Cynthia Erivo and Lena Waithe Spark Engagement Rumors After NAACP Image Awards Appearance

Cynthia Erivo and Lena Waithe have once again sparked rumors about their relationship after a joint appearance at the NAACP Image Awards on February 22, reigniting engagement speculation that has swirled around the two for weeks.

Erivo, who was nominated for Entertainer of the Year and Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in Wicked, arrived at the event alongside Waithe. Their appearance follows months of speculation about their romantic status, especially after Erivo was seen wearing a diamond ring at the 2025 Grammys. Although the ring was later confirmed not to be an engagement ring, the sighting fueled ongoing rumors about their private relationship.

While neither Erivo nor Waithe has publicly confirmed their romantic connection, the two have been linked since at least 2020. Their relationship is believed to have begun after meeting at the 2018 Met Gala. In a 2021 interview with Variety, Waithe revealed that she had long been a fan of Erivo’s performance in The Color Purple before they met, and that they had “been vibing” ever since.

Erivo has shared rare glimpses of their bond on social media, referring to Waithe as “perfection” in one of the few photos of the pair together on her Instagram feed. Over the years, the two have been spotted together at various high-profile events, including the BET Awards, the GLAAD Media Awards, and the Golden Globes, but they have kept their relationship mostly private.

Their closeness has been particularly noticeable in recent years, coinciding with Waithe’s separation from ex-wife Alana Mayo, with their divorce finalized in 2021. Despite their low-key public presence, the two have shown unwavering support for each other, often seen cheering one another on at major events. Waithe was by Erivo’s side at the 2024 Wicked premiere, helped hold Erivo’s gown at the 2024 Tony Awards, and sat beside her at the 2025 Golden Globes and Grammys.

Erivo has also expressed admiration for Waithe, often sharing heartfelt posts celebrating the writer and producer. For example, in one Instagram tribute to Waithe’s birthday, Erivo wrote a moving message expressing her respect and affection for her partner.

Fans of the couple have continued to speculate about their relationship, but Erivo and Waithe have kept their personal lives out of the public eye. Their appearance at the NAACP Image Awards is just another example of their quiet but strong presence in each other’s lives.

While they haven’t made any public declarations about the status of their relationship, their ongoing support for one another is undeniable. As their relationship continues to unfold under the radar, fans remain hopeful for more insight into their bond. Many are eagerly awaiting the possibility of an official announcement — or perhaps more clarity on that “not an engagement” ring — when Erivo takes the stage at the upcoming 2025 Oscars, where she is expected to complete her EGOT collection.

Though the full extent of their relationship may remain a mystery, one thing is certain: Erivo and Waithe are a powerful representation of strong Black queer women in the entertainment world, and fans are fully supportive of their journey — wherever it may lead.

Pedro Pascal Slams Anti-Trans Bigotry, Calls Policies “Vile” and “Pathetic”

Pedro Pascal has issued a powerful rebuke against anti-transgender bigotry, condemning recent policies aimed at stripping rights from the transgender community as “vile” and “pathetic.”

In an Instagram post over the weekend, the The Last of Us star shared a photo of a message seen on a building that read: “A world without trans people has never existed and never will.” Pascal captioned the image, telling his nearly nine million followers that he would not stand by while transgender individuals are targeted.

“I can’t think of anything more vile and small and pathetic than terrorizing the smallest, most vulnerable community of people who want nothing from you, except the right to exist,” Pascal wrote. The post quickly garnered more than 750,000 likes.

Though Pascal did not directly reference specific policies in his post, his comments align with recent actions taken by the Trump administration, which has rolled out several executive orders restricting rights for transgender and non-binary people. These orders include declaring “only two sexes” as official U.S. policy, banning transgender women and girls from competing in women’s sports, restricting gender-affirming care for trans youth under 19, and prohibiting transgender individuals from serving in the military. Additionally, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies have been removed from federal agencies.

One of the most controversial changes has been the State Department’s new passport policy, which only recognizes male and female gender markers, based on the sex recorded at birth. This has led to difficulties for many transgender individuals, including Euphoria star Hunter Schafer, who revealed she was issued a passport listing her as “male” despite identifying as a woman.

Pascal, an outspoken ally of the LGBTQ+ community, has been particularly vocal in his support of the transgender community, motivated in part by his sister, actress Lux Pascal, who is transgender. Following his post condemning anti-trans bigotry, Pascal shared a black-and-white photo of his sister posing at the Viña del Mar International Song Festival in Chile, simply captioning it: “Lux.”

Earlier this month, Pascal also posted a video of the late trans activist Cecilia Gentili giving a stirring speech at the New York University Lavender Graduation ceremony for LGBTQ+ college students in May 2023. Gentili’s powerful words urged the audience not to minimize the seriousness of the issues facing the transgender community.

