  • Sebastian Stan and Leo Woodall to Star in Queer-Led True Story ‘Burning Rainbow Farm’

Sebastian Stan and Leo Woodall to Star in Queer-Led True Story ‘Burning Rainbow Farm’

Sebastian Stan (Thunderbolts) and Leo Woodall (The White Lotus) are teaming up for a powerful new film that blends political rebellion, counterculture history, and queer love. Titled Burning Rainbow Farm, the film is directed by Justin Kurzel (The Order) and based on the true story of Tom Crosslin and Rollie Rohm—two lovers who turned their rural Michigan land into a cannabis-friendly utopia before it all ended in a tragic and fiery standoff with the state.

The project, adapted from Dean Kuipers’ nonfiction book and written by Holding the Man screenwriter Tommy Murphy, is poised to make waves not just for its dramatic plot, but for centering a love story rarely explored in American cinema: one that’s both radical and queer.

A Real-Life Romance on the Frontlines

At its core, Burning Rainbow Farm is a political love story. Crosslin and Rohm weren’t just partners in life—they were partners in building something extraordinary. Rainbow Farm, as it was known, became a symbol of peaceful protest, cannabis legalization, and queer visibility in the early 2000s Midwest. The film follows the couple as they create their dream community, only to have it ripped apart by legal battles, the loss of their son, and a government siege that captured national attention.

Director Kurzel describes the project as “a love story about two outliers who raise their middle finger to hate and declare, ‘This is who we are, and we dare you to take it from us.’” With Stan and Woodall portraying the star-crossed lovers, the emotional gravity is expected to hit hard—and queer audiences are likely to see reflections of resilience, resistance, and tenderness often left out of similar genre films.

    Queer History Meets Mainstream Cinema

For a generation raised on sanitized Hollywood romances, Burning Rainbow Farm offers something refreshingly real. Not only does it revisit an overlooked chapter in queer and drug policy history, but it also places a same-sex relationship at the emotional center of a major cinematic release. And with Murphy—the writer behind the beloved gay romance Holding the Man—penning the script, the intimacy and complexity of the couple’s bond is in thoughtful hands.

This is not just another crime drama. It’s an elegy for queer love under siege, and a warning about how far state power will go to crush what it doesn’t understand.

    A-Listers Behind the Scenes

The film is being produced by Nicole O’Donohue, Kurzel, and Alexandra Taussig for Thirdborn, alongside Adam Shulman of Anonymous Content, Alix Madigan of Mad Dog Films, and Justin Lothrop and Brent Stiefel of Votiv. Rocket Science will present the project to international buyers at the Cannes Film Market, while CAA Media Finance is handling North American rights.

Sebastian Stan, hot off his Oscar-nominated turn in The Apprentice and starring in Thunderbolts, brings both depth and star power to the project. Leo Woodall, meanwhile, has continued to rise with roles in Prime Target, One Day, and the upcoming Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. With this film, both actors are taking on roles that demand emotional nuance and social weight.

    Representation That Matters

In a media landscape where queer stories are often sidelined or sanitized, Burning Rainbow Farm arrives like a Molotov cocktail of truth and tenderness. It’s a film that dares to explore what it means to love radically, live authentically, and stand your ground—even when the odds are stacked against you.

Burning Rainbow Farm is currently in pre-production. Keep your eyes on Cannes, and your hearts open for what might be one of the most essential queer films of the year.

  • Nyle DiMarco’s Directorial Debut ‘Deaf President Now!’ Chronicles a Historic Fight for Deaf Leadership

Nyle DiMarco’s Directorial Debut ‘Deaf President Now!’ Chronicles a Historic Fight for Deaf Leadership

Nyle DiMarco, the model, reality TV champion, and outspoken advocate for Deaf visibility, is stepping behind the camera for the first time—and he’s not pulling any punches.

Apple TV+ has just dropped the official trailer for Deaf President Now!, DiMarco’s debut documentary, which tells the powerful true story of the 1988 student uprising at Gallaudet University—an event that forever changed Deaf culture, higher education, and disability rights in the U.S.

A History Lesson You Didn’t Know You Needed

Unless you’re part of the Deaf community or a student of Gallaudet, chances are you’ve never heard of the Deaf President Now (DPN) movement. But DiMarco is here to change that.

Teaming up with Oscar-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth, He Named Me Malala), DiMarco brings long-overdue attention to the historic protest, which erupted when Gallaudet—the world’s only Deaf university—announced a hearing president over two qualified Deaf candidates.

