    Yelich, known as Lorde’s younger sister, took Gayety by the hand this week to reflect on what inspired this candid collection of songs. In an exclusive interview, she revealed that she composed much of the EP in real time, documenting experiences as they were unfolding.

    “This is my most personal record yet,” Yelich said. “I wrote these tracks while living them. It feels like a sonic goodbye to big relationships and past parts of myself. Releasing it now just feels right.”

    Sail Away: A Song of Queer Friendship and Lost Love

    One of the most compelling tracks, “Sail Away,” delves into the complexity of a queer relationship that blurred the line between friendship and romance. Yelich says she drew on her own experiences—sharing beds, heartfelt conversations and an unspoken longing.

    “It’s about someone I was very close to, maybe even in love with, and those feelings were never mutual,” she explained. “Queer friendships like that can be haunting. You lose a friend, a lover and a confidante all at once.”

    Inspired partly by Chappell Roan’s Good Luck Babe, “Sail Away” explores the uncharted emotional terrain of female intimacy and same-sex longing. Through its haunting melody and reflective lyrics, the song captures the push and pull of bonds that are difficult to define.

    A Bedroom Full of Memories

    The EP’s title, Fame Is a Bedroom, echoes its intimate tone. Yelich describes the bedroom as her creative cocoon – a space for writing, crying, healing and self-reflection.

    “My bedroom is where I do everything—rest, dream, talk on the phone. It’s private, messy and sacred all at once,” she said. “These songs are conversations I’ve had behind closed doors.”

    Each song unpacks a piece of her story, from her first move to New York at 18 to coming to terms with her queer identity and navigating emotional entanglements.

    Influences That Shaped the Sound

    Musically, Fame Is a Bedroom features lush, atmospheric production guided by influences like Mk.gee, Holly Humberstone, Ethel Cain, Bon Iver, Billie Marten, Gigi Perez and Chappell Roan. Yelich aimed for songs that breathed – where lyrics and arrangement had room to evoke mood and memory.

    “These artists inspired me to make space in my music for vulnerability,” she said. “I wanted the EP to feel moody, emotional and human.”

    Fame Is a Bedroom speaks to queer audiences through its exploration of female friendship, longing and the evolving understanding of sexuality. Yelich, who came out at age 19, says her identity is inseparable from her creative expression.

    “These songs are rooted in women’s lives—my own, my sisters’ and friends’. I often write to figure things out,” she said.

    She hopes listeners will find resonance in the silences, the questions and the spaces between words—moments where identity forms and fractures.

    Lessons Learned Through Heartbreak

    Yelich says emotional honesty and self-awareness were essential to writing this EP. She credits painful breakups and friendships for prompting personal growth.

    “Loss demands introspection. I had to own my part in letting go. Working on attachment and setting boundaries has helped me develop stronger relationships.”

    On emotional boundaries, she admits it’s a work in progress. Communication and self-care, she says, are ongoing practices.

    Growing Up as Lorde’s Sister

    The shadow of fame has shaped Yelich’s life from a young age. As Lorde’s sister, she faced inevitable public scrutiny—search engines knew her address and her family biography.

    “It’s weird to be a teenager with your life already cataloged online,” she recalled. “You learn to develop thick skin early. Fame opened doors for my music, and I’m grateful. Still, this EP was about being heard for myself.”

    She acknowledges the challenge of carving a creative identity that stands apart from her famous sibling.

    “I come from a family of writers. Music was always in me. Trusting my own voice—without comparison—became my North Star.”

    Fame Is a Bedroom wraps up a chapter in Yelich’s life, offering a space to process and let go. At the same time, it serves as a bold announcement of her artistic independence and personal evolution.

    Laverne Cox is once again making television history—this time, on the game show stage. The Emmy-nominated actress, producer, and LGBTQ+ advocate will appear on ABC’s Celebrity Family Feud on Thursday, July 31, 2025, leading the first all-transgender team to ever compete on the show.

