The ‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ Cast on Queer Outsiders and Slasher Secrets

In Fear Street: Prom Queen, campaigning for the crown could just be the last thing you do. Set in 1988, Netflix’s newest entry in the R.L. Stine-inspired franchise throws us into the wolfpack of Shadyside High’s popular girls, a clique known for their charm, cruelty, and cutthroat campaigns for prom queen. But when outsider Lori is suddenly nominated, the high school hierarchy is shaken—and people start disappearing.

The cast behind the bloodbath—Suzanna Son (Megan), David Iacono (Eddie), Ella Rubin (Sarah), Ariana Greenblatt (Debbie), and Rebecca Ablack (Shannon)—joined us to unpack why horror has always belonged to the misfits.

Horror Is for the Weird Kids

Son especially felt a connection with her character, Megan.

“I think it was beautiful, and it kind of healed a part of my inner child in a way to play who I think I needed to be friends with in high school. This person who was so unapologetically herself, so sweet and so loyal to her friends, it was just nice and healing.”

The horror franchise has long embraced queerness, othering, and found family—and Prom Queen is no different. From jocks and queen bees to loners and goths, the film nods to classic slasher tropes while making room for nuance.

What They Don’t Tell You About Filming Horror

Behind the blood and body count, horror filmmaking is surprisingly demanding—both physically and emotionally.

“It’s such a physical job,” Rubin said. “You don’t realize—you’re screaming, and your body is moving, and you’re running and shaking. You’re really embodying being terrified.” Her performance demanded full-body commitment, especially during scenes that required running or reacting to sudden scares.

“You have to witness your friends be terrified, and you’re just as terrified,” Ablack said. “That’s not just screaming—it’s emotional.” She explained that horror often gets written off as easy or surface-level, when in reality, it’s layered and demanding.

“The amount of running in this movie—I pulled both of my quads,” Son said, laughing. “They don’t tell you how athletic horror is.” From constant takes to elaborate chase sequences, it was more like training for a marathon than shooting a movie.

Staying scared on command was its own challenge. “You’re doing a really scared take, and then another scared take, and another scared take,” Greenblatt said. “So that definitely affects you physically and emotionally.”

To add to the atmosphere, the crew filmed in an actual abandoned school. “It adds a layer of eeriness,” Iacono said. “It helped a lot with building that sense of fear.”

And yes—there was plenty of screaming.

“I learned pretty quickly to scream from my stomach, not my throat,” Son said. “Otherwise, you’re done.” She noted that scream technique is essential if you want to make it through production with your voice intact.

“I feel like Ariana had a really good one,” Rubin said, nominating her co-star for best scream.

“Thanks, guys. I just drink a lot of tea after,” Greenblatt added, laughing. Vocal recovery became just as important as the scream itself.

Favorite Horror Deaths… and Why They’re Always Killing Women

From Terrifier 3 to Hereditary, the cast had plenty to say about gruesome horror deaths that stuck with them.

Rubin confessed she watched Terrifier 3 by accident: “I didn’t know what I was getting into… and I watched it right before bed.”

Rebecca Ablack voiced a question that lingers in the minds of many horror fans:

“All I can think of is women dying. Why are they always trying to kill us?”

She pointed to Scream as a perfect example, referencing Drew Barrymore’s iconic early death. Let’s talk about the real questions.

The observation speaks to a long-standing trope in the genre—one that places women at the center of violence and survival. In Prom Queen, those patterns are present, but the film also gives its female characters more agency, emotion, and power than the genre often allows.

Whether you’re watching for the screams, the blood, or the subtext, Fear Street: Prom Queen delivers it all with style, smarts, and just the right amount of camp.

Stream it May 23 on Netflix—just don’t wander off alone. And watch our interviews with the cast below!

