  • Emilia Pérez Star Karla Sofía Gascón Apologizes for Past Controversy Amid Oscars Scandal

Emilia Pérez Star Karla Sofía Gascón Apologizes for Past Controversy Amid Oscars Scandal

Karla Sofía Gascón, the star of Emilia Pérez, has issued a heartfelt apology following a wave of controversy during this year’s Oscars season. The actress, who made history as the first openly transgender actor nominated for an Academy Award, found herself at the center of a scandal after past social media posts resurfaced. The posts, which included hateful and bigoted remarks, sparked widespread backlash from the public.

In an exclusive statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Gascón expressed regret over her past actions, discussing the emotional toll the situation has taken on her in recent months. The actress acknowledged the harm caused by her past words and emphasized her commitment to self-improvement and accountability.

“I’ve learned a lot over these past few months,” Gascón said. “I want to take this opportunity to listen, learn, and admit my mistakes, while also seeking forgiveness for the pain I’ve caused others.”

The controversy surrounding Gascón intensified after journalist Sarah Hagi uncovered a series of posts from Gascón’s time on X (formerly Twitter). The posts, written years ago, included derogatory statements targeting Islam and Muslims, as well as comments about immigrants, the Oscars, and the George Floyd protests.

The actress, who had enjoyed a period of success following her Oscar nomination, became the target of public scrutiny. Despite facing intense criticism, Gascón has since acknowledged the damage her comments caused and expressed a desire to make amends.

In her statement, Gascón reflected on her journey and the emotional impact of the controversy. She explained that she had built “a shield” around herself to cope with past struggles, but that this emotional barrier ultimately created additional harm to those around her.

“Shields can be cold and hard on the outside, and they can also hurt those who are close to you,” she said. “While I have been the target of harmful words, I also recognize that I have said hurtful things in the past. These words came from a place of fear, ignorance, and pain, and I deeply regret them.”

Gascón emphasized that there are no excuses for her past behavior and stressed that she was not attempting to justify her actions. “I apologize to anyone I have offended, and I ask for their forgiveness,” she stated. “I am committed to doing better, learning from my mistakes, and ensuring that I do not repeat them in the future.”

Mental health struggles have also played a significant role in Gascón’s personal journey. She revealed that, amid the scandal, she has faced “dark moments” in her life. In her statement, the actress admitted that at times the emotional weight of the situation was so overwhelming that she considered “the unthinkable.”

“There were moments during this painful experience when the pain became so intense that I considered giving up,” Gascón confessed. “I harbored darker thoughts than I had during other difficult times in my life. But through it all, I have managed to hold on to a small piece of sanity, and that has helped me see the light at the end of this tunnel of hate.”

Despite the emotional challenges, Gascón is determined to learn from her past and emerge stronger. “I understand now that I must be better and do better,” she said. “It’s important to me to correct the mistakes I’ve made and move forward with a more open heart, free from the darkness that has consumed me.”

The actress has previously issued public apologies, but some of her earlier statements were met with criticism for being defensive. In an interview with CNN en Español, Gascón stated: “I have not committed any crime, nor have I harmed anyone. I am not racist, nor am I anything that people are trying to make others believe about me.” However, in her latest statement, she took a more reflective approach, acknowledging her past mistakes without deflecting blame.

Gascón’s journey to redemption comes at a time when the spotlight is on her as one of the most high-profile LGBTQ+ figures in Hollywood. As a trailblazer in her industry, she has a significant platform to inspire change and dialogue around issues of representation, acceptance, and self-reflection.

In addition to her Hollywood career, Gascón has been an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, particularly for transgender rights. Her Oscar nomination marked a major milestone for transgender visibility in the entertainment industry, and many fans and supporters rallied behind her during the controversy.

Despite the turbulence she has faced, Gascón remains determined to use her experiences as an opportunity for growth. “I am deeply grateful for the kindness and understanding I’ve received from so many people during this difficult time,” she said. “As I continue to learn and evolve, I promise to be a better person, not just for myself, but for all those I’ve hurt along the way.”

In a post on her Instagram, Gascón shared the full statement with her followers, providing a summary in Spanish to reach a broader audience. She also included a message of hope, encouraging others to embrace forgiveness and the power of personal growth.

As Gascón moves forward, it remains to be seen how her career and public image will evolve. However, her commitment to change and her willingness to confront her past head-on have garnered support from many, while others continue to call for accountability in the public eye.