    Cox’s team, known as “Team Laverne,” features a dynamic group of trans entertainers and activists, including media mogul TS Madison, pop artist Mila Jam, and several other prominent figures from the LGBTQ+ community. The team will face off against Grammy-winning DJ Diplo and the casts of the long-running soap operas General Hospital and The Young and the Restless in the episode, which is part of Celebrity Family Feud‘s 11th season.

    “Team @lavernecox is here to have fun and look good doing it!” the official Family Feud Instagram account posted on Wednesday. “✨ Watch them on #CelebrityFamilyFeud as they play for @tsmadisonstarterhouse tomorrow at 8/7c on ABC! Stream on Hulu.”

    Cox’s episode marks a major moment for representation on prime-time television, showcasing a joyful celebration of transgender talent and solidarity. Airing at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC, the episode will also be available to stream on Hulu.

    “This was a beautiful moment of chosen family and sisterhood,” Cox wrote on Instagram. “We need each other now more than ever. We are all we have.”

While the show has had LGBTQ+ celebrities in the past, this is the first time an all-trans team has taken the buzzer. The milestone arrives during a time when transgender representation in media continues to face political backlash—but also when the call for visibility, joy, and support has never been louder.

    The format of the episode will feature multiple rounds. Team Laverne will go head-to-head with Team Diplo in the first segment, while the casts of General Hospital and The Young and the Restless battle it out in the second. The winners of each round typically proceed to the Fast Money round, where they compete for a cash prize to donate to their chosen charity.

    Jay recently sat down with Gayety to discuss the motivation and process behind his unique portfolio, revealing that his work aims to evoke a range of emotions, from arousal to a sense of peace. “If there’s an arousal, fantastic. If you feel a sense of peace, wonderful. If both happened at the same time. Even better,” he said, speaking to the nuanced reception he hopes his art receives.     The inspiration for this bold creative direction stemmed from organic, positive feedback he received on his initial erotic photography work. “I think what happened for me was I was creating this sort of erotic portfolio and sometimes working with people who are particularly proud of certain areas of their body and wanted to showcase them anyways,”

    To set his work apart and add an intellectual layer, Jay incorporates historical and cultural references throughout his books. A key feature of “Portraits of the Penis” is the inclusion of Shakespearean quotes and nicknames for the male member. This clever juxtaposition of classical literature with contemporary erotic imagery serves as a winking nod to history, reminding viewers that the fascination with the human body is timeless.

    Similarly, “The Book of Butts” draws inspiration from ancient sculptures and the art of the Renaissance, playfully crowning Michelangelo as the “Master of the Butts” for his refined skill in sculpting the male derriere.

    The books also sprinkle in humorous and unexpected quotes from figures like Mozart and even Betty White, adding a lighthearted and conversational tone to the work. One such quote, attributed to Betty White, reads, “If the guy’s a cutie, you’ve got to tap that booty.”

Jay aims to make them feel comfortable and empowered during the photoshoots, creating a dynamic where the models are active collaborators in the creative process, not just passive subjects. This focus on collaboration and consent ensures that the final images are a true reflection of a “moment that they share,” as he puts it, rather than a forced or impersonal expression.

    For Jay, the project is a deep dive into the unique aspects of the male body. He believes that just like a fingerprint, “everybody’s penis is kind of like a fingerprint – it’s like everybody’s different in some way or another.” This sentiment of celebrating diversity and uniqueness is a core theme in his work, which features a wide array of models with different shades, shapes, and sizes, all in a variety of states.

    As his portfolio grows, so does his ambition. Jay is already considering expanding his artistic exploration to include other body parts, such as hands and feet. This ongoing journey is a testament to his belief that art can be found in every part of the human form, and that an artistic lens can transform the intimate into something universally beautiful.

    The Florida Attorney General Just Demanded The Guest List of Who Attended a Local Drag Show

    Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has launched an investigation into a local restaurant and bar after it hosted a Pride event featuring drag performances, escalating ongoing tensions between state officials and the LGBTQ+ community.

    The venue in question, the Kilted Mermaid, held a Pride-themed tea dance on June 29 to celebrate Florida’s LGBTQ+ history. The event, which organizers promoted as family-friendly, included performances by local drag artists and was open to attendees of all ages. According to organizers and attendees, the celebration was inclusive, positive and suitable for families.

