  • Queer Love and Emotional Stakes Rise as Ellie and Dina Connect in ‘The Last of Us’

Queer Love and Emotional Stakes Rise as Ellie and Dina Connect in ‘The Last of Us’

Season 2 of The Last of Us has already delivered emotional punches, none more resonant than those in Episode 4. Directed by Loki alum Kate Herron, the episode marks a significant turning point for the HBO series, not only in narrative but in the emotional and relational stakes for its central characters.

Fans are still processing the early loss of Joel (Pedro Pascal), but the story has quickly pivoted to focus on Ellie (Bella Ramsey), Dina (Isabela Merced), and newcomer Isaac Dixon (Jeffrey Wright). This episode forces each character to confront choices that could alter the course of their lives—and in the case of Dina, a surprise pregnancy reveals new emotional territory.

Herron spoke with Out about crafting this deeply personal chapter, which explores queer love, identity, and found family in the midst of a violent and uncertain world. Her direction brings a sense of intimacy and emotional nuance rarely seen in apocalyptic storytelling.

A Story of Survival and Identity

Episode 4 opens with a young soldier forced by Isaac to choose a side. Herron says that moment establishes the tone for the entire episode.

“For me, it was all about grounding the story emotionally,” Herron said. “Whether it’s the military pressure, Ellie and Dina’s romance, or the trauma these characters carry, it was crucial to track the emotional arcs and make the audience feel like they’re right there with them.”

The character of Isaac, introduced for the first time this season, adds thematic weight to the episode. While Herron deferred to series co-creator Craig Mazin on Isaac’s broader role, she emphasized that showing human threats—beyond the infected—was essential.

“In Seattle, people are as dangerous, if not more so, than the infected,” she said. “That sets the stage for what’s coming.”

Queer Love in a Genre Landscape

Known for bringing queer representation into mainstream genre television, Herron believes that science fiction and horror offer unique avenues to explore universal themes.

“The best genre stories make us feel something real,” she said. “Ellie and Dina’s love story is so relatable, even in this fantastical setting.”

One of the most poignant scenes occurs when Ellie plays “Take On Me” on guitar—an act of emotional vulnerability that deepens her connection with Dina. Herron worked closely with Ramsey to explore different shades of shyness and confidence.

Ellie playing ‘Take on Me’ in an emotional scene during Season 2, Episode 4. Photo: HBO

“It’s such a human moment—Ellie playing for someone she cares about,” she said. “And of course, there’s a shadow of Joel in that, too, since he taught her guitar.”

    Trust, Secrets, and Intimacy

Later in the episode, tension builds as Dina learns of Ellie’s bite. At the same time, Dina is grappling with her own secret—her pregnancy with ex-boyfriend Jesse’s child. Herron used pacing and setting to emphasize emotional stakes.

“It was important that the kiss felt earned,” she said. “We don’t give viewers a moment to catch their breath, which mirrors how the characters feel.”

The morning-after conversation between Ellie and Dina stands as one of the episode’s most intimate moments. When Ellie offers to raise the child as a parent figure, Herron said it was vital to present that moment with authenticity.

“It’s a quiet act of radical love,” she explained. “Ellie’s willingness to step into that role shows how deep their bond is. I just wanted the audience to feel like they were witnessing something private and deeply human.”

Reimagining Family in a Harsh World

As queer family structures face increased scrutiny in today’s political climate, Herron believes portraying chosen family onscreen is a powerful form of resistance.

“It’s a grounded conversation that could happen between any two people,” she said. “But because it’s between two queer characters, it challenges what some people think family has to look like.”

Herron credits Mazin and co-creator Neil Druckmann for allowing space to tell that story authentically.

A Future for Ellie and Dina?

Though Herron declined to speculate on where the story is headed, she shared her hope that Ellie and Dina find lasting happiness.

“For one brief moment, they realize the person they love feels the same way,” she said. “That kind of joy is rare in their world—and it’s what makes it so powerful.”

As Herron transitions from Doctor Who and The Last of Us to her next project set in The Sims universe, one theme remains constant in her work: empathy.

“I’m drawn to imperfect characters,” she said. “Storytelling helps us understand people we don’t always agree with—and maybe, along the way, we find a bit more connection.”