  • Paul Tazewell Makes History at the 97th Academy Awards as The First Black Man to Win Best Costume Design for ‘Wicked’

Paul Tazewell Makes History at the 97th Academy Awards as The First Black Man to Win Best Costume Design for ‘Wicked’

Paul Tazewell has made history at the 2025 Academy Awards, becoming the first Black man to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design. Tazewell earned the prestigious honor for his work on Wicked, the highly anticipated film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical. The award, presented during the 97th annual Academy Awards on March 2, marks a significant milestone in Tazewell’s career and in the history of the Oscars.

“This is absolutely astounding. Thank you, Academy, for this very significant honor,” Tazewell, 60, said in his acceptance speech. “I’m the first Black man to receive the costume design award for my work on Wicked. I’m so proud of this.”

Tazewell’s win comes just a few years after Ruth E. Carter made history as the first Black person to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design. Carter received the award for her groundbreaking work on Black Panther (2018) and later took home the trophy again for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). Tazewell’s victory signals a continued shift toward greater diversity in Hollywood, following in the footsteps of Carter’s groundbreaking achievements.

This year, Tazewell faced stiff competition in the Best Costume Design category, with other nominees including Arianne Phillips (A Complete Unknown), Janty Yates and David Crossman (Gladiator II), Lisy Christl (Conclave), and Linda Muir (Nosferatu). Despite the strong field, Tazewell’s visionary work on Wicked earned him the win, underscoring his mastery in bringing larger-than-life characters to the screen through wardrobe design.

Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu, is one of the most highly anticipated films in recent years. Tazewell’s costumes are a central element of the film’s visual storytelling, from the iconic green of Elphaba’s (played by Cynthia Erivo) ensemble to the sparkling pinks and blues of Glinda’s (Ariana Grande) outfits. Tazewell’s work is said to involve over 1,000 costume pieces, not only for Wicked but also for its sequel, Wicked: Part Two, which is currently in production. The film’s costumes have already garnered significant attention for their intricate design and their ability to reflect the personalities and journeys of the characters.

Tazewell’s success at the Oscars is not his first major recognition. His work on Wicked has already earned him multiple accolades, including wins at the Critics Choice Awards, the Costume Designers Guild Awards, and the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs). These honors have further cemented his status as one of the leading figures in costume design.

Speaking with KABC earlier in February, Tazewell reflected on the significance of his work being recognized by such esteemed institutions. “It means everything,” he said. “To have that acknowledgment, to have that approval by so many greats in our industry, it just means the world.”

Tazewell’s career has spanned several decades and includes notable work on films like Harriet (2019) and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story (2021). His costumes in Wicked and beyond showcase his ability to blend artistry with storytelling, using fabric and design to convey complex emotions and themes.

“I want to touch hearts, I want to change lives, I want to make a difference,” Tazewell told KABC. “And my power, my medium in doing that, is costume design. I’m passionate about it.” His passion for his craft and his belief in its ability to shape the way audiences engage with a story has driven his success in the field.

Tazewell’s nomination for Best Costume Design at the Oscars came as part of a significant year for Wicked, which earned a total of 10 nominations across multiple categories. These included Best Picture, Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo, and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande. Tazewell’s win further solidifies the film’s position as a major contender this award season.

In a celebratory Instagram post after his BAFTA win, Tazewell expressed his “immense gratitude” for his Wicked team and collaborators. “My deepest thanks also to Jon M. Chu and Marc Platt for turning these cinematic dreams into reality. Thank you for welcoming me into the Wicked family,” Tazewell wrote. He also extended his appreciation to audiences who have embraced the intricate details of the film’s costumes. “Your recognition makes this journey even more rewarding,” he added.

The Oscar win for Tazewell is not only a personal triumph but also a moment of representation for the Black community in Hollywood. His achievement adds to a growing list of Black creatives making history at the Academy Awards, further contributing to the ongoing conversation about diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry.

As Tazewell continues to push the boundaries of costume design, his work on Wicked remains a testament to his dedication to his craft. Whether through the iconic costumes of Glinda and Elphaba or the hundreds of other characters that populate the film, Tazewell’s designs have left an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape. His Oscar win is just one more chapter in a career that has already redefined what it means to use fashion as a tool for storytelling.

Fans and industry peers alike are sure to be watching closely as Tazewell continues to make his mark on Hollywood, with his upcoming work in Wicked: Part Two sure to be as groundbreaking as his Oscar-winning costumes in the first film.

