Kristen Stewart says even one of the straightest roles she has ever done, Bella in Twilight, is so gay.
βI can only see it now,β she said in a recent interview with Variety. βI donβt think it necessarily started off that way, but I also think that the fact that I was there at all, it was percolating.β
With its blend of supernatural romance and teenage angst, the Twilight series has left an indelible mark on society. First hitting bookshelves and then dominating the big screen, Stephenie Meyer’s creation sparked a cultural phenomenon that extended far beyond its core demographic.
βItβs such a gay movie,β Stewart continued. βI mean, Jesus Christ, Taylor and Rob and me, and itβs so hidden and not OK. I mean, a Mormon woman wrote this book. Itβs all about oppression, about wanting whatβs going to destroy you. Thatβs a very Gothic, gay inclination that I love.β
“Everyone’s Gay”
Later in the interview, Stewart was asked “if she understands how much her decision to come out has also made her a role model for LGBTQ people.”
βOh, you have no idea. Every single woman that Iβve ever met in my whole life who ever kissed a girl in college is like, βYeah, I mean, me too.ββ she said. βIβm constantly joking with my girlfriend. Iβll be sitting there and be like, βSheβs gay too. Everyoneβs gay.ββ
The actor came out in 2017 while hosting an episode of Saturday Night Live. She did a callback to the time Donald Trump tweeted about her relationship with costar Robert Pattinson. βDonald, if you didnβt like me then, youβre really probably not going to like me now, because Iβm hosting βSNLβ ββ―and Iβm, like, so gay, dude.”
βIt was cool to frame it in a funny context because it could say everything without having to sit down and do an interview,β She recalled. If she had chosen to publicly come out via a news outlet, she would have encountered a barrage of probing questions. ββSo what platform is that going to be on? And whoβs going to make money on that? And whoβs going to be the person that broke it?β I broke it, alone.β
Let’s Go to Sundance
Stewart will be attending the Sundance Film Festival later this month for the premiere of her two films, Love Me and Love Lies Bleeding.
In the sci-fi romance Love Me, Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun take on the roles of a satellite and buoy, forming an online connection on an Earth devoid of humans. The second film, Love Lies Bleeding, is a romantic queer thriller featuring Stewart as a mysterious gym manager who falls for a sexy bisexual bodybuilder (played by Katy OβBrian).
