Lea Michele Imagines Rachel Berry in 2025 And ‘Glee’ Fans Have Opinions

Lea Michele is putting her own Glee-ful spin on the future.

The Funny Girl star and Glee alum is currently dazzling audiences across the country on her Straight from Carnegie Hall Tour. Alongside Broadway hits, solo originals, and fan-favorite show tunes, Michele is treating fans to a quirky and nostalgic segment: imagining what songs her Glee character Rachel Berry would perform in 2025.

And naturally, the internet has plenty to say about it.

Pop Covers, Broadway Belts, and Berry Vibes

During a performance on Thursday, May 8, in Orlando, Florida, Michele pulled out all the stops. As part of the Rachel Berry “2025 set,” she belted out a lineup of modern pop hits with full theatrical flair. Songs included Miley Cyrus’ empowering anthem “Flowers,” Ariana Grande’s emotional “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love),” and not one, but two Olivia Rodrigo hits: “Vampire” and “Drivers License.”

She also tackled Billie Eilish’s haunting ballad “What Was I Made For?”—a performance that had fans leaning in closer, tissues in hand.

But it was her cover of Chappell Roan’s campy, cult-favorite track “Pink Pony Club” that really got Gleeks talking.

A Pink Debate in the Comment Section

Michele delivered the performance in full Rachel Berry fashion, complete with power notes, dramatic pauses, and signature vocal slides. However, fans on social media quickly chimed in with a bold take: “Pink Pony Club” might be better suited for Kurt Hummel, played by Michele’s former co-star Chris Colfer.

“That would 100% be a Kurt song!!!” one user wrote. Another chimed in, “Sorry, this is for Kurt.”

“I want Chris Colfer to sing it in the OG key ‘cause I know he can,” another fan commented, while one added, “I can only hear Kurt singing this.”

Kurt vs. Rachel: The Duet That Could’ve Been

Some fans didn’t want to choose sides. Instead, they envisioned a “Glee”-style duet featuring Rachel and Kurt, reminiscent of the show’s iconic “Defying Gravity” showdown.

“Rachel and Kurt would have ate down on this in Glee,” one comment read. Another echoed the sentiment: “We need Kurt and Rachel to do a sing-off to this like the Wicked one.”

    Glee Nostalgia Meets Pop Fantasy

While Michele’s tour is clearly a celebration of her solo artistry, it’s also a heartfelt wink to her Glee roots—one that’s resonating with longtime fans. Whether you think “Pink Pony Club” belongs to Rachel, Kurt, or both, one thing’s for sure: the Glee spirit is alive and well in 2025—and still sparking debates online.

Stay tuned. Knowing this fandom, the next duet fantasy might already be in the works

‘Las Culturistas’ Culture Awards to Air on Bravo and Peacock This August Celebrating Pop Culture’s Most Iconic and Outrageous Moments

Get ready to scream “Culture!” from the rooftops. The Las Culturistas Culture Awards, hosted by podcast royalty Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, are headed to television for the first time—airing Tuesday, Aug. 5 on Bravo and streaming the next day on Peacock.

A Cultural Phenomenon Takes the Stage

Originally born from their beloved podcast Las Culturistas, Yang and Rogers’ awards show has become a celebration of pop culture’s most iconic, bizarre, and unforgettable moments. The show, now in its fourth year, isn’t just a niche fan favorite—it’s a full-blown cultural event.

Taped live in Los Angeles on July 17 and produced by Lionsgate Alternative Television, the 2025 ceremony promises over 100 gloriously absurd and oddly specific categories, live musical performances, and a star-studded lineup of presenters and guests. A full list of this year’s categories is still under wraps—but fans can expect the same witty chaos that’s made the podcast a cult hit since its 2016 debut.