  • Step Into Shadyside High’s Killer Prom: ‘Fear Street’s Immersive Horror Experience

Step Into Shadyside High’s Killer Prom: ‘Fear Street’s Immersive Horror Experience

Netflix just took prom night to a whole new level. Ahead of Fear Street: Prom Queen’s release on May 23, the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles was transformed into the blood-soaked halls of Shadyside High for an immersive prom experience that fans won’t soon forget.

    Prom Night…with a Body Count

From May 17 to May 19, fans of R.L. Stine’s iconic Fear Street series had the chance to relive the horror of 1988 prom night—but with plenty of scares. The Fonda Theatre’s grand ballroom became Shadyside High’s gymnasium, decked out with disco balls, punch bowls, and the perfect amount of eerie lighting to set the mood. But this wasn’t just any prom: flickering lights, a creeping sense of danger, and even a few dead high schoolers lurking in the shadows.

Attendees were encouraged to don their best ’80s prom attire, and even meet a few of the prom queen nominees as they mingled and showed off their dance moves. Press and influencers were invited to step into the madness, making it a night to remember. But isn’t that what prom is all about—glitz, glam, and a touch of danger?

If you were brave enough to wander through the library, you might have spotted a masked killer lurking behind the bookshelf. And those who stepped into the bathroom to powder their noses were met with a truly gruesome surprise. So that’s where Heather disappeared to…

The night culminated in a thrilling showdown with the masked killer and the crowning of a prom queen. Complete with stunts, special effects, and plenty of surprises, it was a blood-soaked spectacle from start to finish.

A Killer Cast and a Classic Slasher Tale

Fear Street: Prom Queen, directed by Matt Palmer (Calibre) and co-written with Donald McLeary, revives the essence of R.L. Stine’s 1992 novel with a fresh, bloody twist. The Shadyside High It Girls are fiercely battling for the Prom Queen crown. But when an unexpected outsider lands a spot on the court, things take a dark turn. One by one, the queen contenders begin to vanish, and what was supposed to be the biggest night of their lives quickly spirals into a blood-soaked nightmare.

The film stars India Fowler (The Agency), Suzanna Son (Red Rocket), Fina Strazza (Paper Girls), Chris Klein (American Pie), David Iacono (Dead Boy Detectives), Ella Rubin (Until Dawn), Ariana Greenblatt (Barbie), Lili Taylor (The Conjuring), and Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant).

The ensemble cast rounds out with Darrin Baker (The Strain), Rebecca Ablack (Ginny & Georgia), Ilan O’Driscoll, Damian Romeo (Ginny & Georgia), Dakota Taylor (Sullivan’s Crossing), Eden Summer Gilmore (Nancy Drew), Brennan Clost (Tiny Pretty Things), Cecilia Lee, and Ryan Rosery (Mayor of Kingstown).

‘Bridgerton’ Renewed for Seasons 5 and 6 as Netflix Unveils Season 4 Teaser

Dearest readers, Lady Whistledown has delivered the news we’ve all been waiting for. Netflix has officially renewed Bridgerton for not just one, but two more seasons—guaranteeing our return to Mayfair through Seasons 5 and 6. The announcement came just in time to accompany the release of another much-anticipated teaser for Season 4, which is set to premiere in 2026. If you thought you had seen enough scandal and ballgown drama, think again.

Season 4: A Cinderella Twist for Benedict

Season 4 promises to shine the spotlight on Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson), who steps out of the shadows and into the limelight for his own grand love story. His journey unfolds with the mysterious Lady in Silver—soon to be known as Sophie Baek, played by Yerin Ha—during a lavish masquerade ball hosted by Lady Bridgerton. Fans are already buzzing about the Cinderella-inspired plot, which will explore themes of class, identity, and forbidden romance in the Regency era.

Netflix’s trailer gives a tantalizing look at Benedict and Sophie’s first encounter, dripping with the kind of slow-burn romance that the series is famous for. Expect opulent sets, breathtaking gowns, and a touch of Lady Whistledown’s ever-watchful eye as secrets unravel across Mayfair.

    How Queer is ‘Bridgerton’?