    But now, the restaurant is under legal scrutiny. In early July, Uthmeier’s office issued a subpoena demanding a wide range of documents from the Kilted Mermaid, including its guest list, reservation records, performer contracts and even surveillance footage from the event. The sweeping legal request has prompted alarm among LGBTQ+ advocates, civil rights organizations and privacy experts.

    In a statement released Tuesday, Uthmeier claimed that the event “exposed children to adult, sexualized performances.” However, the attorney general’s office has not publicly disclosed any concrete evidence supporting those claims, nor has it specified which aspects of the performances were allegedly inappropriate. Critics say the vague language used by the state mirrors prior political attempts to censor queer expression under the guise of child protection.

    A Familiar Playbook in Florida

    The legal targeting of the Kilted Mermaid is not an isolated incident in Florida. Since 2023, state lawmakers and elected officials have pushed through a slate of bills aimed at restricting LGBTQ+ rights, particularly in the realms of public education, healthcare, and drag performances.

    One of the most high-profile laws sought to ban minors from attending drag shows — even when the shows were labeled as family-friendly. Under the proposed legislation, venues found in violation could face fines and the suspension or revocation of their liquor licenses. Performers, too, could face misdemeanor charges and steep penalties.

    The law prompted swift backlash from LGBTQ+ organizations and allies across the country. Many saw it as part of a broader political campaign to vilify queer culture — especially drag — by framing it as inherently dangerous to children. Drag artists and LGBTQ+ families pushed back, arguing that family-oriented drag shows are an expression of joy, creativity, and community, not a threat.

    In July 2023, a federal judge blocked the enforcement of the law after the popular Orlando LGBTQ+ restaurant Hamburger Mary’s filed a lawsuit. The restaurant, which regularly hosts inclusive drag brunches and family events, argued that the law infringed upon First Amendment rights. The judge agreed, declaring the statute unconstitutional.

    Still, state officials have not backed down from pursuing drag events under other legal avenues, often relying on ambiguous moral claims and selective enforcement. The subpoena against the Kilted Mermaid appears to be the latest example.

    Community Responds to What It Sees as Intimidation

    LGBTQ+ advocates are warning that the attorney general’s investigation into the Pride tea dance is an act of political intimidation, not law enforcement.

    “This is a baseless, politically motivated attack on a safe and inclusive space,” said Nadine Ramirez, executive director of the Florida Equality Network. “The attorney general is wasting taxpayer dollars on a witch hunt because queer people dared to gather and celebrate themselves during Pride.”

    Ramirez noted that the subpoena’s demand for guest lists and surveillance footage raises serious privacy concerns. “What business does the state have identifying who attended a lawful Pride event? This is a gross overreach and a violation of basic civil liberties.”

    Organizers of the Kilted Mermaid event have remained largely silent amid the investigation, likely on legal advice. However, a brief statement posted to the venue’s Instagram account in early July thanked the community for its support and reiterated that the June 29 event complied with all local and state regulations.

    “We created a welcoming environment for everyone — including families — and we are proud of that,” the post read.

    Drag and the Ongoing Cultural Battle

    Drag culture has long played a central role in LGBTQ+ history, from early acts of defiance at Stonewall to the mainstream success of shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race. But in recent years, it has also become a flashpoint in the culture wars, with conservative politicians increasingly using drag performances as a wedge issue.

    Advocates argue that this renewed moral panic around drag is a political tactic aimed at energizing a voter base ahead of elections, rather than a legitimate public safety concern. They point out that drag performances — especially those aimed at younger audiences — are overwhelmingly benign and celebratory.

    “There’s nothing inherently sexual about a drag queen reading a storybook or lip-syncing to a pop song,” said Professor Charles Whitmore, a legal scholar at the University of Miami who specializes in LGBTQ+ rights. “The idea that every drag performance is inappropriate is rooted in bias, not evidence.”

    What Happens Next?

