Hilary Duff, the adored Disney Channel actress, stands in unwavering solidarity, joining the picket lines in protest alongside the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes that have reverberated through Hollywood studios since May.
While picketing outside Paramount Studios on Monday, the former Lizzie McGuire star, joined by her How I Met Your Father costar, Francia Raisa, treated fans to a nostalgic moment by singing “What Dreams Are Made Of,” the iconic Disney song from 2003’s The Lizzie McGuire Movie. The heartwarming scene was captured in a video shared by Deadline on Twitter, showing the two talented actresses gleefully singing and dancing while chanting the familiar lines, “Hey now, hey now!”
Actors and Writers on Strike
Screenwriters have been on strike since May 2. Earlier this month, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (or SAG-AFTRA), voted to join the strike due to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers’ failure to reach a new contract agreement. Labor union president Fran Drescher said it was a unanimous vote and meant many Hollywood projects would be put on hold as hundreds of famous actors joined the picket lines.
In addition to Hilary Duff, Jason Sudeikis, Susan Sarandon, Joey King, Logan Lerman, and so many more have shown up at studios with their signs.
Duff also shared additional photos and videos from her time on the picket lines. She wrote, “Out there with my @himyfonhulu crew. We stand with our union! Let’s gooooooo.”
Hilary Duff’s Legacy
In her acting career, Duff achieved fame through her portrayal of a 13-year-old navigating the trials of junior high school in the beloved series Lizzie McGuire, which ran from 2001 to 2004 and garnered two Emmy Award nominations. Additionally, she lent her voice to her character’s animated counterpart, solidifying her place in the hearts of fans, young and old.
The series also gave rise to a feature film, The Lizzie McGuire Movie, released in 2003. And while fans were thrilled with the announcement of a revival series for Disney+ in 2019, which would have followed Lizzie’s life as an adult, production came to a halt in January 2020 when the original creator, Terri Minsky, stepped away from the project where she served as the showrunner.
In December of that year, Duff broke the unfortunate news of the series’ official cancellation on Instagram, acknowledging the extensive efforts made to bring the reboot to fruition. However, she expressed the importance of staying true to the character of Lizzie and her authenticity in today’s context, a portrayal that the character truly deserved.
Presently, Hilary Duff is captivating audiences as Sophie Tompkins in How I Met Your Father, a spinoff of the beloved CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Francia Raisa, who plays Sophie’s best friend Val Morales, is co-starring alongside her.
