Margaret Cho Calls Out Ellen DeGeneres for ‘Weird’ and ‘Not Nice’ Behavior Over Decades-Long Relationship

Comedian and LGBTQ+ icon Margaret Cho is speaking candidly about her decades-long, and often strained, relationship with fellow comedian and former daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. In a recent appearance on The Kelly Mantle Show, Cho didn’t hold back as she described DeGeneres as “mean,” “really weird,” and dismissive over the course of their professional careers — despite knowing each other since the 1980s.

The conversation adds another layer to the ongoing reassessment of DeGeneres’ public image following the 2020 allegations of workplace toxicity on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which ultimately led to the show’s conclusion in 2022 and DeGeneres’ retirement from public life.

“She’s Mean”: Cho Opens Up About Her Long History with DeGeneres

During her interview with host Kelly Mantle, Cho reflected on the early years of her career when she and DeGeneres were both emerging comedians on the stand-up circuit. Cho revealed she even opened for DeGeneres in the ’80s, well before either comedian achieved mainstream fame. “Ellen was really weird and not nice to me for most of my career,” Cho said. “I opened for her in the 1980s, when she was a headliner in comedy clubs and way before her big fame. So then later, when I would do her talk show in the 2000s, she acted like we just met.”

Cho went on to describe DeGeneres as a “mean girl,” saying that while the Finding Dory star could sometimes be kind, there was always a chilly undertone in their interactions. “She’s mean,” Cho stated. “But also she would be real nice. I think she always had kind of negative feelings towards me because her girlfriends and wives always liked me.”

The comment hinted at underlying tension, potentially fueled by jealousy or professional rivalry. Cho, who has always been an unapologetic and outspoken queer performer, has often spoken out against exclusion within queer spaces — and her remarks suggest that her dynamic with DeGeneres may be a prime example.

    Forgotten Friendship or Intentional Snub?

Cho also took issue with what she described as DeGeneres pretending not to know her, despite their shared history. “I’m like, bitch, what? Like, that’s weird,” Cho said. “We go way back. It’s so creepy and weird.”

For Cho, this behavior wasn’t just baffling — it felt personal. She explained that when she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show years later, DeGeneres acted as though they were strangers. The erasure of their professional past, combined with an overall cold demeanor, left Cho feeling dismissed and disrespected.

A representative for DeGeneres did not respond to requests for comment at the time of publication.

A Deleted David Bowie Moment Adds Fuel to the Fire

One of Cho’s most vivid grievances centers around a cut segment from an appearance she made on DeGeneres’ talk show during an episode that also featured David Bowie. Cho recalled attending Bowie’s concert the night before in an elaborate Chinese emperor outfit — a look that Bowie adored and reportedly praised on the show.

But that praise never made it to air. “He was really thrilled about it and he talked at length about it. And she cut it out of the show, which made me so mad,” Cho revealed.

According to Cho, the decision wasn’t editorial but potentially personal. A producer friend later confirmed to her that Bowie had enthusiastically mentioned her on the show — only to have it cut before the episode aired. “The producer, who is a really good friend of mine, had to call me and tell me, ‘I can’t believe she did this, she cut it out of the show. But you need to know, he was going on and on about your outfit. He loves you. God said your name,’” Cho explained.

While Cho acknowledged that time constraints may have played a role in the decision, she admitted she couldn’t help but take it personally. “I don’t know if it was personal, maybe it was for time,” she said. “But still, I’m going to take it personally just because I decided to.”

The Broader Context: Ellen’s Complicated Legacy

Cho’s comments come at a time when the public continues to grapple with DeGeneres’ complicated legacy. Once hailed as a trailblazer for LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream media — especially after famously coming out in 1997 — DeGeneres’ reputation took a significant hit in 2020. Former staff members of The Ellen Show alleged a toxic and hostile work environment, leading to an internal investigation, a public apology from DeGeneres, and the eventual cancellation of her long-running show.

For many in the LGBTQ+ community, DeGeneres had been a symbol of resilience and visibility. But stories from fellow performers like Cho add further nuance to how that legacy is perceived — especially when it comes to how Ellen treated others within the queer creative space.

    A Pattern or an Outlier?

Margaret Cho is not the first celebrity to speak out about an icy or dismissive interaction with Ellen DeGeneres. Over the years, a handful of stars and comedians have alluded to similar feelings — that DeGeneres’ public persona did not always match her off-camera demeanor.

Still, Cho’s remarks stand out because of her long, personal history with DeGeneres and her fearless reputation for calling out power structures, even within the queer community.

“The Public Perception Is More True Now”

Reflecting on the broader fallout surrounding DeGeneres’ career, Cho summarized her feelings with a quiet, damning observation: “She’s somebody that I’ve known for such a long time,” Cho said. “And the public perception of her is more true now.”

Whether Cho’s words will spark renewed scrutiny or a broader conversation about inclusion, competition, and kindness within queer spaces remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: for Margaret Cho, the truth — no matter how uncomfortable — is always worth sharing.

A Historic Year: LA Pride Turns 55

This year marks a major milestone for LA Pride: 55 years of marching, dancing, and demanding equality. In honor of this legacy, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, with support from Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath, has officially declared June 28 as “LA Pride – Christopher Street West Day” moving forward.