Big Names, Big Laughs, Big Culture

In a joint statement, Rogers and Yang poked fun at the lofty definition of culture while perfectly capturing the show’s self-aware spirit:

“The word ‘culture’ is defined as ‘the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively,’” they said. “We are so thrilled to eliminate that whole ‘intellectual’ part entirely with the LCCAs airing on Bravo and Peacock this August… Because while what the world needs now might be love sweet love, it also needs to see an Oscar-winning actress and a Real Housewife come together to present a very heavy award to Oprah, if we can book her. Oprah, u up?!”

From Podcast to Pop Culture Powerhouse

Las Culturistas, known for its hilarious and high-low takes on everything from Tony Awards to TikTok trends, has featured guests like Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Ariana Grande. With its rapid-fire segments, unfiltered opinions, and endless quotables, the podcast has redefined how queer voices celebrate pop culture—and now it’s bringing that chaotic joy to a wider TV audience.

NBCUniversal’s EVP of live events and specials, Jen Neal, called the awards show “vibrant and whimsical,” adding, “Matt and Bowen’s undeniable chemistry, playful humor and love of pop culture’s big and small moments have shaped this spirited award show, redefining what it means to celebrate culture.”

The Las Culturistas Culture Awards will air on Bravo on Tuesday, Aug. 5, and stream on Peacock the following day.

  • Cynthia Erivo to Narrate Wicked Audiobook After Playing Elphaba in the Queerest Fantasy Saga of the Year

Cynthia Erivo to Narrate Wicked Audiobook After Playing Elphaba in the Queerest Fantasy Saga of the Year

Cynthia Erivo isn’t done with Oz just yet. After flying high as Elphaba in the record-breaking Wicked movie, the powerhouse actress and vocal LGBTQ+ advocate is stepping back into character to narrate the official audiobook of Gregory Maguire’s cult-favorite novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Yes, the original queer-coded fantasy that started it all. And yes — she is making us cry again.

The award-winning actress and singer, who plays Elphaba in Universal Pictures’ two-part film adaptation of Wicked, will lend her voice to the upcoming audiobook release of Gregory Maguire’s beloved 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, Variety reported Monday.

Set to release on July 1, the audiobook marks a full-circle moment for Erivo, who has spent the past several years immersed in the world of Oz. The novel, a dark and politically charged reimagining of the classic Wizard of Oz story, serves as the original source material for both the hit Broadway musical and the big-screen films. It tells the story of Elphaba, the misunderstood girl born with emerald-green skin who would eventually become known as the Wicked Witch of the West.

In a statement released with the announcement, Erivo expressed deep personal resonance with the role. “I feel deeply connected to Elphaba. We have been on quite the journey together,” Erivo said. “And now I’m eager to begin an adventure with her whilst exploring the full world of Wicked and its myriad of other characters in the audiobook. I’m looking forward to bringing this incredible story to life in a new way for listeners, and I hope it resonates as deeply with them as I know it will with me.”

    Revisiting the Origins

Gregory Maguire’s Wicked has captivated readers for nearly three decades with its exploration of power, prejudice, and identity. Set in the land of Oz long before Dorothy’s arrival, the novel follows Elphaba from childhood through adulthood as she grapples with being labeled an outcast in a society that fears difference.

The story delves into themes of political unrest, discrimination, and moral complexity, offering a far more nuanced portrait of Oz than audiences remember from the 1939 film. It was this rich, layered material that inspired the acclaimed 2003 Broadway musical starring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth — and later, the two-part cinematic adaptation directed by Jon M. Chu.

Erivo’s return to Maguire’s text as narrator brings added depth to the character she’s already portrayed on screen. Fans of the book and musical alike are expected to welcome this unique opportunity to hear Elphaba’s inner voice interpreted by an actress who has embodied her so completely.

    An Unforgettable Transformation

Erivo’s commitment to the role of Elphaba has been widely praised. During a screening of Wicked on December 12, 2024, the British-born actress revealed the intense physical and emotional preparation required to portray the iconic character.

To prepare for the film’s demanding stunts — including flying scenes that relied on wire work — Erivo began training months in advance, focusing on core strength and endurance. On set, her days often started before dawn.“I had never flown before. I just knew I wanted to,” she said. “And that requires your core to be the strongest you could possibly be, because the wires will take you from one place to another.”