The decision sparked outrage, leading students to shut down the campus for eight days and demand leadership that reflected their lived experience.

    From Protest to Power

The film zooms in on the “DPN4”—Bridgetta Bourne-Firl, Jerry Covell, Gregory Hlibok, and Tim Rarus—the four student leaders who galvanized the movement and helped turn frustration into historic change.

Deaf President Now! uses rare archival footage and intimate new interviews to re-create the energy of the protests, the resilience of the student body, and the tension that gripped the nation during those fateful days in March 1988.

In one jaw-dropping moment from the trailer, then–Board Chair Jane Bassett Spilman is heard reportedly saying that Deaf people were “not ready to function in a hearing world”—a remark that poured gasoline on an already blazing fire.

    A Legacy That Echoes

The outcome? Total victory. After eight intense days, the board reversed its decision and appointed Dr. I. King Jordan, the university’s first Deaf president. The movement didn’t just make headlines—it paved the way for landmark legislation like the Americans with Disabilities Act.

DiMarco, who rose to fame after winning America’s Next Top Model and Dancing with the Stars, has since become a leading voice for Deaf representation in media. With Deaf President Now!, he brings that passion full circle, creating space for Deaf stories to be told by Deaf voices.

    Coming to Apple TV+

After earning critical acclaim at Sundance earlier this year, Deaf President Now! officially premieres May 16 on Apple TV+. DiMarco’s message is loud and clear: this story may be decades old, but its urgency is very much alive.

She credited other trans women sharing their lives online and in the media with helping her take the leap toward living openly.

“Seeing trans women be honest and open, especially in public spaces like social media and getting to see them in their success, made me realize: maybe it’s not too late for me.”

De Niro has long spoken about his connection to the LGBTQ+ community, both through family and personal reflection. In 2014, he publicly discussed his late father, artist Robert De Niro Sr., who was gay, and shared regrets about not having deeper conversations with him during his lifetime.

In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, during Donald Trump’s presidency, De Niro also voiced concern for the safety and well-being of one of his sons who is gay, amid rising political and social tensions.

    Support That Speaks Volumes

While De Niro is famously private about his personal life, his public support of Airyn adds to a growing wave of Hollywood parents standing by their trans children with love and pride.

From Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union to Charlize Theron, celebrity families showing up for their LGBTQ+ kids are helping to shift the public narrative—and De Niro is the latest to remind the world: love is love.

Airyn De Niro, Daughter of Robert De Niro, Comes Out as Trans in Inspiring New Interview

Airyn De Niro, the 29-year-old daughter of Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro and actress Toukie Smith, has publicly come out as a trans woman in a heartfelt new cover story for Them. With grace, honesty, and a deep understanding of identity, De Niro opens up about her gender journey, the cultural influences that helped guide her, and what it means to embrace authenticity in her late 20s.

    “There Is Still Time”

De Niro’s story arrives at a cultural moment where late bloomers and second chances are being celebrated, echoing the now-iconic line from I Saw the TV Glow (2024): “There is still time.” For De Niro, that sentiment feels especially true.

“I started hormone therapy in November 2024,” she revealed in the interview. While her journey has included moments of hesitation and societal pressure, she has ultimately chosen self-love and openness—something she now hopes will inspire others.

“Trans women being honest and open, especially [in] public spaces like social media and getting to see them in their success… I’m like, ‘You know what? Maybe it’s not too late for me. Maybe I can start,’” she said.

Mermaid Magic and the Power of Representation

A major turning point for De Niro came in the form of 2023’s The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey. Seeing Bailey’s locs on screen inspired her to book her first appointment at a Black hair salon—a moment she calls transformational.

“I think a big part of [my transition] is also the influence Black women have had on me,” she said. “Stepping into this new identity, while also being more proud of my Blackness, makes me feel closer to them in some way.”

That intersection of race and gender identity—often erased or misunderstood—is central to De Niro’s story. Her lived experience as a Black trans woman gives depth and power to her coming out, which she approaches with both vulnerability and pride.

Battling Beauty Standards and Finding Self-Acceptance

Despite her current confidence, De Niro revealed she spent years contending with harsh societal pressures—especially within the LGBTQ+ community.

“[Gay men were] ruthless and mean,” she recalled. “I didn’t even fit that beauty standard, which is thin, white, muscular, or just super fit, masculine. I was always told I was too much of something or not enough of something growing up: Too big, not skinny enough. Not Black enough, not white enough. Too feminine, not masculine enough.”

