Demi Lovato opened up about their journey as a nonbinary person and why they chose to identify as she/her and they/them: “I just got tired.”
The Grammy-nominated artist came out as nonbinary in 2021 and said they prefer to use they/them pronouns during an episode of their podcast, “4D With Demi Lovato.β
βOver the past year-and-a-half Iβve been doing some healing and some reflective work, and through this work Iβve had the revelation that I identify as non-binary,β Lovato said.
βWith that said, Iβll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them,β they continued. βI feel this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering.β
The Truth behind Their Pronouns Update
However, one year later, Lovato quietly updated their pronouns in their Instagram bio to she/her and they/them. The singer later spoke on the “Spout” podcast about the change.
βRecently, Iβve been feeling more feminine, and so Iβve adopted βshe/herβ again,β they said at the time. But in a recent interview with GQ Hype Spain, Lovato said the change also had to do with the exhaustion they felt from constantly having to explain their gender identity to people around them.
βI constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns,β Lovato revealed. βIt was absolutely exhausting. I just got tired. But for that very reason, I know that it is important to continue spreading the word.β

Later in the interview, the “29” singer said the lack of gender neutral spaces began affecting their everyday life.
βFor example, in public toilets,” they continued. “Having to access the womenβs bathroom, even though I donβt completely identify with it.
βOr it also happens when filling out forms, such as government documents or any other where you have to specify your gender. You only have two options, male and female, and I feel like none of that makes sense to me.
βI see myself conditioned to choose a woman because there are no more. I think this has to change. Hopefully with time there will be more options.β
When it comes to pronouns, Lovato acknowledged how difficult it can be when others are learning and adapting, and said they hope people continue to grow and show respect. “I think whatβs important is, like, nobodyβs perfect.”