Bridgerton has long teased at queer representation, but how much of that will fully bloom in Season 4 remains to be seen. Netflix’s official trailer didn’t reveal much in terms of LGBTQ+ storylines, but fans are hopeful that whispers from the ton will finally be heard.

In previous seasons, hints of Benedict Bridgerton’s (Luke Thompson) bisexuality were teased, and Season 3’s steamy threesome moment seemed to confirm what fans had long speculated. His relationship with Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha) is set to take center stage in Season 4, but the ton is abuzz with rumors that his fluidity may still be part of his journey. Showrunner Jess Brownell hinted that Benedict’s arc will explore more of his identity, suggesting that the Regency’s most artistic Bridgerton isn’t quite ready to settle down just yet. “Benedict has always been a little lost—or free depending on the way you want to look at it,” she said.

Season 3 also hinted at a queer romance with the young Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd). While her journey is still under wraps, fans are speculating about her chemistry with Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza), John Stirling’s cousin. In a twist on Julia Quinn’s novels, Francesca is set to explore a same-sex romance that could shake up Mayfair’s rigid traditions. Showrunner Jess Brownell, who is queer herself, has expressed a desire to ensure LGBTQ+ stories have happy endings, saying, “When approaching a queer story, it’s very important to me that we are able to see a queer happily-ever-after and not let it be queer trauma.”

Whether Season 4 delivers on these promising hints remains to be seen, but if the past is any indication, Bridgerton is just getting started with its exploration of love in all its forms.

    The Legacy Continues

The announcement of Seasons 5 and 6 has solidified Bridgerton as one of Netflix’s flagship series. Each of the previous three seasons ranked among Netflix’s Most Popular, with Seasons 1 and 3 currently holding spots in the platform’s Top 10. The global success of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story only further proves that the ton’s grip on our hearts isn’t loosening anytime soon.

Executive producer Shonda Rhimes, alongside showrunner Jess Brownell, is set to continue steering the ship, ensuring more ballroom drama, scandalous letters, and whispered secrets for years to come. Lady Whistledown, it seems, won’t be putting down her quill anytime soon.

    Mark Your Calendars

With Benedict’s Cinderella-esque tale on the horizon and the promise of two more seasons, Bridgerton is showing no signs of slowing down. Dust off your finest gloves and prepare for another wild ride through the ton. Season 4 lands in 2026—and it’s just the beginning.

  • Netflix’s ‘The Royals’ Is The ‘Bridgerton’ Drama For Indian People – They’re So Hot It’s Offensive

Netflix’s ‘The Royals’ Is The ‘Bridgerton’ Drama For Indian People – They’re So Hot It’s Offensive

If your summer streaming lineup is in need of a refresh, Netflix’s The Royals is here to serve grandeur, glam, and an irresistibly attractive cast wrapped in a rich, romantic drama. With its palace intrigue, class-clashing romance, and a healthy dose of eye candy, the new Indian series is already making waves—and making us swoon.

Set in the fictional city of Morpur, India, The Royals tells the story of Aviraaj Singh, a dashing modern-day prince with a crumbling family estate, and Sophia Kanmani Shekhar, a powerful and stylish CEO with a razor-sharp mind and an eye for business. When Aviraaj’s once-grand palace faces financial ruin, Sophia swoops in with a bold idea: transform the aging royal residence into a five-star bed-and-breakfast. What starts as a business deal quickly turns into something more, and let’s just say—neither the decor nor the sexual tension is subtle.

A Royal Plot With a Modern Twist

Created by Four More Shots Please! duo Rangita and Ishita Pritish Nandy, and directed by The Night Manager’s Priyanka Ghose and Hip Hip Hurray’s Nupur Asthana, The Royals mixes Bollywood charm with bingeable drama. Screenwriter Neha Veena Sharma (Ziddi Girls) ensures that the dialogue sparkles with tension, flirtation, and cultural nuance, as class differences and personal pride clash with a romance neither Aviraaj nor Sophia saw coming.