Her mornings would start with rigorous workouts, followed by two hours in the makeup chair to apply the character’s signature green complexion before the crew’s 5 a.m. call time. “No days were small,” Erivo added. “There were no small days. None.”

    A Lasting Impact

Erivo’s physical transformation extended beyond makeup. She made the bold decision to shave her head for the role — a move she described as both freeing and vulnerable.

Speaking at an event earlier this month, she recalled the moment she removed Elphaba’s green paint after filming wrapped and saw her bare scalp. “I felt vulnerable when there was nothing there,” she said. “But I ended up loving it. I felt more in my body, in myself.”

Erivo’s dedication to the role didn’t stop when the cameras did. She and her co-star Ariana Grande, who portrays Glinda, got matching tattoos on their palms featuring the phrase “For Good,” a reference to the emotional duet sung by the characters in the musical. Director Jon M. Chu, who helms both Wicked films, praised the pair for their commitment, calling them “hardcore” for how deeply they connected with their roles and the film’s enduring message.

    A Franchise Built on Legacy

The first installment of the Wicked film, released on November 22, 2024, received widespread acclaim, earning multiple accolades including two Academy Awards and a Golden Globe. The film reimagined the beloved Broadway production with stunning visual effects, elaborate musical numbers, and nuanced performances from its lead cast.

The sequel, Wicked: For Good, is scheduled for release on November 21, 2025. It is expected to explore the latter half of Elphaba and Glinda’s intertwined journeys, concluding the saga that has enchanted fans for decades.

As anticipation builds for the second film, Erivo’s narration of the original novel offers audiences a fresh way to experience the Wicked universe. The audiobook provides new depth and context to Elphaba’s character, voiced by someone who has lived, breathed, and quite literally flown in her shoes.

With this latest project, Erivo continues to redefine what it means to bring a character to life — not just on screen, but through every medium she touches.

  • Sasha Allen’s Bold New EP ‘Jawbreaker’ Is a Love Letter to Life, Music—and Adore Delano

Sasha Allen’s Bold New EP ‘Jawbreaker’ Is a Love Letter to Life, Music—and Adore Delano

Transgender singer-songwriter Sasha Allen has officially released his debut solo EP, Jawbreaker, a project years in the making and filled with personal lyrics, biting wit, and heartfelt moments. The Voice alum—who captured national attention in 2021 as part of the father-son duo Jim and Sasha Allen—emerges in full solo force on this release, with an equally powerful muse by his side: his girlfriend, fellow singer and RuPaul’s Drag Race superstar Adore Delano.

Allen says the title track, “Jawbreaker,” inspired the name of the EP because of the way it captured a pivotal, life-changing moment—meeting Delano in late 2024. “Some of the songs on the EP I wrote many years ago, but this track symbolized something new and blossoming in my life,” he told Out in a recent interview.

“Jawbreaker” is more than just a clever title. As Allen explains, it reflects a duality. The word references a candy that’s hard to chew but sweet once you get through the shell, and it’s also used to describe complex, hard-to-pronounce words—a metaphor that fits perfectly for someone who’s navigated challenges around language, identity, and self-expression.

Born and raised in Newtown, Connecticut, Allen began his medical transition at 16 and has used music as a form of storytelling and healing ever since. His new EP, Jawbreaker, touches on everything from buried trauma to radical acceptance. On the track “Bones,” Allen sings about a future archeological dig where transgender socialists find the remains of people like him—and those who tried to erase their identities.

The EP is both personal and political. “When I Forgive You” stands out as one of the most emotionally rich songs, dedicated to Allen’s 90-year-old Catholic grandmother, Nancy Kennedy, who has shown him unconditional love. The song even includes a real voicemail from her. “If this person, who is so devout in her faith, can accept me just as I am, then there is so much room for more acceptance in the world,” Allen said.

