Ncuti Gatwa Comes Out as Queer
Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa spoke with Elle UK all about his growing career, from playing Eric Effiong to taking on the role as Dr. Who in Dr. Who, as well as his views on labels and sexuality.
Previously, Gatwa has denied commenting about his sexual identity, stating it was “a safety and mental health thing.” However, while telling Elle a moving story where he attended Pride in Manchester, the young actor decided to open up about his personal experience.
“I remember being at Manchester Pride, going through the streets with all my boys, shaking my cha-chas, living it up when I saw this woman who looked exactly like my auntie,” Gatwa recalled. “We were holding hands, and she said to me, ‘I don’t really know why I’m here. I’m just here.’ I told her, ‘Honey, you don’t need to know. You absolutely. Do not. Need. To. Know. You’re here. Be proud of who you are.’”
“I had never met another queer Rwandan person before,” Gatwa continued. “I thought I was the only one in the world.”
Ncuti Shares His Distaste in Labels
Though this conversation with Elle is the first time Gatwa has ever confirmed his sexuality, it is not the first time he has been asked to speak on it. His role as a young gay black man in the sex-forward and diverse series Sex-Education led to many questions about the stars own sexuality.
Netflix “After Sex Education, we all became public property, to an extent,” he told British Vogue. “You have to fight for your right to privacy after that, but you also do feel like you owe people something. In setting my boundaries, I knew I wanted to separate the private and public, and that I never wanted my personal life to overshadow my work,” he explained.
“I also believe that everyone is on their own journey, and it’s important that no one feels an obligation to others in relation to what’s happening to them internally. And that’s what Sex Education is about – taking things at your own pace,” continued Gatwa.
While speaking with Elle, he continued to set boundaries for what he will and won’t share with the public. Though others will surely make assumptions about him for proudly wearing a corset, that does not mean they know anything about him.
“Clothes are to play with,” he said. “I love seeing men in ‘women’s’ clothing. There doesn’t need to be a label. I believe that fully: that’s why I don’t like to label myself – and I don’t owe it to anyone.”
Playing Dr. Who
Since starring in Sex Education, which is gearing up to premiere its last season later this month, Gatwa is moving on. He recently took on the role as a Ken in Greta Gerwigs’ critically acclaimed Barbie movie and will be the first Black, gay Dr. Who in the BBC franchise. Unfortunately, some haters have written off Gatwa’s career as Hollywood looking to “tick boxes.”
“What are you going to do, tell the same stories? Have the same people fronting things for all of eternity? You people with your tiny mindsets — open a book, look out the window, and then f**k off.”
Dr. Who will return on BBC on November 23, 2023. Gatwa will join an incredibly queer cast, including Jonathan Groff, Neal Patrick Harris, Heartstopper‘s Yasmin Finney, and Jinkx Monsoon.

Gay Twitter is Buzzing About Imogen’s Sapphic Awakening in ‘Heartstopper’ S2
Is love finally in the air for our favorite ally, Imogen?
Season two of Heartstopper is here and there is A LOT to unpack from the new season. Warning, spoilers ahead!
Nick is ready to share his relationship with Charlie with his friends and family but finds it harder than expected to come out. Meanwhile, Tao and Elle have decided to give their relationship a shot (finally!) and Isaac is discovering his asexuality. Our other favorite couple Tara and Darcy, who usually seem so solid in their relationship, are struggling as Tara tries to figure out why Darcy is not ready to say “I love you.” Oh, and Ben is still being a jerk and Harry is trying not to be a jerk.

Is that a new Heartstopper ship we see?
The new season also brings way of new characters, like Nima Taleghani as Truham teacher Mr. Farouk, Bel Priestley as Naomi, and Leila Khan as Higgs student Sahar Zahid. Though each character is given their own spin-off plot, we are thrilled about the introduction to Sahar (and the history she shares with a beloved Heartstopper alum).
It is revealed that Sahar and Imogen were childhood best friends, but they drifted apart after Imogen (Rhea Norwood) got a boyfriend. But fate has brought them back together as they share a new friend group. At one point, Imogen jokes that no one can call her the “token ally” because Sahar is there, but the girl quickly corrects her.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m bisexual.”
When Imogen chases after her, Tara picks up a vibe (and so do we!). So many relationships are well under way in the new season, but for characters like Isaac and Imogen, the story has just begun.
Heartstopper fans also obsess over this Imogen/Sahar scene at the prom. Just look at those gaga eyes.
Though Netflix has already confirmed Heartstopper for another season, it is unlikely we will see those episodes on our screen anytime soon. Regardless, there is so much queer drama to look forward to!

Watch the Full Trailer for S2 of ‘Heartstopper’
It’s time to say hi, again!
The first full-length trailer for Netflix’s adorable Heartstopper series is here and we could not be more excited for what season two has in store.
Nick and Charlie are navigating their new relationship while Nick still struggles to come out. In case you forgot, he came out as bisexual to his mom (Olivia Coleman) during the season one finale. But is he ready to tell anyone else?
One thing is for sure; there is A LOT of kissing this season!
Tao and Elle are also exploring their relationship, AKA figuring out if they will ever be more than friends.
“I’ve liked him for so long. Sometimes I think he might like me back,” Elle says in the trailer.
“If this doesn’t work out then I lose my best friend in the whole world,” Tao confesses to Charlie and Isaac. Queue the drama!
Bonus: Tao haircut!
Tara and Darcy are also facing new challenges, but luckily, they have a great friend group to lean on when they need advice.
Isaac also seems to be figuring out his sexuality.
Plus, the entire group is off to Paris! And book readers know what that means (truth or dare time!).
Heartstopper stars Kit Connor (Nick), Joe Locke (Charlie), Yasmin Finney (Elle), William Gao (Tao), and Tobie Donovan (Isaac). Other returning actors include Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Sebastian Croft, and Rhea Norwood. Jenny Walser, Cormac Hyde-Corrin, and Olivia Colman will also star. A few new faces will join them, like Leila Khan as Sahar Zahid, Jack Barton as Nick’s older brother David, Bradley Riches as James McEwan, and Nima Taleghani as school teacher Mr. Farouk.
Season two of Heartstopper will premiere on Netflix on August 3.