A prince trying to save his family’s palace is forced to team up with a savvy executive in order to save it.

Think Bridgerton meets Succession—but with way better weather and a lot more color. And with every episode, the stakes climb as the bed-and-breakfast project brings the pair closer together—and closer to everything they’ve been running from.

The Cast Is Scorching—And We’re Not Just Talking Chemistry

Let’s talk about the heat. Leading man Ishaan Khatter (The Perfect Couple) as Aviraaj Singh is all brooding charm, sharp cheekbones, and aristocratic swagger. Whether he’s riding horseback across a beach or striding through palace grounds in a tailored sherwani, he delivers peak prince fantasy.

Bhumi Pednekar (Badhaai Do) as Sophia Kanmani Shekhar and Ishaan Khatter (The Perfect Couple) as Aviraaj Singh. Photo: Netflix

Opposite him, Bhumi Pednekar (Badhaai Do) shines as Sophia, a self-made woman who rocks a power suit just as effortlessly as she commands a room. She’s equal parts elegance and steel, and watching her challenge Aviraaj’s outdated ideas of royalty is as satisfying as watching them flirt over business plans.

The ensemble cast is just as star-studded—and just as hot. Screen icons like Zeenat Aman (Panipat) and Milind Soman (Emergency) bring gravitas and nostalgia, while rising stars like Vihaan Samat (CTRL) and Kavya Trehan (Hush Hush) keep things fresh and energetic. Nora Fatehi (Bharat), Dino Morea (The Empire), and Chunky Panday (Liger) also appear, making the palace feel less like a crumbling relic and more like the VIP section of fashion week.

Bhumi Pednekar (Badhaai Do) as Sophia Kanmani Shekhar and Ishaan Khatter (The Perfect Couple) as Aviraaj Singh.

There’s also a delightful cameo from singer Lisa Mishra (Call Me Bae), and Udit Arora (Crash Course) as Kunal Mehta—bringing comic relief and a healthy dose of chaos to the mix. If you’re looking for a new fictional crush, trust: this show delivers options.

    Style, Setting, and Swoon-Worthy Vibes

The fictional setting of Morpur is a character in itself, showcasing lavish interiors, sunlit courtyards, and sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. It’s the kind of place where drama feels inevitable—and every room looks like it belongs on a luxury wedding mood board. Costume design leans into both tradition and modernity, offering plenty of fashion inspo whether you prefer embroidered silks or minimalist power dressing.

And then there’s the soundtrack—lush, cinematic, and perfectly matched to every flirtation, fight, and emotional breakthrough. From upbeat fusion tracks to aching ballads, the music only deepens the emotional pull of each episode.

As the royal heir and the self-made CEO transform the estate into a luxury bed-and-breakfast, their contentious relationship takes a turn toward romance.

Why The Royals Belongs on Your Watchlist

More than just a love story, The Royals is a narrative about legacy, reinvention, and breaking down barriers—both personal and societal. It’s about building something new without forgetting where you came from. For LGBTQ+ audiences, the themes of identity, self-determination, and found family will resonate, even as the romance plays out between a straight couple.

It’s also refreshing to see a female character like Sophia lead the charge: unapologetically ambitious, complex, and never sidelined by her love interest. Her success isn’t framed as a problem—it’s the reason she’s on this journey in the first place. Add in Aviraaj’s slow transformation from stubborn royal to thoughtful partner, and the result is a romance that actually feels earned.

    Stream It Now

The Royals is now streaming on Netflix, and trust us—you’ll want to binge it all in one go. Whether you’re in it for the steamy chemistry, the royal glow-up, or just to watch Ishaan Khatter in riding boots (no judgment), this is the kind of escapist drama we need more of.

So pour a glass of wine, grab your favorite silk robe, and settle in. The crown jewels have arrived—and they’re hotter than ever.