  • Karla Sofía Gascón Appears to Skip Oscars Red Carpet as Tweet Controversy is Mocked During Opening Monologue

Karla Sofía Gascón Appears to Skip Oscars Red Carpet as Tweet Controversy is Mocked During Opening Monologue

Karla Sofía Gascón, star of Emilia Pérez, made her debut as an Oscar nominee at the 2025 Academy Awards but seemed to avoid the spotlight after controversy surrounding offensive, resurfaced tweets. Gascón, the first openly trans woman to be nominated for Best Actress, skipped the red carpet, opting for a low profile ahead of the ceremony.

The actress, who earned a nomination for her role as the titular character in Emilia Pérez, did not appear at the previous major award shows, including the SAG Awards, Critics Choice Awards, and the AFI Awards luncheon in early February. The absence fueled speculation about her status amidst the controversy.

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Netflix, the studio behind Emilia Pérez, covered Gascón’s travel costs to the ceremony, as is customary for studios supporting their Oscar nominees.

    Gascón Reflects on Her Journey
Despite the absence from the red carpet, Gascón did make an appearance inside the Dolby Theatre. When it was confirmed that she would attend the Oscars, the actress told THR exclusively, “I’m not sure how I feel, but I’m grateful to be back. I’m grateful to all those who’ve believed in me—Netflix, the production company, and my colleagues. We can close this beautiful and difficult path that began three years ago.”

Gascón was spotted near her Emilia Pérez co-star, Selena Gomez, inside the theater. Although she didn’t engage with the press, Gascón was acknowledged during the show. Host Conan O’Brien made a lighthearted comment during his opening monologue, referencing the controversy.

“I love AnoraAnora uses the f-word 479 times. That’s three more than the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist,” O’Brien joked, adding, “Karla Sofía Gascón is here tonight. Karla, if you are going to tweet about the Oscars, remember: My name is Jimmy Kimmel.”

While the remark was playful, it underscored the ongoing attention surrounding Gascón, even as she remained distant from direct interactions with the media.

César Awards Appearance and Public Reaction
Before the Oscars, Gascón made her first red carpet appearance since the controversy at the César Awards in France. However, she notably did not speak to the press during her time there. The actress, who has been a standout during awards season, had previously received numerous nominations and praise for her performance in Emilia Pérez, a film that leads this year’s Oscar race with 13 nominations.

Yet, Gascón’s path to the Oscars became complicated after old tweets resurfaced, which included racially charged remarks that many considered antisemitic and xenophobic. The tweets quickly sparked outrage, and Gascón was widely criticized for her past behavior.

In response, Gascón publicly apologized for the offensive comments and sat down for an hour-long interview with CNN en Español, where she defended herself. However, the actress eventually decided to step back from the film’s Oscar campaign, expressing her desire not to be a distraction. She stated that she wanted the film to be recognized for its merit, calling it a “beautiful ode to love and difference.”

The controversy surrounding Gascón has dominated the conversation surrounding Emilia Pérez, but the film’s director, Jacques Audiard, along with her co-stars Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez, have each addressed the issue in separate statements.

    Director and Co-Stars Speak Out
Audiard, in an interview with Deadline Hollywood, expressed his frustration with Gascón’s actions, saying, “I haven’t spoken to her, and I don’t want to.” He added, “She is in a self-destructive approach that I can’t interfere in, and I really don’t understand why she’s continuing. Why is she harming herself? Why? I don’t understand it, and what I don’t understand about this, too, is why she’s harming people who were very close to her.”

Saldaña also weighed in, expressing sadness over the controversy. “It makes me really sad because I don’t support [it], and I don’t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group,” Saldaña said. “I can only attest to the experience that I had with each and every individual that was a part, that is a part, of this film, and my experience and my interactions with them was about inclusivity and collaboration and racial, cultural, and gender equity. And it just saddens me.”

Gomez, who stars alongside Gascón in Emilia Pérez, shared a more nuanced perspective. She said that following the scandal, “Some of the magic has disappeared,” but added, “I want to continue to be proud of what I’ve done” and emphasized that she remains “grateful and live with no regrets.”

    Emilia Pérez Leads the Nominations
As the night of the Oscars unfolded, Emilia Pérez dominated the nominations with 13 nods, setting a new record for a non-English-language film. While Gascón’s nomination brought attention to her acting talent, it was clear that the controversy had overshadowed much of the film’s success.