The proclamation recognizes LA Pride’s distinction as the world’s first permitted LGBTQ+ parade, a historic moment led by Christopher Street West in 1970, just one year after Stonewall.

“This year, we’re making all of LA Pride’s programming free and accessible for everyone on Parade Sunday,” said CSW Board President Gerald Garth. “We’re thrilled to welcome Alaska, Da Brat, and an incredible roster of performers. And we thank the County Board for recognizing the deep history of Pride in Los Angeles.”

Grand Marshals & This Year’s Theme

LA Pride also recently revealed its 2025 Grand Marshals:

    • Niecy Nash and Jessica Betts as Vanguard Grand Marshals

    • Andrew Rannells as Celebrity Grand Marshal

    • Trino Garcia and Adam Vasquez (aka viral couple TrinoxAdam) as Community Grand Marshals

The 2025 theme, “Pride Marches On,” celebrates the LGBTQ+ community’s resilience and unrelenting push for progress, even when the world pushes back.

    Stay Tuned

More details on the parade route, parking, transit options, and vendor list are expected soon. For the latest updates, follow @lapride on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

So shine your boots, fluff your wigs, and hydrate: Hollywood is about to turn into the queerest party of the year.

From Apartment Spoof to Cultural Staple

The Little Pageant That Could tells the larger-than-life origin story of the Best in Drag Show, which began in 1990 as a tongue-in-cheek parody of Miss America staged in a cramped West Hollywood apartment. What started as a joke among friends has grown into L.A.’s longest-running drag benefit, attracting celebrity judges, sold-out crowds, and serious fundraising power.

Directed by John Carlos Frey—who also served as the original stage show’s director—the film features never-before-seen footage and laugh-out-loud moments spanning the show’s 33-year history. Expect appearances from a star-studded cast of past guests, including Jennifer Coolidge, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Anna Faris, Martin Sheen, and fashion icon Bob Mackie.

Coming to WOW Presents Plus May 29

Following the benefit event, The Little Pageant That Could will premiere globally on WOW Presents Plus, joining a lineup of critically acclaimed documentaries like The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Party Monster, and Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures.

The platform has been expanding its library of original and acquired content in 2024, with notable additions like the Elvira Collection, the comedy duo specials Happily Ever Laughter and No Refunds from creators Darcy and Jer, and the upcoming scripted series I Hate People, People Hate Me.

Executive produced by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, and produced by David Neuendorff, James Cude, and Frey himself, the documentary is the latest testament to World of Wonder’s legacy of blending entertainment with activism, storytelling with sparkle.

  • Zane Phillips and Jelani Alladin Star in Queer 1980s Thriller ‘Strangers on a Beach’

Zane Phillips and Jelani Alladin Star in Queer 1980s Thriller ‘Strangers on a Beach’

Get ready for sun, suspense, and steamy secrets. Fire Island star Zane Phillips and Fellow Travelers breakout Jelani Alladin are set to headline Strangers on a Beach, a queer erotic thriller set in 1980s San Francisco, premiering this June at the Big Apple Film Festival.

A Queer Thriller With a Vintage Edge

Set in 1983, Strangers on a Beach follows Calvin, a man trying to survive—and maybe fall in love—in a city where queer desire is being stalked by something far more dangerous. The official logline reads: “It’s 1983 in San Francisco and a mysterious killer is targeting homosexual men. But Calvin just wants to kiss that handsome stranger.”

Written and directed by Michael Schwartz (Snatched), the film draws inspiration from the stylized suspense of David Lynch and Brian De Palma. But unlike the coded queerness of many thrillers from that era, Strangers on a Beach brings queer identity and desire front and center.

    Sexy, Scary, and Unapologetically Queer

In a statement, Schwartz explained the film’s ethos:

“Studio films of that era often reveled in queer subtext. But even between the lines, queerness was frequently coded as danger. That kind of projection carried difficult consequences, as did the concealment of identity. By centering authentically queer voices—all while keeping things scary, sexy, and strange—we set out to challenge the biases of both the characters and the audience who watch them.”

Alongside Phillips and Alladin, the film stars Juliana Aidén Martinez (Griselda), Jack Falahee (How to Get Away With Murder), Nancy Lam (Miss Saigon), and Perry Young (In the Heights).

The film is produced by Andrew Carlberg (Skin) and Nilou Safinya (Julia Blue), marking their third collaboration under Safinya’s Eyes Up Here Productions and Schwartz’s Boat Ashore Productions.

    Rising Stars and Veteran Talent

Alladin, fresh off his acclaimed performance opposite Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey in Fellow Travelers, also appeared in Tick, Tick…Boom with Andrew Garfield. Phillips, who rose to fame in Fire Island, recently appeared on the Hulu sitcom Mid-Century Modern.

When he’s not behind the camera, Schwartz also co-created That’s a Gay Ass Live Show, a variety game show that opened the NY Comedy Festival and appeared at Netflix Is a Joke, featuring stars like Bowen Yang, Matt Rogers, and Margaret Cho.

Strangers on a Beach is set to make its world premiere at the Big Apple Film Festival in June—just in time for Pride Month. Don’t miss this thrilling dive into queer danger, desire, and identity, wrapped in the dreamy haze of a bygone era.