  • Griffin Matthews Reflects on Colman Domingo’s Impact and Career-Changing Advice

Griffin Matthews Reflects on Colman Domingo’s Impact and Career-Changing Advice

Griffin Matthews knows the power of representation—and he’s got a mentor who’s been paving the way for years: Colman Domingo. The two actors share more than just screen credits; they share a bond built on mutual respect, artistic ambition, and an unapologetic embrace of Black queer visibility in Hollywood.

We sat down with Matthews to talk about his role in the final season of Netflix’s thriller You, but it quickly turned into a Colman Domingo fan club moment. Because how could it not?

“I just finished Coleman’s series—all that Coleman Domingo is doing. That is what I want to do,” Matthews told Gayety. “The career that Coleman Domingo is having is absolutely incredible.”

    Netflix

    How One Conversation Changed Everything

Both Matthews and Domingo have stepped into the shoes of civil rights leader Bayard Rustin—but in two very different ways. Domingo portrayed Rustin in Netflix’s Rustin, a 2024 biopic produced by Higher Ground Productions that earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. His performance brought Rustin’s legacy to life, spotlighting his role in organizing the 1963 March on Washington and his activism as an openly gay Black man.

For Matthews, the opportunity came through Genius: MLK/X, the fourth season of National Geographic’s acclaimed anthology series. The series, which premiered in February 2024, explored the lives of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, with Matthews taking on the role of Rustin.

When Matthews first got the audition for Genius, he wasn’t sure he was ready. “I was like, ‘Colman, they want me to audition for Bayard. I’m not ready. I can’t do it. I don’t think that they’re going to see me as Bayard,’” Matthews recalled.

Domingo’s response was instant and impactful. “He was like, ‘Griffin, you can do it. You have a European-ness about you, like James Baldwin… You’ve got that dandy thing,’” Matthews said. “And I got the job literally days later.”

That vote of confidence wasn’t just a boost—it was a turning point. “We have touch-base sessions with each other where we just talk about the business and our lives inside of the business. I count him as a friend and a mentor,” Matthews said.

Fashion as a Form of Liberation

Domingo’s influence isn’t limited to acting. His bold fashion choices have also inspired Matthews to take up space unapologetically. At a recent lunch, Domingo told him something that stuck:

“I don’t think he’d mind that I’m sharing this, but he said to me, ‘I dress for all of us. I dress for you, and I dress for all of the Black men that are trying to elevate,’” Matthews shared.

“It’s not just for him. It is giving me a window to go, I can wear a yellow suit on the red carpet because Colman is doing all of those things,” Matthews said. “I think I can walk in here with this yellow suit, and I don’t think people are going to go, ‘What is he doing?’ I think we’re going, ‘Yeah, that’s what we’re all doing now.’”

A Dream to Lead—and to Disrupt

With Domingo’s mentorship lighting the way, Matthews is ready to take his own path forward. “I want to lead a series. It hasn’t happened yet. I’ve been in the business for 20-plus years, and I tend to play the position of the disruptor. And I would love to lead a series where people get to peer into the world of what it actually is to be a gay Black man living in 2025,” he said.

He’s clear on his goal: to tell stories that go beyond surface representation and into the real lives of queer Black men. “We have to start to not just have these characters in place, but we’ve got to go home with them so we can really know what’s happening behind those closed doors,” Matthews explained.

Matthews credits Domingo for showing him what’s possible. “He’s a real artist. A real one,” he said proudly. “Anything he’s doing, I want to be part of it.”

Netflix Heartthrobs Unite for Medieval Horror Film ‘Rapture’

Get ready for a frightfully fabulous blend of historical drama and zombie horror. A Plague of Biblical Proportions

According to a synopsis first reported by Deadline, Rapture unfolds in the year 1348, within the isolated walls of Lansley Abbey, a medieval Yorkshire monastery home to ten devout monks. Their routine lives of prayer and preservation are thrown into disarray when a mysterious messenger arrives bearing two things: a grim warning and a deadly illness.