It’s a candid look into how deeply those messages can cut, and how much strength it takes to unlearn them.

Growing Up with Famous (and Supportive) Parents

As the daughter of Robert De Niro and Toukie Smith, De Niro has long existed adjacent to fame—though her parents, she says, made it a point to shield her from the public eye.

“Obviously no parent is perfect,” she said, “but I am grateful that both my parents agreed to keep me out of the limelight. They wanted it very private. They have told me they wanted me to have as much of a normal childhood as possible.”

Her father, a known ally of the LGBTQ+ community, was honored by GLAAD in 2016 and previously opened up about his own father, Robert De Niro Sr., being a gay artist in the HBO documentary Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro, Sr.

    A Journey Just Beginning

De Niro is not only an actress and model but also studying to become a mental health counselor—work that reflects her deep investment in healing, identity, and helping others.

Her cover story is a powerful reminder that coming out has no deadline and that visibility, especially for Black trans women, matters more than ever.

‘Las Culturistas’ Culture Awards to Air on Bravo and Peacock This August Celebrating Pop Culture’s Most Iconic and Outrageous Moments

Get ready to scream “Culture!” from the rooftops. The Las Culturistas Culture Awards, hosted by podcast royalty Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, are headed to television for the first time—airing Tuesday, Aug. 5 on Bravo and streaming the next day on Peacock.

A Cultural Phenomenon Takes the Stage

Originally born from their beloved podcast Las Culturistas, Yang and Rogers’ awards show has become a celebration of pop culture’s most iconic, bizarre, and unforgettable moments. The show, now in its fourth year, isn’t just a niche fan favorite—it’s a full-blown cultural event.

Taped live in Los Angeles on July 17 and produced by Lionsgate Alternative Television, the 2025 ceremony promises over 100 gloriously absurd and oddly specific categories, live musical performances, and a star-studded lineup of presenters and guests. A full list of this year’s categories is still under wraps—but fans can expect the same witty chaos that’s made the podcast a cult hit since its 2016 debut.

Big Names, Big Laughs, Big Culture

In a joint statement, Rogers and Yang poked fun at the lofty definition of culture while perfectly capturing the show’s self-aware spirit:

“The word ‘culture’ is defined as ‘the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively,’” they said. “We are so thrilled to eliminate that whole ‘intellectual’ part entirely with the LCCAs airing on Bravo and Peacock this August… Because while what the world needs now might be love sweet love, it also needs to see an Oscar-winning actress and a Real Housewife come together to present a very heavy award to Oprah, if we can book her. Oprah, u up?!”

From Podcast to Pop Culture Powerhouse

Las Culturistas, known for its hilarious and high-low takes on everything from Tony Awards to TikTok trends, has featured guests like Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Ariana Grande. With its rapid-fire segments, unfiltered opinions, and endless quotables, the podcast has redefined how queer voices celebrate pop culture—and now it’s bringing that chaotic joy to a wider TV audience.

NBCUniversal’s EVP of live events and specials, Jen Neal, called the awards show “vibrant and whimsical,” adding, “Matt and Bowen’s undeniable chemistry, playful humor and love of pop culture’s big and small moments have shaped this spirited award show, redefining what it means to celebrate culture.”

The Las Culturistas Culture Awards will air on Bravo on Tuesday, Aug. 5, and stream on Peacock the following day.

  • Onya Nurve Crowned Winner of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 17 and Eyes EGOT Next

Onya Nurve Crowned Winner of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 17 and Eyes EGOT Next

It do take Nurve — and Onya Nurve has more than proven it. After a powerhouse run on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 17, Onya took home the crown and the title of America’s Next Drag Superstar on April 18, delivering a grand finale performance that had fans and judges alike on their feet.

Already a fan favorite before the final episode aired, Onya made history by racking up more than 700,000 likes on her #TeamOnya social media post, the most ever for a finalist. Her season-long display of charisma, talent, and fierce dedication to celebrating Black culture earned her four maxi-challenge wins — including the iconic Snatch Game — and the love of a global audience.

But when it came down to the final lip-sync battle, it was Onya’s performance of “Abracadabra” by Lady Gaga that sealed her fate. Clad in a commanding red ensemble, she chose not to rely on any dramatic costume reveals, opting instead to let her talent and stage presence do all the talking.

