has raised questions about how such spaces are managed in gyms that cater to diverse communities. Despite these challenges, Crunch Fitness continues to operate in the highly competitive Los Angeles fitness market.