The Last of Us airs Sundays on Max.

  • Parker Posey Reveals She ‘Forgot’ Who Dies in The White Lotus Season 3 Finale: ‘It Was So Stressful’

Parker Posey Reveals She ‘Forgot’ Who Dies in The White Lotus Season 3 Finale: ‘It Was So Stressful’

As the highly anticipated season 3 finale of The White Lotus approaches, fans aren’t the only ones eagerly awaiting the dramatic conclusion to the hit HBO series. Cast members, including Parker Posey, who portrays Victoria Ratliff, are also on edge, eager to uncover the fate of their characters. Posey admitted during a recent interview that although she might have known how the season would end at one point, the details have slipped her mind.

“I forgot who died,” Posey shared in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “It was so stressful when I read it. The dark stuff, I blazed through.” While Posey’s character may not be the one meeting an untimely end, she, like the audience, is left in suspense, eagerly awaiting the final moments of the season.

The season 3 finale, which will air on April 6, promises to be another gripping conclusion that will likely keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Fans of The White Lotus know all too well that each season concludes with a shocking death, and creator Mike White has hinted that this finale will be no different.

Posey’s co-star, Patrick Schwarzenegger, who plays her onscreen son Saxon, revealed that he, too, is in the dark about how the season will conclude. “I’m just excited to watch the finale with the rest of the world because I actually have no idea what happens,” Schwarzenegger told The Hollywood Reporter. His excitement to experience the finale alongside viewers underscores the level of secrecy that surrounds the show’s plot twists.

As is typical with The White Lotus, the season 3 finale has been tightly guarded, with spoilers kept to an absolute minimum. Jon Gries, who made a surprising return to the show after possibly being involved in the shocking death of Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya in season 2, teased that viewers will be left shocked. “Whatever you think you know, you’re going to get it wrong,” Gries teased, building anticipation for the highly secretive ending.

Mike White Promises an “Epic” Finale

Creator Mike White has been known for his meticulous attention to detail, particularly when it comes to the finale of each season. White expressed his excitement about the upcoming finale, which will run for an hour and a half. “As a filmmaker, it’s probably the piece of work that I’m like, ‘I can’t believe I did that,’” White said, hinting that the episode will be a major achievement in his career.

White also addressed the inevitable reactions to the finale, acknowledging that viewers will have differing opinions. “People are going to hate Mike White,” said Charlotte Le Bon, who plays Chloe in the new season. She jokingly added that the finale will likely leave fans in emotional turmoil.

White, however, hopes the finale will leave viewers feeling a bittersweet sense of closure. “My hope is that it’ll feel like a cathartic sad or a satisfying sad and not a ‘What the f—?’ sad,” White said. “But people are going to have a million different opinions. You just hope you stick the landing.” Given the history of shocking twists on the show, fans are bracing for an ending that will likely leave them talking long after the credits roll.

    Keeping the Finale Under Wraps

To ensure that the series finale remains a mystery until it airs, The White Lotus team has taken extreme measures to prevent leaks. Executive producer David Bernad explained that the show goes to great lengths to keep the secret of the finale under wraps. “We have fake endings to the scripts,” Bernad said. “So we wrote up — we have six different endings — and we kind of distributed fake endings to people just in case someone leaked anything, and then we could say there’s different fake endings.”

This attention to secrecy extends to the set as well. Bernad explained that when filming the final scenes, the set is “locked down,” and non-production personnel are never allowed access to crucial scenes. This level of security helps to preserve the mystery of the finale and keeps spoilers from reaching the public before the episode airs.

Maria Shriver’s Curiosity About the Finale

The anticipation surrounding the White Lotus season 3 finale is so intense that even those close to the cast are feeling the suspense. Schwarzenegger’s mother, Maria Shriver, took to Instagram on April 3 to address the question she has been asked repeatedly: What will happen to her son Saxon?

“I may be on a book tour promoting my new book, I Am Maria, but everywhere I go everyone keeps asking me about @patrickschwarzenegger, about @thewhitelotus, about what’s going to happen to Saxon, if he’s going to die,” Shriver wrote on Instagram, alongside an edited image of her book cover, which read “I Am Patrick’s Mother” instead of “I Am Maria.”