The affliction spreads quickly and grotesquely — beginning with hemorrhagic fever and ending with the rise of the infected as “revenants,” or undead beings. As the world outside begins to rot, the monks inside are faced with escalating tensions, moral conflict, and the ultimate question: should they throw open their gates in compassion, or close ranks to protect the sacred knowledge housed within?

    Blood, Betrayal and Bisexual Energy

With Heartstopper’s Kit Connor and Élite star Manu Ríos headlining alongside the ever-versatile Will Poulter, queer fans are especially buzzing over the cast lineup — though any LGBTQ+ plotlines remain unconfirmed. Still, hopes are high (and jokes are flying) about potential “monk-on-monk” moments.

Behind the camera is Jordan Tannahill, a Governor General’s Literary Award-winning playwright making his feature film debut. A noted voice in LGBTQ+ arts and culture, Tannahill’s involvement is raising expectations for both substance and scares.

“We have all been blown away by the vision Jordan has for Rapture,” said Gabrielle Stewart, CEO of HanWay Films. “It is rare to have such an atmospheric and terrifying zombie horror film that inhabits such an authentic historical world, with complex characters grappling with the biggest moral dilemmas.”

Coming Soon to a Cloister Near You

Rapture is set to begin production later this year in Hungary, with additional casting to be announced. While no release date has been confirmed, the film is already drawing interest for its genre-blending premise and bold casting.

Whether it delivers theological introspection or just hot monks fighting zombies, one thing is certain: Rapture has the makings of a cult hit.

Stay tuned for more updates — and maybe, just maybe, a little undead romance.

Disrupting Joe Goldberg: Griffin Matthews Brings Queer Black Realness to Netflix’s ‘You’

Griffin Matthews enters the final season of You with a mission—and a killer sense of style. As Teddy Lockwood, the outcast brother-in-law of Joe Goldberg’s latest obsession, Matthews delivers the rare voice of reason in a show known for its chaos, privilege, and psychological twists.

“This is the first job I’ve ever had where I watched all of the seasons and then found myself inside of it,” Matthews told Gayety. “Day one, I walk onto set and I’m like, ‘Oh God, that’s the cage. Oh God, that’s actually Penn.’”

    Who Is Griffin Matthews?

Griffin Matthews is an actor, writer, and activist best known for roles in The Flight Attendant, She-Hulk, and Genius: MLK/X. Offscreen, he co-founded the Uganda Project, a nonprofit that supports students in East Africa, and co-wrote the acclaimed musical Witness Uganda, based on that work. Now, he stars as Teddy in the final chapter of the Netflix thriller.

Teddy Lockwood may be new to You‘s universe, but he makes an impression fast. Positioned as an outsider within the elite Lockwood family, Teddy brings a grounded, empathetic energy that sharply contrasts with the show’s usual players. He isn’t just a supporting character—he’s a much-needed reality check.

“He’s a different race, different culture, different economic background,” Matthews explained. “I loved that I was going to bring a different perspective to all of these rich, billionaire, white British people—murderer people.”

    Playing the Disruptor

For Matthews, these roles are more than just great TV—they’re part of a bigger mission. With every role he takes on, he challenges the boundaries of who gets to exist onscreen, especially in thrillers where Black queer characters are often an afterthought.

“I generally play the disruptor,” he said. “And I think normally the Black and the queer people—we’re the disruptors of life. We get to show people that there’s another version of this story.”

Teddy is that disruption. He’s stylish and sharp-tongued, yes, but he’s also a voice of compassion and truth in a world consumed by lies. And for viewers watching at home, Teddy represents something we rarely see in a psychological thriller: authentic, layered representation.

“It’s time for characters we don’t just see—we go home with them,” Matthews added. “We get to really know what’s behind closed doors.”

Matthews hopes his character will be the beginning of a broader shift in the genre. “I’d love to lead a series where people get to peer into the world of what it actually is to be a gay Black man living in 2025.”