The road to releasing Jawbreaker hasn’t been simple. After his time on The Voice, where he and his father were coached by Ariana Grande, Allen signed with Republic Records—part of the Universal Music Group umbrella. While it seemed like a dream come true, he soon found himself creatively stifled. “I was the smallest fish in the biggest pond,” Allen said. “It became the classic label story: lots of waiting, trying to change me, and not being heard.”

Enter Adore Delano. The two met on November 1, 2024, when Allen sent her a spontaneous DM. “Shoot your shot,” he jokes now. “I just did it, and it worked.” The connection was instant. Delano, a seasoned performer who’s experienced the ups and downs of the music industry herself, immediately saw Allen’s frustration and helped him see a way out. “She was like, ‘They shelved you. You need to get off that label,’” Allen recalled. “She gave me the courage to ask to be dropped.”

Within a week of leaving the label, Allen released “When I Forgive You” as the lead single and began building the rest of Jawbreaker from scratch—with a DIY setup in Delano’s closet. The EP includes two songs inspired directly by their relationship: the title track and “Kick Us Out Again,” which recounts the couple getting kicked out of a West Hollywood club for cuddling in a booth for three hours.

Their romance is more than just a love story—it’s also a partnership built on shared experiences as trans individuals. “I started transitioning when I was 16; she started at 33,” Allen said. “We talk about everything. It’s a really unique bond. We just get each other.”

As for how he made things official? In true romantic fashion, Allen proposed “Love Is Blind” style—getting down on one knee while joking about a broken dishwasher. “Very cheese ball,” he admits. “But she liked it.”

With Jawbreaker, Sasha Allen is not only reclaiming his artistic voice but also redefining what freedom and love look like as a young transgender artist. And as for the message he wants to share with trans youth today? “Do not let them steal your joy. There are people fighting for you, and life gets so much better.”

Sasha Allen’s Jawbreaker EP is now available for streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and Amazon Music. Fans can also purchase official merchandise at SashaAllenMusic.com.

  • Ariana Grande Finally Drops ‘Brighter Days Ahead’ The Deluxe Version of ‘Eternal Sunshine’

Ariana Grande Finally Drops ‘Brighter Days Ahead’ The Deluxe Version of ‘Eternal Sunshine’

Ariana Grande’s latest project, Brighter Days Ahead, serves as a companion to her critically acclaimed 2024 album Eternal Sunshine, delving deeper into the personal and emotional landscapes explored in her previous release. While Eternal Sunshine saw Grande confronting the aftermath of her public divorce, Brighter Days Ahead acts as a reflective continuation, enhancing the themes of recovery, growth, and moving forward.

    A Journey of Emotional Growth

On “Past Life,” the penultimate track of Eternal Sunshine Deluxe: Brighter Days Ahead, Grande sings about the painful but necessary act of moving on from the past. “Might fuck around and elevate my expectations,” she declares. “Now I’m fine to leave you in a past life.” This statement encapsulates the overarching theme of the album, as Grande shifts from the sorrow of her previous relationship to an empowered stance, ready to embrace the future.

Grande has always been known for her vulnerability and candidness, and Eternal Sunshine showcased her ability to weave personal pain into her music. The album’s exploration of her divorce and the emotional turbulence that followed resonated deeply with listeners. It was an album about letting go of past hurts and the promise of new love, heavily inspired by Michel Gondry’s 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The film’s protagonists, who seek to erase their painful memories of love, serve as a metaphor for Grande’s journey through heartbreak and healing.

Brighter Days Ahead: A Natural Extension

Rather than radically depart from the sounds and themes of Eternal Sunshine, Brighter Days Ahead extends the emotional narrative, offering an opportunity for closure and reflection. The six new tracks (including a half-song intro) reinforce the emotional resonance of the original album, as Grande continues to grapple with the aftermath of her divorce and the possibility of new beginnings.