Despite the challenges, Emilia Pérez was still in the spotlight, with the film’s director and cast hoping that the work itself would be the focus on what was otherwise a historic night for the Academy Awards.

The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, aired live coast-to-coast on Sunday, March 2, from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on ABC and Hulu. The road ahead for Gascón remains uncertain as the controversy continues to cast a shadow over her Oscar campaign. While the actress has stepped back from the campaign to allow the focus to return to the film, it’s clear that the conversation surrounding her will continue to be part of the larger narrative of the 2025 Oscars. As Emilia Pérez garners attention for its achievements, Gascón’s future in Hollywood remains to be seen.

Karla Sofia Gascón to Attend Oscars Amid Controversy

Karla Sofia Gascón, the first openly trans actor nominated for an Oscar, is set to attend the 95th Academy Awards on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Sources confirm that Netflix will cover the costs for Gascón, who is nominated for Best Actress for her performance in the Spanish-language musical Emilia Pérez.

While details of her attendance are still being finalized, it remains unclear whether Gascón will walk the red carpet, participate in interviews, or sit with her co-stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and director Jacques Audiard.

Ahead of the Oscars, Gascón is also scheduled to attend the César Awards in Paris on February 28.

The 2023 awards season for Gascón, however, has been clouded by controversy. The actress came under intense scrutiny after social media posts on X (formerly Twitter) surfaced, in which she made inflammatory comments about Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity at the Oscars. In response to the backlash, Gascón skipped several major award events, including the Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTA Film Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, despite being nominated at each.

In the aftermath, Gascón issued an apology, acknowledging the harm caused by her past social media activity. “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt,” she said in a statement to Variety. “As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well, and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”

On February 1, Gascón participated in a nearly hour-long interview with CNN en Español, where she stated that she would no longer comment publicly on the controversy.

Gascón’s Oscar nomination is a historic achievement, making her the first openly trans actor to be recognized in the Best Actress category. She previously made history as the first transgender woman to win the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival, a recognition she shared with Saldaña, Gomez, and Adriana Paz. Gascón was also the first trans woman nominated for acting at the Golden Globes. She is represented by UTA.

  • Cynthia Erivo and Lena Waithe Spark Engagement Rumors After NAACP Image Awards Appearance

Cynthia Erivo and Lena Waithe Spark Engagement Rumors After NAACP Image Awards Appearance

Cynthia Erivo and Lena Waithe have once again sparked rumors about their relationship after a joint appearance at the NAACP Image Awards on February 22, reigniting engagement speculation that has swirled around the two for weeks.

Erivo, who was nominated for Entertainer of the Year and Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in Wicked, arrived at the event alongside Waithe. Their appearance follows months of speculation about their romantic status, especially after Erivo was seen wearing a diamond ring at the 2025 Grammys. Although the ring was later confirmed not to be an engagement ring, the sighting fueled ongoing rumors about their private relationship.

While neither Erivo nor Waithe has publicly confirmed their romantic connection, the two have been linked since at least 2020. Their relationship is believed to have begun after meeting at the 2018 Met Gala. In a 2021 interview with Variety, Waithe revealed that she had long been a fan of Erivo’s performance in The Color Purple before they met, and that they had “been vibing” ever since.

Erivo has shared rare glimpses of their bond on social media, referring to Waithe as “perfection” in one of the few photos of the pair together on her Instagram feed. Over the years, the two have been spotted together at various high-profile events, including the BET Awards, the GLAAD Media Awards, and the Golden Globes, but they have kept their relationship mostly private.

Their closeness has been particularly noticeable in recent years, coinciding with Waithe’s separation from ex-wife Alana Mayo, with their divorce finalized in 2021. Despite their low-key public presence, the two have shown unwavering support for each other, often seen cheering one another on at major events. Waithe was by Erivo’s side at the 2024 Wicked premiere, helped hold Erivo’s gown at the 2024 Tony Awards, and sat beside her at the 2025 Golden Globes and Grammys.

Erivo has also expressed admiration for Waithe, often sharing heartfelt posts celebrating the writer and producer. For example, in one Instagram tribute to Waithe’s birthday, Erivo wrote a moving message expressing her respect and affection for her partner.

Fans of the couple have continued to speculate about their relationship, but Erivo and Waithe have kept their personal lives out of the public eye. Their appearance at the NAACP Image Awards is just another example of their quiet but strong presence in each other’s lives.