Shriver humorously noted that, despite being the mother of one of the show’s central characters, she knows just as little as the rest of the world about Saxon’s fate. “I may be Patrick’s mother, but I know NOTHING! No one believes me, but it’s true,” she wrote, inviting fans to speculate on what might happen in the finale before encouraging them to check out her own book.

The humorous post illustrates the level of curiosity that surrounds the fate of The White Lotus characters, even among those closest to the cast.

The White Lotus Finale Is Almost Here

As the clock ticks down to the highly anticipated White Lotus season 3 finale, both the cast and the fans are on edge, eagerly awaiting the revelations that will come with it. With promises of shocking twists, emotional farewells, and possibly another shocking death, the finale is set to be one for the ages.

The season 3 finale of The White Lotus will air on Sunday, April 6, at 9 p.m. ET on Max. Fans can expect the unexpected as the series continues its tradition of exploring the darker side of luxury, human relationships, and the secrets that lie beneath the surface of the idyllic locations where the show is set.

As viewers prepare for the final moments of the season, the cast and crew are just as eager to see how the story concludes, with many of them admitting they are just as much in the dark as the audience. One thing is for certain: when The White Lotus wraps up on April 6, it’s sure to leave fans talking long after the credits roll.

  • Max Cancels ‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ After Three Seasons, but a New Home Could Be on the Horizon

Max Cancels ‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ After Three Seasons, but a New Home Could Be on the Horizon

The Sex Lives of College Girls, the beloved ensemble comedy co-created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, is officially closing its doors at Max after three seasons. However, all hope is not lost for the show, as its producing studio, Warner Bros. Television, is reportedly seeking ways to revive the series elsewhere. The most talked-about potential home for the show is Netflix, a platform where Kaling has a longstanding relationship. However, the complexities of transferring a series between streaming services, especially one with such a devoted fanbase, make it a challenging, though not impossible, prospect. A representative for Warner Bros. Television declined to comment on the matter.

A Bumpy Ride for The Sex Lives of College Girls‘ Third Season

It’s been nearly two months since the third season of The Sex Lives of College Girls wrapped its run on Max, but fans are still reeling from the cancellation. While the decision to cancel the show did not come as a complete surprise, particularly after Season 3 failed to match the critical reception and viewership of the first two seasons, it remains a bittersweet end for a series that built a loyal following. Many believe that the departure of original cast member Reneé Rapp partway through the season may have had an impact on the show’s dynamic, with some fans and critics feeling that the chemistry of the ensemble was never quite the same without her.

Ratings are believed to be a key factor in Max’s decision to cancel the show. Despite having a strong core audience, the third season’s viewership numbers were not as robust as the first two seasons, contributing to the streaming service’s reluctance to renew it. The show’s cancellation marks another high-profile loss for Max, which has been scaling back on its original content amid shifting business strategies.

Warner Bros. Television Explores Other Options for the Show

Even though The Sex Lives of College Girls has been canceled at Max, Warner Bros. Television has not given up on the possibility of continuing the series. In the wake of the cancellation, the studio has reportedly started reaching out to other streaming platforms in an attempt to find a new home for the show. Among the top contenders is Netflix, where Kaling has already found success with two hit series, Never Have I Ever and Running Point. However, a potential move to Netflix is far from straightforward.

Relocating a show from one streaming service to another is a rare and often difficult process. One notable example of a successful transition was Girls5eva, which moved from Peacock to Netflix after two seasons. Warner Bros. Television also managed to migrate Dead Boy Detectives from Max to Netflix before the show had even premiered. But for every success story, there are also cautionary tales. A separate Warner Bros. series has reportedly been attempting to make the same move to Netflix in recent weeks, but so far, it has not been successful.

In the case of The Sex Lives of College Girls, the process of moving to another platform is further complicated by the tangled international rights for the series. When the show first premiered in 2021, Max (then known as HBO Max) was expanding its international reach, which meant the series’ global distribution rights were divided among various distributors across different territories. Securing the rights to the show’s existing three seasons would likely involve a complex negotiation between Max and other international distributors, a challenge that could make the transition to a new platform more difficult.

