  • You Heard That Right, a Rare ‘Glory Hole’ at Lake Berryessa is Visible Once Again for The First Time in Six Years

You Heard That Right, a Rare ‘Glory Hole’ at Lake Berryessa is Visible Once Again for The First Time in Six Years

For the first time since 2019, the massive “glory hole” at Lake Berryessa in Napa County is once again visible, as heavy winter rains have pushed the lake’s water level above 440 feet. This rare phenomenon, known as spillover, is the result of the Morning Glory spillway—an enormous, 72-foot-wide circular drain—that allows excess water to flow 200 feet downward into Putah Creek, preventing the lake from flooding.

The spectacle occurs when the lake’s water level rises high enough, typically only during the wettest periods. This year, the heavy rains throughout winter have led to spillover, bringing the glory hole back into public view. The event has become a major attraction, drawing crowds of curious onlookers eager to witness the rare sight.

What Is the Morning Glory Spillway?

The Morning Glory spillway, also known locally as the “glory hole,” is an enormous concrete drain built to manage overflow from Lake Berryessa. When the lake’s water level exceeds the spillway threshold, which is 440 feet, water flows into the massive drain and cascades into Putah Creek below, preventing the lake from spilling over its banks. This process, called spillover, makes the lake appear to have a giant hole in its center, with water rushing into the mouth of the drain. The effect is similar to a giant flower, earning the official name of “Morning Glory” due to its resemblance to the flower’s shape.

While the structure is intended to manage water flow, it has also captured the fascination of locals and visitors alike. The phenomenon has been a source of local lore since the 1960s when residents first began referring to it as the “glory hole.” Seeing it in action, however, is rare. Lake Berryessa’s water level typically stays below the spillway threshold, and the enormous drain remains largely out of sight.

    A Rare Event Draws Tourists

As of February 4, 2025, after torrential rains from an atmospheric river storm caused the lake’s water level to surpass the spillway’s 440-foot mark, the glory hole began to spill over. This event has lasted for more than 40 days, a rarity in the history of the spillway. As of the most recent reports, the water level at Lake Berryessa remained six inches above the spillway level. However, local experts anticipate that it will likely fall below the threshold in the coming days, possibly ending the spillover event.

Chris Lee, general manager of the Solano County Water Agency, told the San Francisco Chronicle that while the spillover could end soon, there is still a possibility of further rainfall causing the water level to rise again. “If we get significant runoff, we could see it last beyond next week,” Lee said. This unpredictability has only added to the excitement for those eager to witness the event.

The spillover also serves as a reminder of the region’s complex water management system. Lake Berryessa provides crucial irrigation for local farms and drinking water for approximately 500,000 people. When the glory hole activates, the resulting flow is carefully managed to protect the lake’s surrounding infrastructure and ensure safe water levels.

Design and Safety Features of the Glory Hole

Constructed between 1953 and 1957, the glory hole is part of the Monticello Dam, which impounds Putah Creek to create Lake Berryessa. The design of the spillway was carefully crafted to create a smooth, laminar flow of water, which helps prevent the formation of a dangerous whirlpool. Without this design, the force of the water could potentially cause boats or even swimmers to be sucked into the drain.

Though the spillway is designed to prevent such accidents, the danger is real. The most notable incident occurred in 1997, when a woman tragically drowned after being pulled into the drain. Authorities said the woman had been swimming near the spillway when she disappeared, and her body was later found after she had struggled to cling to the hole’s edge. This remains the only known fatality associated with the Morning Glory spillway.

To keep the public safe, authorities have placed a line of buoys around the spillway to prevent boaters and swimmers from getting too close. The area has also become a popular spot for tourists, who gather at a designated viewing area along Highway 128 to watch the spectacle from a safe distance.

Spillover Events Are Rare But Memorable

Spillover events are infrequent but can last for extended periods when the lake’s water level stays high. The last prolonged spillover occurred in 2017 when water began pouring into the glory hole in February and continued through May. These events tend to attract tourists from across the state, especially during the height of spillover when the lake is at its most dramatic.

As the spillover continues, many are taking advantage of the opportunity to see this rare phenomenon in person. Chris Lee described the sight as “definitely worth seeing,” noting the thrill of witnessing the power of nature as the lake’s water cascades into the massive concrete drain.

While the glory hole may not be a common sight, the spillover serves as an important reminder of the role that water infrastructure plays in managing the region’s water resources. The Morning Glory spillway has stood the test of time, offering both a safety mechanism for flood prevention and a source of fascination for those fortunate enough to witness its rare display.

What’s Next for the Glory Hole?

As the atmospheric conditions in the region begin to stabilize, the spillover event at Lake Berryessa is expected to subside. However, experts will continue to monitor the water levels closely, and there may be more opportunities to witness the glory hole in action later this year. For now, locals and tourists alike are taking advantage of the rare chance to see one of California’s most fascinating natural attractions.

For more information about Lake Berryessa and the Morning Glory spillway, as well as updates on water levels and spillover events, visitors can consult the Solano County Water Agency or stay tuned to local weather reports.

Gay MAGA Influencer Dies After Series of Accidents, Legal Woes, and Shocking Revelations

Influencer and social media personality Bruno, known for his popular Garrett Travels account with 61,000 followers, has passed away following a series of accidents and legal challenges.

The 33-year-old influencer was involved in a serious crash earlier this year, but only days after his release from the hospital, he suffered a second accident while riding a scooter. On October 19, just nine days after the initial crash, Bruno was photographed by DailyMail.com outside his West Hollywood home, appearing to snort a substance in broad daylight. He later claimed the powder was prescription ketamine in a post on his Instagram account.