While they haven’t made any public declarations about the status of their relationship, their ongoing support for one another is undeniable. Netflix Pulls Back Support for Karla Sofía Gascón Amid Controversy, Oscar Campaign in Limbo

A new report reveals that Netflix is quietly distancing itself from Karla Sofía Gascón, the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for an acting Oscar, following a series of controversial social media posts. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gascón’s role in the film Emilia Pérez had initially positioned her as a frontrunner for awards season, but recent controversies have led the streaming giant to halt its support for her involvement in the campaign.

Gascón, who made history with her nomination for Best Actress at the Academy Awards, was set to attend a number of key awards events, including the AFI Awards luncheon, Critics Choice Awards, and the PGA Awards. However, reports indicate that Netflix has opted not to cover her travel, accommodation, or other associated costs for these events. Tensions reportedly escalated between the actress and the studio, leading to the removal of her name from promotional materials, such as email blasts and ad reads. Additionally, some events, including the Santa Barbara Film Festival, were said to be considering canceling their plans to feature Emilia Pérez if Gascón did not withdraw from participation.

    From Oscar Glory to Controversy

Emilia Pérez received widespread critical acclaim upon its release and made history with a record 13 Oscar nominations. Gascón’s role as the titular character, Emilia Pérez, cemented her place in LGBTQ+ history as the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an acting Oscar. However, her path to the Oscars has been marred by increasing scrutiny over past social media posts.

In late January, Gascón sparked a wave of controversy when she accused Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres—who is also nominated for Best Actress for her performance in I’m Still Here—of orchestrating a social media attack against her as a trans woman and against Emilia Pérez as a film. However, these claims were quickly debunked. Social media responses came predominantly from independent film critics and Brazilian fans of Torres who supported her Oscar campaign—not from any coordinated effort as Gascón had suggested.

The accusations were followed by the resurfacing of several old posts from Gascón’s social media accounts. These posts, dating back to the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s, included controversial opinions about various topics, including Islam, Muslims, George Floyd, and singer Adele. The discovery of these posts led to a wave of public backlash. Some of Gascón’s remarks were viewed as offensive, leading to further scrutiny of her character during the critical awards season.

Gascón Responds and Netflix Takes a Step Back

In response to the uproar over her past social media activity, Gascón issued an apology through a press statement, acknowledging the harm caused by her earlier comments. “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt,” she told Variety. “As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life, I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”

In an effort to distance herself from the controversy, Gascón deactivated her social media accounts. “I’m sorry, but I can no longer allow this campaign of hate and misinformation to affect me and my family, so at their request I am closing my account on X,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. She also spoke candidly about the threats and harassment she has received, adding, “I have been threatened with death, insulted, abused and harassed to the point of exhaustion. I have a wonderful daughter to protect, whom I love madly and who supports me in everything.”

Despite the fallout, Gascón’s nomination remains intact, and she has made it clear that she does not intend to withdraw from the Oscar race. Speaking to CNN en Español, Gascón explained, “I cannot renounce a nomination because what I have done is a job, and what is being valued is my acting work. I cannot renounce a nomination, either, because I have not committed any crime nor have I harmed anyone. I am not a racist nor am I anything that all these people have taken upon themselves to try to make others believe that I am.”

    A Film in Crisis

The situation has raised significant questions about the intersection of celebrity, social media, and awards campaigning. While Emilia Pérez had originally garnered attention for its historic Oscar nominations, Gascón’s public controversies have thrown a shadow over the film’s path to the Academy Awards. The film, which has received critical praise, now finds itself in a difficult position as it navigates the aftermath of the social media backlash.

The report from The Hollywood Reporter also highlights the internal tensions between Gascón and Netflix as they navigate the fallout. The decision to remove Gascón’s name from promotional materials and halt her participation in key events underscores the complexities of balancing support for a groundbreaking nomination with the realities of public relations in the #MeToo and cancel culture era.

As the Oscar race continues, all eyes will remain on the impact of these controversies on Gascón’s chances and the future of Emilia Pérez. The unfolding situation serves as a stark reminder of the challenges celebrities and films face in the age of social media, where past actions can resurface to impact present-day careers.

For Gascón, the battle is far from over. With her nomination still in place, she remains resolute in defending her body of work, despite the public scrutiny surrounding her personal history. The next few weeks will likely determine whether she can overcome the controversy or if her Oscar campaign will be overshadowed by the fallout from her past social media activity.