“I’ve never been a goop-and-gag kind of queen,” Onya said in an interview with GAY TIMES. “I am the goop and gag. I knew I just had to go out there, trust in myself, and leave it all on the stage.”

Since her crowning moment, Onya has been caught in a whirlwind of appearances, including a stop by Good Morning America — all on virtually no sleep.

“I haven’t even had time to eat!” she joked. “Everything’s been happening so fast, but I’m beyond grateful. Over the moon, honestly.”

Support from her family has played a central role in her journey. Her mother, Nina, stood by her side during the finale, while her father made an emotional appearance earlier in the season during the makeover challenge. “They just stopped crying yesterday,” Onya said with a laugh. “They’re so proud, and that means everything.”

The theater-loving queen brought that same passion and energy to the Drag Race stage all season long. Whether impersonating Eddie Murphy during Snatch Game or hosting the Drag Race Live! challenge, Onya’s background in performance arts clearly shined through.

“The hosting challenge was the one I was most proud of,” she said. “I host a lot outside of Drag Race, so it felt like home for me. That, and Snatch Game — taking on someone as legendary as Eddie Murphy wasn’t easy, but it was worth it.”

Onya’s presence on the show was more than just entertaining — it was meaningful. She consistently celebrated Black culture and identity, both in her looks and her storytelling. That authenticity resonated deeply with viewers who saw themselves represented in her.

“There are so many entertainers who look like me and feel like they have to work twice as hard to get half as far,” she said. “I just want to be living proof that if you work hard and stay true to yourself, you can do it — you can be a Drag Race superstar.”

Looking ahead, Onya isn’t just stopping at Drag Race fame. Her next goal? EGOT status — an elite group of artists who’ve won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award.

“I want the full set,” she said. “I’ve always dreamed of Broadway, and now that I’ve got this momentum, I’m going for it. I also told my mom I want to buy a house. Big dreams, baby!”

In addition to Broadway, Onya is already setting her sights on Hollywood. Her dream project? Starring alongside powerhouse actors like Viola Davis, Denzel Washington, Kerry Washington, and Lupita Nyong’o.

“That’s not even a dream — it’s a plan,” she said. “It’s going to happen.”

And yes, fans, she’s manifesting a future guest role on Abbott Elementary, too. “Oh, that’s happening,” she declared. “Already set in stone in my mind.”

While many queens aim to build beauty brands or launch music careers post-Drag Race, Onya’s ambitions feel even more expansive. She hopes her legacy is one that future generations of drag performers, especially Black queens, can look to for inspiration.

“I hope people see that drag isn’t just what we put on — it’s who we are,” she said. “The heart, the spirit, the love we bring to that stage. That’s what really matters.”

As her star continues to rise, Onya Nurve isn’t just basking in the glow of victory — she’s charging full speed toward an empire of her own making.

For now, though, she’s just soaking it all in. “It hasn’t fully hit me yet,” she admitted. “But one thing’s for sure — it took Nurve to get here, and I’ve still got plenty more to give.”

Karla Sofía Gascón Lands New Role After ‘Emilia Pérez’ Controversy

Actress Karla Sofía Gascón is set to return to the screen in a new role following the controversy surrounding her involvement in the 2024 film Emilia Pérez.

Gascón will play a psychiatrist who “embodies both God and the devil” in the psychological thriller The Life Lift, opposite Vincent Gallo, according to Variety. The film is the directorial debut of Italian filmmaker Stefania Rossella Grassi.

    “The Life Lift” Plot

The Life Lift stars Gallo as Gabriel, a New York resident who receives messages on Post-it notes in his building’s elevator. These messages instruct him to commit murders of three other tenants who are also plotting to kill their relatives, Variety reported.

    “Emilia Pérez” Controversy

Emilia Pérez, which received 13 nominations at the Oscars in 2024, was a controversial film. The film drew criticism from Mexican and transgender critics for its portrayal of their communities, and faced general audience disapproval.

A post shared by Karla Sofía Gascón (@karsiagascon)

The controversy surrounding Gascón escalated when social media posts containing racist and bigoted statements about Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity at the Oscars resurfaced. Gascón, the first openly transgender actor to be nominated for an acting Oscar, attended the ceremony for which she was nominated for Best Actress but did not walk the red carpet.

    Gascón’s Apologies

Initially, Gascón defended herself, claiming she was not hateful or racist and was being targeted by harassment. However, in March 2025, she issued a new apology through The Hollywood Reporter.