Max’s Cooperation Could Open a Path for a Move

On a more optimistic note, Max has been more flexible with its canceled shows in the past. For example, Minx, a Lionsgate TV-produced show that was canceled by Max, found a new home at Starz, with the show’s entire library moving over as part of the deal. In contrast, Netflix has been less open to allowing its canceled shows to migrate, making Max’s willingness to collaborate a potentially key factor in The Sex Lives of College Girls finding a second life.

While negotiations are still in the early stages, the possibility of the show continuing on another platform is a tantalizing one for its dedicated fanbase, who have been vocal in their support of the show on social media.

The Show’s Legacy and Future Prospects

The Sex Lives of College Girls is more than just a comedy series; it’s a cultural touchstone for a generation of young adults navigating the complexities of college life, friendships, and relationships. The ensemble cast, which includes Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, Alyah Chanelle Scott, Christopher Meyer, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, and Renika Williams, has been widely praised for its chemistry and strong performances. Season 3 also introduced new series regulars Gracie Lawrence and Mia Rodgers, further expanding the show’s dynamic.

Although Season 3 was not able to match the earlier seasons in terms of viewership and critical acclaim, it still provided a satisfying conclusion to some ongoing storylines, leaving many fans eager to see what happens next for the characters. The show’s exploration of themes like identity, love, and personal growth resonated with viewers, ensuring its place in the hearts of many.

For now, the future of The Sex Lives of College Girls remains uncertain, but with Warner Bros. Television actively searching for a new platform and Netflix potentially in the mix, there’s still hope that this beloved series may continue to entertain audiences for years to come.

Max’s Remaining Original Comedies and Future Plans

While The Sex Lives of College Girls may be ending its run, Max still has a number of original comedies in its arsenal. Emmy-winning series Hacks is set to return for a fourth season, while And Just Like That…—the Sex and the City reboot—has been renewed for a third season. Additionally, Peacemaker, the DC Comics-based show starring John Cena, is returning for its sophomore season.

For now, fans of The Sex Lives of College Girls will have to wait and see if the series will find a new home. Until then, they can take comfort in the fact that the show’s legacy remains strong, and there’s always a chance it will return to their screens in the future.

  • HBO’s ‘The Parenting’ Blends Queer Romance, Family Tension, and Demonic Chaos

HBO’s ‘The Parenting’ Blends Queer Romance, Family Tension, and Demonic Chaos

HBO Max’s new horror-comedy, “The Parenting,” delves into the fraught dynamics of introducing partners to parents, amplifying the anxiety with a 400-year-old demon. The film, now streaming, features a gay couple, Rohan (Nik Dodani) and Josh (Brandon Flynn), navigating a weekend getaway with their respective families, a scenario ripe for both humor and horror.

The premise, conceived by writer Kent Sublette, draws inspiration from his own experiences. “It’s loosely based on a trip that my husband and I took with our parents when we first started dating,” Sublette told PRIDE. The film amplifies the inherent stress of such encounters by placing the families in a remote cabin, unbeknownst to them, inhabited by a malevolent entity.

“The Parenting” explores universal themes of family dynamics and acceptance, framed within a queer narrative. Dodani, known for his roles in “Dear Evan Hansen” and “Atypical,” resonated with his character’s anxiety over blending his family with Josh’s. “Meeting your partner’s parents is truly one of the most terrifying things in the world, no matter who you are, whether you’re gay or straight or anything in between,” Dodani said. He highlighted the film’s exploration of “the way we turn into teenage versions of ourselves around our parents, or the desperate need for everything to go perfectly.”

Flynn, of “13 Reasons Why” fame, portrays Josh as a laid-back, unfiltered individual, drawing from his own personality. “I’m just a crass kid from Miami who says whatever, and has no filter,” Flynn shared. He found parallels between his own experiences and Josh’s tendency to speak without thinking, contributing to the film’s comedic tension.

The star-studded cast features Edie Falco and Brian Cox as Rohan’s parents, and Lisa Kudrow and Dean Norris as Josh’s. Vivian Bang joins the ensemble as Sara, the couple’s chosen family member who inserts herself into the weekend. Bang emphasized the importance of chosen families, stating, “Your chosen family are just as pivotal and essential, as your family.” Her character serves as a comedic foil and a source of support for the couple, reflecting the importance of strong friendships.