    View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Ariana Grande (@arianagrande)

Grande’s approach to music-making has always been rooted in artistry, and Brighter Days Ahead is no exception. The album doesn’t push the boundaries of her previous work but instead serves as a continuation of the journey she began in Eternal Sunshine. It’s an opportunity to say what was left unsaid, to reflect on the pain and the healing that has come since.

    Thematic and Musical Continuity

The project kicks off with “Intro (End of the World) – Extended,” a track that transforms from a celebration of romance into a poignant reflection on heartbreak. Grande sings, “I broke your heart because you broke mine / So me, I am the bad guy ’cause I’d already grieved you and you started to realize / I do need you, I did / I wish I could un-need you, so I did.” This extended version of the intro serves as a more complete expression of the emotional complexities Grande faces. The intro tracks on her albums have always been noteworthy for their ability to capture the essence of the themes to come, and this one is no different.

    New Tracks, New Dimensions

Each of the new songs on Brighter Days Ahead serves to expand the universe of Eternal Sunshine. The tracks are introspective, delving into different textures of romance, emotional growth, and reflection. The ’80s-inspired “Twilight Zone” explores disbelief and the surreal quality of her marriage, with its title referencing the cult-classic TV show she loves. The song’s retro vibe underscores a feeling of disconnection, as Grande contemplates the idea that the marriage may never have truly been real.

    View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Ariana Grande (@arianagrande)

Another standout is “Warm,” where Grande’s lyrics reveal a yearning for emotional support: “Can you hold the space I require or will you turn the page?” The song underscores the struggle of finding solace and understanding after a period of emotional turmoil. Meanwhile, “Hampstead” draws inspiration from the London neighborhood where Grande lived while filming Wicked, offering a simple yet emotionally rich ballad that showcases the evolution of her vocal technique over the years.

    Grande’s Artistic Evolution

While the emotional depth of Brighter Days Ahead is certainly a key part of its success, the musicianship is equally impressive. Grande, who has always been a technically skilled vocalist, continues to push the boundaries of her craft. The album’s production values are exceptional, with each song sounding both deliberate and full of life. Her vocal arrangements, particularly on “Hampstead,” are breathtaking, as her voice moves between delicate harmonies and powerful moments with ease.

Grande’s ability to blend personal experiences with universal themes of love, loss, and recovery is what makes Brighter Days Ahead such an effective follow-up to Eternal Sunshine. The album feels like a snapshot of an artist at a crossroads, still processing the complexities of her past while embracing the potential for new growth.

Conclusion: A Reflective and Restorative Continuation

In many ways, Brighter Days Ahead is a cathartic reflection of Ariana Grande’s journey through one of her most public and painful experiences. While Eternal Sunshine laid the groundwork for her exploration of heartbreak and renewal, Brighter Days Ahead is a reminder that healing is a process that doesn’t happen overnight. Through introspection and vulnerability, Grande shows that even at her lowest moments, there is room for growth, reconciliation, and the promise of brighter days ahead.

This continuation not only cements Grande’s place as one of pop music’s most introspective and skilled songwriters but also serves as a testament to her ability to turn personal pain into a source of artistic power.

  • Paul Tazewell Makes History at the 97th Academy Awards as The First Black Man to Win Best Costume Design for ‘Wicked’

Paul Tazewell Makes History at the 97th Academy Awards as The First Black Man to Win Best Costume Design for ‘Wicked’

Paul Tazewell has made history at the 2025 Academy Awards, becoming the first Black man to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design. Tazewell earned the prestigious honor for his work on Wicked, the highly anticipated film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical. The award, presented during the 97th annual Academy Awards on March 2, marks a significant milestone in Tazewell’s career and in the history of the Oscars.

“This is absolutely astounding. Thank you, Academy, for this very significant honor,” Tazewell, 60, said in his acceptance speech. “I’m the first Black man to receive the costume design award for my work on Wicked. I’m so proud of this.”

Tazewell’s win comes just a few years after Ruth E. Carter made history as the first Black person to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design. Carter received the award for her groundbreaking work on Black Panther (2018) and later took home the trophy again for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). Tazewell’s victory signals a continued shift toward greater diversity in Hollywood, following in the footsteps of Carter’s groundbreaking achievements.

