Gus Kenworthy Announces Olympic Comeback: ‘It’s This or Nothing’

Olympic silver medalist Gus Kenworthy is snapping on his skis once again.

The 33-year-old freestyle skier, actor, and LGBTQ+ icon announced he is coming out of retirement with his sights set on the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. In an interview with ESPN, Kenworthy said he has already resumed training and is feeling more motivated than ever to make a comeback.

A Second Wind for the Slopestyle Star

“After taking a step away, I realized I miss skiing, and I really want to compete again,” Kenworthy said. “I didn’t know if I would be able to come back after three and a half years, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to after seven and a half. So it’s this Olympics or nothing.”

Kenworthy, who last competed in 2022, had previously announced his retirement following a crash in the men’s final. At the time, he called it his “final hurrah” and told Olympics.com, “I’m done competing. I’ve had a career that I’m really, really proud of.”

But time away from the slopes made one thing clear: the Olympic flame in him hadn’t gone out just yet.

    Setbacks, Then a Reset

While Kenworthy had previously considered a comeback, a series of setbacks—including two major concussions and a bout with COVID-19—forced him into recovery and reflection. During that period, he admits, he faced something of an identity crisis.

Now, with renewed perspective, Kenworthy is returning for the right reasons.

“I don’t feel like I’m going back into it because I don’t know who I am otherwise,” he said. “I’m going back into it because I can still do it, and because I want to.”

Back to His Roots—But with British Flair

Though originally representing Team USA—where he won a silver medal in slopestyle at Sochi 2014—Kenworthy will once again compete for Great Britain, his birth nation. He moved to Colorado at age two but maintains dual citizenship and previously made the switch to represent Team GB at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

As one of the first openly gay male athletes to compete at the Olympic level, Kenworthy’s return is not only an athletic comeback but also a cultural moment for fans around the world who have followed his journey on and off the slopes.

Before Andrew, Gus was in a relationship with Tyler Green, a software account executive. While it’s unclear when they parted ways, Gus and Tyler are still on friendly terms, with Tyler appearing in several photos with Gus and Andrew. This amicable relationship between Gus and his ex shows that the two have maintained a respectful connection despite moving on from one another.

In addition to sharing moments with his boyfriend, Gus Kenworthy has opened up about his views on relationships and the LGBTQ+ community. In an interview with Drag Race star Katya on Grindr’s Who’s the A**hole? podcast, Gus discussed his experiences with relationships and the concept of exclusivity. He explained that while some of his friends are in exclusive, monogamous relationships, many others prefer more open dynamics, where they might explore connections with others, either together or separately.

Gus went on to share how his past relationships have navigated the concept of openness.

“I would say most of the people that I know that are in long-term relationships are… in some way, shape, or form, open,” he said, adding that these arrangements can range from occasional threesomes to more expansive open relationships. Gus admitted to having had several threesomes in his life, even joking about having to “kick someone out” of a threesome when things weren’t going well. “If you’re coming into it in a relationship, you and your boyfriend usually have some kind of… like, you can tell,” he said, reflecting on how important communication and mutual understanding are in maintaining a healthy dynamic in these situations.

While Gus’s past relationships and experiences in the open relationship realm have been a topic of discussion, it’s clear that his relationship with Andrew Rigby is rooted in mutual affection and respect. Gus frequently shares posts celebrating Andrew, showcasing their adventures and playful moments together. Their connection appears to be one of genuine love and happiness, and fans are excited to see where their journey together leads.

Gus Kenworthy Opens Up About His Sex Life And Reveals He’s Had More Threesomes Than One-on-One Sex

Actor and former Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy spoke openly about his sexual preferences nearly 10 years after publicly coming out as gay.

Kenworthy, a gold medalist who retired from competitive skiing in 2022, discussed his experiences with threesomes, monogamy, and public sex during an appearance on Grindr’s Who’s The A**hole? podcast, hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race favorite Katya Zamolodchikova.

Kenworthy revealed that, despite being in relationships for most of his adult life, he has had “more threesomes than… sex one-on-one with people.”

“I do like threesomes. I’m a serial monogamist. They haven’t always been monogamous, but I’ve always been in a relationship, literally my entire life. I’m always in a relationship, which is why I’ve had a lot of threesomes,” Kenworthy said.

He added that “most” of the queer people he knows are in open relationships.

“I’m not saying that all relationships should be open, but I think one of the things that’s beautiful about queer relationships is that we are, by nature, non-traditional, so we don’t have to conform to heteronormative traditions,” Kenworthy said.

He added, “The key and the baseline is trust, honesty, and communication, and then you can set your own parameters.”

The 80 for Brady star confirmed he is currently in a relationship after seemingly debuting his romance on Instagram last week.

In a post, he shared several photos, including one of him lying shirtless on a beach in Sydney, Australia, kissing a man identified as Andrew Rigby.

Rigby posted a topless photo with Kenworthy in January, captioned with a heart emoji.

In addition to plenty of threesomes, the athlete shared that he’s attended a few group sessions or two, enjoys being watched in the shower, and is a fan of sex in public – as long as it’s away from people who wouldn’t want to see it.

“I went to Madrid Pride this last year and went to an afters that was basically a sex party in a hotel room. It was hot because there were so many people, but it was kind of like, I wouldn’t pick anyone in this room for a one-on-one thing so it’s sort of like forgoing that because it’s this big group thing,” he explained of his recent group experience.

“It was fine, but I didn’t stay very long and wasn’t really into it,” Kenworthy said of the experience. “I’ve been to a couple of bathhouses. I wasn’t into it the first time I went, but then I had fun.”

He also revealed that he has attended the Burning Man festival in Nevada, known for its various sex events, including an orgy dome, calling it “one of [his] favorite things [he’s] ever experienced.”

Kenworthy went on to tell Katya that he is “pretty into” having sex in public, as long as there is no one around who wouldn’t want to see it.

“I think that’s disrespectful,” he explained. “If there could be kids around, I’m not into that at all. But a dark room at a club? I think it’s hot to have sex somewhere in a dark room. Or doing it in nature, but not necessarily with people around—I think that’s hot.”

One of the most impactful aspects of Kenworthy’s Coffee Table Book Club is its commitment to social good. For every new subscription or gift, a book will be donated to LGBTQIA+ youth in states where book bans are currently in place. The donations will be made through the Rainbow Book Bus, an initiative aimed at promoting LGBTQ+ representation and visibility in communities where access to inclusive literature is limited.

“It’s more than just a book club—it’s a little act of rebellion,” Kenworthy said, highlighting the importance of making LGBTQ+ youth feel seen and represented in literature. By joining the club, subscribers are not only supporting the arts but also contributing to the larger cause of representation and inclusivity.