    As of now, no charges have been filed against the Kilted Mermaid or the event organizers. The outcome of the investigation remains unclear, but legal experts expect it could be challenged in court, particularly if the attorney general attempts to penalize the venue without proving any violations of law.

    In the meantime, LGBTQ+ organizations across Florida are urging residents to remain vigilant and vocal. They are also encouraging local businesses to know their rights in the face of potential legal action.

    “This is not just about one restaurant,” said Ramirez. “It’s about whether or not queer people in Florida can live their lives openly, celebrate their culture, and gather without fear of government surveillance or retaliation.”

The show, which debuted earlier this year on Prime Video, has quickly built a passionate fanbase thanks to its unapologetically queer humor, heartfelt characters, and Skinner’s distinct voice.

    “We’ve been really pleased by the completion rates of Motorheads and Overcompensating,” Sanders said. “So we’re going to be in conversations with all three [YA series]… Each show is working on Season 2 writers rooms, and we’ll hope to have renewal announcements soon on some, if not all, of those shows.”

    While nothing has been officially renewed just yet, the news that the creative team behind Overcompensating is actively working in a writers’ room is a promising sign for fans eager to see what happens next.

    According to Billboard, the 35-time Grammy Award winner grossed a staggering $407.6 million across just 32 shows in nine cities, with more than 1.6 million tickets sold. This landmark accomplishment cements Cowboy Carter not only as a musical triumph but also as a cultural movement redefining country music’s boundaries.

    The tour, which launched earlier this year in support of Beyoncé’s genre-blending 2024 country album Cowboy Carter, is now the shortest tour in history to gross over $400 million. In an industry where high tour revenues usually rely on long global runs, Beyoncé has again broken the mold — and the ceiling.

    A Tour Like No Other

    The Cowboy Carter Tour hit major cities across North America, including Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Houston, Washington, D.C., Dallas, and Atlanta, before heading to Europe for sold-out shows in London and Paris. Beyoncé wrapped the tour with a powerful final performance in Las Vegas on July 26, which included a surprise Destiny’s Child reunion that sent fans into a frenzy.

    Her three-hour set featured over 40 songs and included appearances from some of the biggest names in music and pop culture. Special guests throughout the tour included her husband Jay-Z, Miley Cyrus, Nigerian-American country star Shaboozey, and international dance troupe The Mayyas. Her daughters, Blue Ivy and Rumi Carter, also made heartwarming cameos, bringing a family touch to the glittering spectacle.

    Stage design included dazzling visuals: a towering red horseshoe, a gleaming mechanical gold horse, and even a lowrider convertible that Beyoncé used to command the stage with effortless Southern flair.

    More Than a Concert — A Statement

    While the tour broke financial records, Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter era has always been about more than numbers. The album, released in March 2024, was born out of an experience in which the singer felt rejected by the country music industry. Rather than stepping back, she leaned in — diving deep into the genre’s roots and crafting a body of work that highlighted the Black influence on country music, historically and currently.

    “It was very clear that I wasn’t welcomed,” Beyoncé wrote on Instagram at the time of the album’s release. “But because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of country music and studied our rich musical archive.”

    She continued, “It feels good to see how music can unite so many people around the world, while also amplifying the voices of some of the people who have dedicated so much of their lives educating on our musical history.”

    Beyoncé also credited the criticism she received as fuel for creative expansion: “The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me. act ii is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work.”

    A Grammy Milestone — and a Nod to the Past

    That bold creative risk paid off. At the 2025 Grammy Awards, Cowboy Carter took home three awards, including the coveted Album of the Year — a long-overdue win for Beyoncé, who had been nominated for the title four previous times.

    In her emotional acceptance speech, Beyoncé thanked her team, collaborators, and fans, dedicating the win to Linda Martell, the first Black woman to chart in country music and a contributor to Cowboy Carter.

    “Opening doors. God bless y’all. Thank you so much,” she said, looking visibly moved.

    “When you do a movie, it’s a moment,” Murray continued. “You’re there for three, four months. That movie’s an hour and a half long versus someone sculpting 136 hours of good-quality television. I think that impact might be a little bit vaster, you know what I mean?”