Norris, known for his role in “Breaking Bad,” portrays Josh’s father, Cliff, with a focus on unconditional acceptance. “He’s very ham-handed, he doesn’t have a filter, he talks a little too much, but the most important thing for me, for that character, was that he [does] love his son [and is] unconditionally and completely accepting of him,” Norris stated. He hopes his portrayal resonates with parents of queer children, highlighting the importance of unwavering support.

While “The Parenting” features comedic elements, including explicit humor, it also delivers heartfelt moments of family connection. The film’s exploration of acceptance and understanding resonates with contemporary audiences, reflecting a growing demand for diverse representation in entertainment.

The film’s blend of horror and comedy provides a unique backdrop for exploring relationship dynamics. The presence of the demon serves as a metaphor for the anxieties and challenges inherent in navigating family relationships. The film’s narrative underscores the importance of communication and acceptance, even in the face of supernatural chaos.

“The Parenting” offers a fresh perspective on the familiar trope of meeting the parents, infusing it with humor, horror, and heartfelt moments. The film’s diverse cast and inclusive storytelling contribute to a broader conversation about representation and acceptance in media. The streaming release of “The Parenting” is expected to generate discussion and resonate with audiences seeking a blend of comedy, horror, and relatable family dynamics.

In a tense moment, Deborah and Ava are seen leaving a conference room after a heated exchange. “Well, aren’t you a big brave girl?” Deborah sneers at Ava, to which Ava responds with a quick-witted comeback, “I guess I am. It’s for the best.” Deborah stares Ava down, her voice calm but pointed as she responds, “We’ll see.”

As their late-night project inches closer to reality, both Deborah and Ava must confront their own personal and professional challenges, all while trying to outsmart the industry’s many obstacles.

The fourth season of Hacks promises to build on the sharp wit, humor, and tension that have made the show a fan favorite since its debut. Potential Gay Scenes and Incest? What’s Going On With ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3?

The White Lotus is back with a shocking season three that has many wondering how much of a gay storyline viewers will be getting this time around.

Looking at the cast for this new installation for the franchise on HBO, cast members Carrie Coon and Aimee Lou Wood grace the screens alongside others like Natasha Rothwell as Belinda back for another stay at the infamous resort chain.

As far as other members of the cast, many are focused in on none other than Saxon played by Patrick Schwarzenegger and Lochlan played by Sam Nivola.

The two brothers, one of the many dysfunctional groups staying at the hotel, are rich, with the older one with a bit of an arrogant attitude.

Trying to impress his younger brother Lochlan by showing him how to flirt to even teaching him how to embrace his manhood, viewers get a glimpse on how far this character is willing to go to assert his dominance.

While initially going to share a room with his sister, Saxon declares that they should instead share a room together as the boys of the family.

Later in the episode while the two are getting ready for bed in their room, Saxon can be seen shirtless proclaiming to his brother on how to get what he wants in life. From there after a brief pause, Saxon grabs a tablet and ponders on how he will be jerking off in the room next to his younger brother.

After the awkward and long, dramatic pause while the two look at each other, fans sensed the sexual tension between the two brothers.

Fans are in shock over the sexual tension in the scene and people are now assuming that there will be an incest storyline between Saxon and Lochlan. One person tweeted: “Please tell me there’s not an incest storyline.” Another wrote: “what the hell is happening with these brothers on the white lotus.”

However, others praised the TV show for exploring uncomfortable themes. A fan tweeted: “White Lotus season 3 starting with gay incest, bitter middle aged white women and British people oh I’m LIVING.”

Patrick Schwarzenegger, who plays Saxon, has teased that things get even more “uncomfortable” and Sam Nivola, who plays Lochlan, has confirmed that he has a nude scene.

Speaking at The White Lotus press conference, Patrick said: “There are some uncomfortable conversations between us in the bed that are a little weird to show in front of your family. Episodes 5 and 6, there will be some times that I take some bathroom breaks from the family, or maybe I won’t watch that episode.”

Meanwhile, Sam spoke about his first nude scene and on screen kiss. He said: “Of course, that comes along with a lot of fear and anxiety [but] there’s a few people that I would trust more with footage of my buttocks [than creator Mike White]. He made us feel so comfortable.”

It’s not clear how far the series will be pushing not only the gay agenda this season, but we will see how family dynamics play out.