“With no excuse, and without any intention to justify any of my past actions, I apologize to all I have offended at any point in my life and throughout my journey,” Gascón stated. “I humbly ask for their forgiveness and, to honor their kindness and understanding, I promise I will commit to continuing to learn and listen, so as not to make the same mistakes in the future.”

    Gallo’s Controversy

Gallo has also been the subject of controversy. Most recently, three actresses filed a complaint with SAG-AFTRA, alleging that during auditions for his upcoming film The Policeman, Gallo made lewd comments, including, “I may ask you to suck my cock onscreen, and I want an actress who is not going to put up a fight about that,” Variety reported.

    Gascón’s Upcoming Projects

In addition to The Life Lift, Gascón has other upcoming projects. She is set to star in Las Mala, a Spanish-language trans fable by Oscar-winning director Armando Bó (Birdman). Gascón also filmed an Italian comedy, Men and Other Inconveniences, before Emilia Pérez, which is expected to be released soon.

  • Michelle Williams Reflects on ‘Brokeback Mountain’ Impact and Infamous Oscars Snub on ‘Watch What Happens Live’

Michelle Williams Reflects on ‘Brokeback Mountain’ Impact and Infamous Oscars Snub on ‘Watch What Happens Live’

It’s been nearly two decades since Brokeback Mountain changed the landscape of LGBTQ+ cinema forever. Released in 2005, the film follows the forbidden love between ranchers Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) in the rugged Wyoming wilderness. Directed by Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain was not just a film; it was a cultural moment, sparking discussions about love, identity, and the challenges of queer representation in mainstream media.

A Film that Shaped Queer Cinema

Back in 2005, Brokeback Mountain arrived at a time when LGBTQ+ representation in Hollywood was sparse and often sidelined. Yet, the film’s raw portrayal of a romantic relationship between two men in a conservative environment resonated with audiences worldwide. Despite some conservative backlash, it became both a critical and commercial hit, solidifying its place as one of the most important queer films in history.

When the 78th Academy Awards came around, Brokeback Mountain was the frontrunner for Best Picture, with nominations across eight categories. But in a shocking upset, the film lost the top award to Crash, a divisive ensemble drama about race and prejudice that has since been regarded by many as one of the most controversial and regrettable Best Picture winners in Oscar history. For many queer viewers, this was a moment of heartbreak and disbelief—a massive snub for a film that not only told a powerful queer love story but also challenged societal norms.

Michelle Williams Gets Real About “Crash” and the Oscars Snub

This year marks 20 years since Brokeback Mountain’s release, and Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen couldn’t resist bringing up the infamous Oscars loss when Brokeback star Michelle Williams appeared on the show to promote her new role in Dying for Sex. Cohen, who is no stranger to passionate opinions about queer cinema, shared his disappointment with the outcome of that year’s Best Picture category.

Williams, ever the icon, didn’t hold back when asked about the snub. “I mean, what was Crash?” she responded with a mix of feigned innocence and cutting shade, immediately sending waves of laughter through the audience. Cohen, fully agreeing with her, quipped, “Who’s talking about Crash right now?” It was a moment of pure brilliance that felt like the movie equivalent of saying, “You’re not even worth my time.”

Brokeback Mountain vs. Crash: The Stats Don’t Lie

As the years have gone by, Brokeback Mountain has continued to stand the test of time, while Crash has all but faded from public consciousness. Critics and audiences alike continue to praise Brokeback Mountain for its moving performances, stunning cinematography, and poignant exploration of forbidden love. The film remains a beloved classic with an 88% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In comparison, Crash has a respectable but less impressive 72% rating, and its box office performance was modest at best. Brokeback grossed $178 million worldwide, while Crash made just $98 million. Even at the Oscars, Brokeback Mountain received more nominations and was seen as the more deserving film, yet Crash walked away with the top honor.

The Lasting Legacy of Brokeback Mountain

Fast forward to today, and Brokeback Mountain is more than just a relic of the past; it’s a cultural touchstone. The film was added to the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress and continues to inspire filmmakers and audiences alike. It even made its way to the stage in 2023 with a critically acclaimed adaptation starring Lucas Hedges and Mike Faist.

In contrast, Crash is mostly remembered for Sandra Bullock’s character’s cringe-worthy bigoted remarks and the less-than-dramatic fall she takes down a set of stairs.

So, in the immortal words of Michelle Williams, “What was Crash?” Twenty years later, Brokeback Mountain continues to reign supreme, and Crash remains little more than an embarrassing footnote in Oscars history.