This year, Tazewell faced stiff competition in the Best Costume Design category, with other nominees including Arianne Phillips (A Complete Unknown), Janty Yates and David Crossman (Gladiator II), Lisy Christl (Conclave), and Linda Muir (Nosferatu). Despite the strong field, Tazewell’s visionary work on Wicked earned him the win, underscoring his mastery in bringing larger-than-life characters to the screen through wardrobe design.

Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu, is one of the most highly anticipated films in recent years. Tazewell’s costumes are a central element of the film’s visual storytelling, from the iconic green of Elphaba’s (played by Cynthia Erivo) ensemble to the sparkling pinks and blues of Glinda’s (Ariana Grande) outfits. Tazewell’s work is said to involve over 1,000 costume pieces, not only for Wicked but also for its sequel, Wicked: Part Two, which is currently in production. The film’s costumes have already garnered significant attention for their intricate design and their ability to reflect the personalities and journeys of the characters.

Tazewell’s success at the Oscars is not his first major recognition. His work on Wicked has already earned him multiple accolades, including wins at the Critics Choice Awards, the Costume Designers Guild Awards, and the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs). These honors have further cemented his status as one of the leading figures in costume design.

Speaking with KABC earlier in February, Tazewell reflected on the significance of his work being recognized by such esteemed institutions. “It means everything,” he said. “To have that acknowledgment, to have that approval by so many greats in our industry, it just means the world.”

Tazewell’s career has spanned several decades and includes notable work on films like Harriet (2019) and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story (2021). His costumes in Wicked and beyond showcase his ability to blend artistry with storytelling, using fabric and design to convey complex emotions and themes.

“I want to touch hearts, I want to change lives, I want to make a difference,” Tazewell told KABC. “And my power, my medium in doing that, is costume design. I’m passionate about it.” His passion for his craft and his belief in its ability to shape the way audiences engage with a story has driven his success in the field.

Tazewell’s nomination for Best Costume Design at the Oscars came as part of a significant year for Wicked, which earned a total of 10 nominations across multiple categories. These included Best Picture, Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo, and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande. Tazewell’s win further solidifies the film’s position as a major contender this award season.

In a celebratory Instagram post after his BAFTA win, Tazewell expressed his “immense gratitude” for his Wicked team and collaborators. “My deepest thanks also to Jon M. Chu and Marc Platt for turning these cinematic dreams into reality. Thank you for welcoming me into the Wicked family,” Tazewell wrote. He also extended his appreciation to audiences who have embraced the intricate details of the film’s costumes. “Your recognition makes this journey even more rewarding,” he added.

The Oscar win for Tazewell is not only a personal triumph but also a moment of representation for the Black community in Hollywood. His achievement adds to a growing list of Black creatives making history at the Academy Awards, further contributing to the ongoing conversation about diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry.

As Tazewell continues to push the boundaries of costume design, his work on Wicked remains a testament to his dedication to his craft. Whether through the iconic costumes of Glinda and Elphaba or the hundreds of other characters that populate the film, Tazewell’s designs have left an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape. His Oscar win is just one more chapter in a career that has already redefined what it means to use fashion as a tool for storytelling.

Fans and industry peers alike are sure to be watching closely as Tazewell continues to make his mark on Hollywood, with his upcoming work in Wicked: Part Two sure to be as groundbreaking as his Oscar-winning costumes in the first film.

The new album is expected to drop later this year, making “Replay” the first taste of what’s to come. Fans of Erivo’s soaring vocals and emotionally charged performances are eagerly awaiting more music from the multi-talented artist.

As Erivo moves forward in this new musical era, Replay promises to be the anthem that will keep fans hitting “repeat.”