“Do not allow anyone to tell you that this is not a big deal, or that this is just a culture war, or that trans people are overstating the seriousness of what is going on,” Gentili said in the video. “I’ve been a trans person for nearly 50 years… Knowing your identity, who you are, and where you come from is powerful… I think one of the most important things that we can do for young people is to share those stories. Once we know who we are, we cannot be stopped.”

In his caption, Pascal highlighted Gentili’s words, writing: “Know who you are. Progress is inevitable.”

Fans of Pascal have continued to praise him for his unwavering support of the trans community, with many expressing admiration for his advocacy. One fan summed it up succinctly: “Could his flag get any greener?”

  • Another Lawsuit Filed Against Drag Entertainer Shangela Over Alleged Sexual Assault

Another Lawsuit Filed Against Drag Entertainer Shangela Over Alleged Sexual Assault

A new civil lawsuit has been filed against celebrity drag performer Shangela, accusing the entertainer of sexual assault.

The complaint, filed Monday in the New York Supreme Court, was obtained by Out. The lawsuit, brought by Eric Poff, alleges that the incident occurred in October 2017 after Poff, then a production assistant on Hurricane Bianca: From Russia with Hate, met Shangela—whose legal name is Chantaize Darius Jeremy Pierce—on set in New York City.

According to the complaint, Poff and Pierce went to a Manhattan bar where Poff claims to have consumed one or two drinks. He alleges his drink was “spiked” with a drug, leaving him with no memory of events between consuming the drink and later regaining partial consciousness in a hotel room. The complaint further states that Poff was “semi-conscious” when he was sexually assaulted by a man referred to as John Doe, with Pierce allegedly watching from the corner of the room. The lawsuit also accuses Pierce of sexually assaulting Poff.

Poff’s attorney, James A. Vagnini, said that Poff does not know the identity of the John Doe defendant.

The complaint goes on to argue that Poff could not consent to any sexual activity due to his impaired state, and it claims Pierce subsequently sent money to Poff via PayPal. Poff is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, along with pre- and post-judgment interest and legal fees.

In a statement, Poff said, “Sexual assault is a particularly taboo subject in the LGBTQ community… My hope is to hold accountable DJ Piece/Shangela, shed light on the impact of sexual assault on those who experience it, and shift attitudes in what can be a toxic culture of victim blaming and shaming.”

This new lawsuit adds to a growing list of accusations against Pierce. At least five other individuals have publicly accused him of similar misconduct, according to a Rolling Stone report published in 2024. Poff’s allegations closely mirror those of other alleged victims. Vagnini also revealed to Out that he has been in contact with another individual from Texas who claims to have an “almost strikingly identical” experience.

The lawsuit alleges that these earlier cases encouraged Poff to come forward with his own story.

“I am coming forward because I have the ability and resources to do so, knowing many other victims cannot,” Poff said. “I refuse to let stereotypes be used as an excuse for predatory behavior.”

Poff also highlighted his support for legal protections such as the New York City Gender Motivated Violence Law, which he says enabled him to file the lawsuit when he was strong enough to do so. He added, “I will not be deterred by the Defendant’s popularity or potential backlash.”

Poff, whose adult film stage name is Dakota Payne, is originally from Waxahachie, Texas. He had previously spoken out about his experience via an Instagram post in September 2024. In the post, he recalled confronting Pierce at a West Hollywood bar, where Pierce allegedly responded, “I’m sorry you feel that way.” In a follow-up video, Poff addressed Pierce directly, criticizing the drag entertainer for allegedly jeopardizing the safety of spaces they shared.

Pierce, through his lawyer, has denied all allegations of nonconsensual sex. His attorney, Andrew Brettler, previously stated that the allegations are “false and unsupported by any evidence of reliable witness testimony.” Four prior cases against Pierce have been settled, and one lawsuit was dismissed.

In December 2024, Pierce attended Out’s annual Out100 event as the guest of another invitee, where he was photographed alongside honorees Cynthia Erivo and Sheryl Lee Ralph.

  • Cooper Koch Responds to District Attorney Hochman’s Opposition to Menendez Brothers’ New Trial

Cooper Koch Responds to District Attorney Hochman’s Opposition to Menendez Brothers’ New Trial

Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman has publicly opposed granting the Menendez Brothers a new trial, a position that has drawn criticism from actor Cooper Koch, who portrayed Erik Menendez in the Netflix series Monsters.

