In December, Mulvaney opened up to her followers about her planned surgery and said she would take a break to let her face heal.

“Oh my gosh, hi! I missed you! You know I have a flair for the dramatics,” she said about her elaborate video. “But it’s so good, right? I’m so happy! It’s still me, just a little bit softer of a version!

“And I just hope all trans and nonbinary people can get the gender-affirming resources they need because this is life-changing, and sometimes life-saving,” she continues. “So thank you so much for supporting me and we’ve got so much to catch up on! I love ya!”

Before the surgery, Mulvaney shared a sweet message to her “last selfie.”

“You did me good!” she wrote. “If we had stuck it out together forever, we would’ve made it work, but you sparked a sadness much too often, that most will never relate to.

“I wonder how I’ll look back at you in a matter of weeks?” she continued. “For now, you are still a friend. Thank you for listening to my needs and taking one for the team. Please don’t feel like you failed– I can assure you it’s me it’s not you.”
