The madness that is The CW series Riverdale is coming to an end. But not without a jaw-dropping final episode.
As expected from any episode of Riverdale, this final chapter delivered its fair share of unexpected twists. The first season explored teen troubles and secrets, but later seasons had far more complex plots. The entire series feels like a fever dream – which is exactly what the final episode hints at. The show has become widely known for including storylines like cults, gangs, bear fights, drug dealing nuns, tickle porn, and rat kings. And that’s just scratching the surface. However, what took everyone by surprise this season was the revelation that our core quartet had been in a quad relationship for a whole year.
The episode also takes us to the future, where an 86-year-old Betty, played by Lili Reinhart, discovers Jughead’s passing in the obituaries. She’s now the last one alive from her friends at Riverdale. She confides in her granddaughter, expressing her desire to revisit Riverdale one last time. In a dream that very night, Jughead comes to her and offers to transport her back to any day in Riverdale. Betty chooses to return to her missed high school graduation day.
“It started innocently enough with the four of us going on double dates – me and Archie, Jughead and Veronica. And then it kind of naturally evolved from there,” she tells Reggie Mantle (Charles Melton). “Some nights Archie would sneak into my bedroom and Veronica would go home with Jughead. Other nights, Archie would spend the night at The Pembrooke, and I’d go over to Jughead’s.”
Wait for it.
“And sometimes, more often than you’d imagine, I would find my way to Veronica’s,” she concludes. Beronica fans rejoice!
So, the end of the series reveals a quad polyamorous relationship between the main characters. Yup, just another day in a little town called Riverdale.
Fans of the show have been waiting for these two leading ladies to get together (after multiple episodes hinted and teased just that). Now, we can finally say it happened.
The episode also revealed the lives and deaths of Betty, Veronica, Jughead and Archie. Scroll to read what happened to the core four.