Zedd Says Pop Princess Ariana Grande Has ‘Always Been The Queen’ Following ‘Wicked’ Success: ‘She’s Never Not Had a Moment’

Ariana Grande’s career has been nothing short of iconic. From her start on Broadway to becoming one of the most influential pop stars of her generation, Grande’s journey has been marked by chart-topping hits and an unmatched vocal range. As she continues to shine in her career, her collaboration with DJ and producer Zedd on the 2014 smash hit “Break Free” stands out as a defining moment. This year, the song has gained even more recognition as part of the 10th-anniversary celebration of Grande’s sophomore album My Everything.

Zedd, who worked closely with Grande on the track, recently shared his thoughts on the song’s lasting success and his admiration for the pop star’s work ethic. “In my eyes, she’s always been the queen, and she’s always deserved every bit of shine,” Zedd said in an interview Gayety at the Grammys. “One of the most talented singers that exists. I’m a big fan, and I’m super happy that she’s having another moment.”

A Collaboration That Almost Didn’t Happen

The story behind “Break Free” is one of serendipity and perfect timing. Zedd, known for his skills as a producer and DJ, originally created the track and brought it to his friend, super-producer Max Martin, to write lyrics. The two were excited about the track, but Zedd never anticipated that it would end up as part of Ariana Grande’s catalog.

“It was a song that Max and I were both like, ‘Awesome, we love this song. One day something will happen with it,’” Zedd recalled. “But we never really thought it would happen this way, and especially with Ariana.”

That “one day” came when Max Martin reached out to Zedd to let him know that Ariana Grande was in the studio and interested in recording the track. Zedd was thrilled by the idea, but there was one issue: the vocal recording.

When Zedd heard Ariana’s take on the song, he realized that he had difficulty understanding some of the lyrics, a challenge he attributes to his German background. “I’m German, so I’m not the best at, like, giving advice on English,” Zedd admitted. “But I was like, ‘I have a really hard time making out what the words are saying.’”

A lesser artist might have left it at that, but Ariana Grande was determined to perfect the song. “So she went back and rerecorded everything from scratch, which I feel like most artists wouldn’t do,” Zedd explained. “The fact that she wanted this to be perfect and went back and redid the entire thing speaks for her work ethic and how much of a perfectionist she is.”

This dedication paid off, as “Break Free” became one of the biggest anthems of 2014, reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming a staple in both Zedd’s and Grande’s discographies. Zedd, who continues to perform the song at live shows, credits Grande for the song’s enduring popularity. “Nobody really expected this to become this anthem,” he said. “I still play the song live… it’s just become one of the biggest songs in my sets. And I’m incredibly grateful because it certainly wouldn’t have happened without her. She really drove that thing home.”

A Decade of Success and Recognition

As Ariana Grande celebrated the 10th anniversary of My Everything last year, the song “Break Free” remains one of the most recognizable tracks in her catalog. Over the years, it has been embraced by fans for its empowering lyrics, infectious melody, and Grande’s powerhouse vocals. The song also helped solidify her status as a pop sensation and further proved her versatility as an artist capable of dominating various genres, from R&B to electronic dance music.

The anniversary edition of My Everything, which includes vinyl versions of the album’s singles, has given fans the opportunity to relive the magic of songs like “Problem” and “Love Me Harder” while also celebrating the legacy of “Break Free.” For Grande, it’s yet another moment in a career that has seen her rise to superstardom, but for Zedd, it’s a reminder of the unexpected magic that can come from creative collaboration.

“[Ariana] has always been at the top of her game,” Zedd said. “She’s always had these amazing moments in her career, but it’s cool to see her get even more recognition and appreciation, especially for something as timeless as ‘Break Free.’”

As the years continue to pass, both artists reflect on the lasting impact of their collaboration. While Grande’s star continues to rise in Hollywood, music, and beyond, Zedd remains grateful for the opportunity to have been part of the song that solidified her place in pop music history.

For now, both Ariana Grande and Zedd have no plans to slow down, continuing to shine brightly in their respective careers, with My Everything serving as a reminder of the power of collaboration and the lasting appeal of timeless music.