The case revolves around Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were convicted in 1996 of murdering their parents, José and Mary Menendez. The brothers have long maintained that they killed their parents in self-defense after enduring years of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. In 2022, former District Attorney George Gascon recommended that the brothers be re-sentenced, which could have resulted in their release on parole. This recommendation came after new evidence surfaced, including letters that allegedly supported the brothers’ claims of abuse.

However, Hochman, who was elected as District Attorney in 2024, dismissed the notion of a new trial for the Menendez brothers. In a press conference held Friday, Hochman questioned the credibility of new evidence presented in their case, specifically a letter from Erik Menendez to a man named Andy Cano, dated 1988. Hochman cast doubt on the authenticity of the letter and its relevance to the case.

“We looked again at the credibility of the letters, particularly this Andy Cano 1988 supposed letter,” Hochman said. “It calls into drastic question whether this is in fact a 1988 letter written by Erik Menendez to Andy Cano about this sexual abuse.” Hochman also stated that even if the letter were valid, it was not presented during the original trial and came too late to be considered in the current proceedings. “The delay in bringing this motion from at least 2015 to 2023 is substantial,” he added, referring to the brothers’ request for a re-sentencing.

Hochman emphasized that, based on the legal grounds, the court should deny the Menendez brothers’ current habeas petition. He also noted that if the court disagreed, it could issue an “order to show cause,” which would involve further legal proceedings.

Cooper Koch, who played Erik Menendez in Monsters, a role that dramatized the brothers’ lives and the complex circumstances surrounding the murders, responded to Hochman’s stance in a statement. In a message shared via his brother Payton Koch’s Instagram Story, Cooper expressed his disapproval of Hochman’s position.

“I am deeply troubled by the statement made today by District Attorney Nathan Hochman,” Cooper Koch said in a statement released on his brother, Payton Koch’s Instagram story. “It is still my firm belief that the Menendez brothers did not receive a fair second trial and all of the evidence that supported their claims of sexual, psychological, physical, and emotional abuse at the hands of their mother and father were not considered.”

Koch, who has become a vocal advocate for the Menendez brothers’ case, further expressed his belief in the brothers’ innocence and the need for justice. “I remain hopeful that there is still a path forward that will lead to their freedom, so I encourage all of their supporters to keep their voices strong,” he added.

The Menendez brothers were convicted of first-degree murder for killing their parents in Beverly Hills in 1989. Their case garnered widespread media attention, with many questioning whether their actions were the result of a lifetime of abuse. After serving over 30 years in prison, the brothers have continued to fight for their freedom, with renewed support from activists, legal experts, and the entertainment industry.

As the debate over their case continues, the Menendez brothers’ future remains uncertain. Hochman’s decision to reject their request for a new trial adds another chapter to one of California’s most infamous criminal cases. Fans and advocates like Koch continue to rally behind the brothers, hoping for a chance at justice and potential release.

  • Survey Finds 9.3% of U.S. Adults Identify as LGBTQ+ These Days

Survey Finds 9.3% of U.S. Adults Identify as LGBTQ+ These Days

A new report from Gallup reveals that 9.3% of U.S. adults now identify as LGBTQ+, marking a significant increase, particularly among younger generations and bisexual women.

The Gallup survey, conducted via telephone with 14,000 participants in 2024, shows a rise in the number of people identifying as LGBTQ+ across the United States. The report highlights key demographic shifts, with nearly one in four adults between the ages of 18 and 27 identifying as LGBTQ+. The trend is especially noticeable among Gen Z women, with 31% identifying as LGBTQ+, compared to 12% of Gen Z men.

Among those who identify as LGBTQ+, half of them—50%—are bisexual. Women are nearly twice as likely as men to identify as LGBTQ+, according to the data.

The report also delves into the transgender population, including nonbinary and genderqueer individuals. Approximately 1.3% of respondents identified as transgender, a sharp increase from 0.6% in 2020. Gallup’s findings indicate that 4.1% of Gen Z adults identify as transgender, compared to 1.7% of millennials and less than 1% in older generations.

Political affiliation also plays a role in LGBTQ+ identification, with 21% of liberals identifying as LGBTQ+, in contrast to just 3% of conservatives.

However, Gallup notes that the actual number of LGBTQ+ individuals may be higher, as some respondents may have felt uncomfortable disclosing their identity during a telephone survey. About 5% of respondents chose not to answer the question at all.

LGBTQ+ advocates express concern that political shifts could impact the numbers in future surveys. Dr. Mitchell R. Lunn, co-director of a Stanford LGBTQ+ health study, voiced concern that a decrease in social acceptance, particularly under the Trump administration, could lead some individuals to conceal their identities again. “I worry that it will push some people to go back into the closet,” Lunn said, emphasizing the potential setback in progress for the LGBTQ+ community.
