Wait, What Happened During Harry Styles’ Grammy Performance?

Harry Styles and his dancers had to change their entire routine when the turntable spun the wrong way.

Before taking home the most significant award of the night, Harry Styles took the stage at The Grammys to deliver an unforgettable performance. Unfortunately, the show did not go as planned. They ran into some serious technical difficulties. On live television.

For context, Styles performed his hit single “As It Was” at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards last Sunday night. When the curtain dropped, the twelve dancers stood on a giant spinning turntable – similar to the one in the singer’s music video for the track. But when the music started, everyone looked a bit lost.

Still, Styles rocked the stage in his shimmering jumpsuit while his dancers continued to perform on the turntable. Then, the singer rejoined everyone for an upbeat finale featuring choreography from the music video.

When asked about the performance, Styles recalled it as “magical,” but something seemed off. And now we know why. The turntable spun the wrong way leaving the performers to do their entire routine backward.

One dancer, Brandon Mathis, posted on Instagram days after the awards show, clearing the air about what happened that night.

“The moment the curtain opened and it was time to perform, our turntable started spinning in reverse… freaking all of us out on live television… and there was nothing we could do to stop it.”

Another dancer, who goes by Dexdexrevolution, said they had rehearsed the routine for ten days and had perfected some “beautiful formations,” only to be unable to do them because of the malfunction.

“To switch all of those patterns around on the spot [without] having even walked in that direction?… Since it’s circular it pulls you in different directions and it’s such a special type of balance so we got accustomed to one way and it was the opposite way so luckily we worked together and did our best and got to one cool formation.”

Luckily, no one was hurt during the performance and Styles was able to finish his song. However, we’re still bummed no one got to see the show’s full potential.

On the bright side, Styles took home multiple awards that night for Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year.