Less than a week later, on October 25, Bruno fell off his scooter and sustained a severe head injury, cracking his skull. The influencer was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, where he was placed in a coma. His condition was critical, and it was unclear whether he would survive the injury.

Bruno’s troubles did not end with his medical crisis. On November 15, deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office raided his West Hollywood home in connection with the murder of a man named Abouab. They were unable to arrest Bruno due to his hospitalization, though the investigation continued.

Bruno regained consciousness in late December 2024, after spending several weeks in a coma. He was transferred to an LA jail to face charges related to the murder investigation. However, by January 2025, Bruno had been released on bail while awaiting trial.

Tragically, just before his trial was set to begin, Bruno died. According to reports, he had flown to Florida to be with his family at the time of his death. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

Bruno’s life took a surprising turn in 2024 when he publicly revealed his support for the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement. His announcement shocked many, particularly within the LGBT community in West Hollywood, where he had been known for his advocacy on various social issues.

His unexpected death has left the social media community stunned, with many fans and followers paying tribute to him online. Despite his controversial public persona and the tumultuous events leading up to his passing, Bruno remains a figure remembered for his influence on social media and his impact on the LGBTQ+ community.

An official investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is ongoing.

Among the casualties is The Ruby Fruit, a beloved lesbian bar in the Silver Lake neighborhood that had served as a vital gathering spot for the LGBTQ+ community.

On Sunday, the bar’s owners, Emily Bielagus and Mara Herbkersman, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram that The Ruby Fruit would be closing its doors due to the financial strain caused by the ongoing disaster. “We have come to the heartbreaking decision that at this time, operating The Ruby Fruit is no longer possible due to financial impact from the current natural disaster,” the post read.

A Rare Sanctuary for LGBTQ+ Women

Opened in 2023, The Ruby Fruit was a rare addition to the shrinking number of lesbian bars across the United States. Located in a small strip mall on Sunset Boulevard, the bar became a vital hub for LGBTQ+ women in Los Angeles. At the time of its opening, it was the only bar dedicated to lesbian women in the city, a distinction that was later shared by Honey’s at Star Love in East Hollywood.

In a country where lesbian bars have become increasingly rare, the closure of The Ruby Fruit marks a significant loss for the LGBTQ+ community. According to The Lesbian Bar Project, the number of lesbian bars in the U.S. dropped from over 200 in 1980 to just 24 by 2021. Despite these challenges, a small resurgence in recent years had breathed new life into establishments like The Ruby Fruit, which quickly garnered a loyal following.

The bar’s name was inspired by Rita Mae Brown’s 1973 novel Rubyfruit Jungle, a groundbreaking coming-of-age story about a lesbian woman’s journey to self-acceptance. For co-owners Bielagus and Herbkersman, the name was a tribute to the book’s legacy and its role in queer literary history.

    A Space for Community

Though only 500 square feet, The Ruby Fruit had an outsized impact on the local LGBTQ+ scene. The bar’s intimate setting allowed it to function not only as a bar but also as a community space where queer individuals could feel seen and supported. In an interview with Condé Nast Traveler, Herbkersman described how the space evolved beyond a restaurant, becoming a hub for connection and inclusion.

“After we opened The Ruby Fruit, we quickly learned that we had to function as not just a restaurant but a community space,” Herbkersman said. “The queer community is full of diversity and nuance. We want to create a little bit of space for everyone to feel at home.”

The bar hosted a variety of regular programming, including TRANScendent Tuesdays, a gender-expansive mixer, and other popular events like Queereoke and Verse4Verse Poetry, a queer open mic night. These events brought together a diverse range of people from across the LGBTQ+ spectrum, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support. On many nights, the bar’s small space would overflow into the parking lot, a testament to its popularity and the strong sense of community it had cultivated.

    Wildfires Devastate Los Angeles

The ongoing wildfires have affected many businesses and residents across Los Angeles, but the impact on The Ruby Fruit was particularly devastating. Bielagus and Herbkersman explained that the financial realities of operating the business in the aftermath of the fires made it impossible to continue.

“The hospitality industry functions on a day-by-day basis and right now, as they say — the math just isn’t mathing,” the co-owners wrote in their farewell post.

Despite the bar’s closure, Bielagus and Herbkersman are still using the space to give back to the community. They have transformed The Ruby Fruit into a donation drop-off and distribution center for victims of the wildfires. “Even as we write this, we have folks filling their cars and driving supplies to area shelters and resource centers,” the post continued. “Please keep an eye on this Instagram account for more information regarding that.”

In the wake of the closure, both owners expressed their gratitude for the support they received over the past two years. “There isn’t much more to say beyond: we love you, LA. We love you, queer fam. We are grateful for the support you’ve shown us,” they wrote. “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”

A Loss for the Queer Community

The loss of The Ruby Fruit is a particularly painful blow to the LGBTQ+ community in Los Angeles, a city that has long been seen as a haven for queer individuals seeking support and acceptance. The bar’s closure highlights the broader struggles faced by many small businesses in the hospitality industry, especially those serving marginalized communities.

For many, The Ruby Fruit was more than just a place to grab a drink; it was a safe haven where queer individuals could be themselves without fear of judgment. Its closure underscores the devastating toll the wildfires have taken on the city and the fragility of spaces that serve as essential cultural and social resources for vulnerable populations.

As Los Angeles continues to grapple with the aftermath of the fires, the legacy of The Ruby Fruit will live on in the memories of those whose lives were touched by the bar’s unique spirit and its commitment to building a welcoming, inclusive community.
