Sex Education star Emma Mackey says she will not be coming back for another season of the series. “I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.”
Sorry Sex Education fans, Maeve is moving on from Moordale High to bigger things. Fans can also expect to see Mackey less in season four which is currently filming.
“It’s a bit more sporadic because we have more characters. So there’s… I’m not in it as consistently,” she told Radio Times. That being said, the actress is still very excited to dive into another season alongside her pals Aimee Lou Wood, Asa Butterfield and Ncuti Gatwa.
“But we’re in the middle of filming now, and I’m excited to be back,” she added. “And yeah, I’m intrigued to know what’s going to happen — because I also don’t know. I’m also finding out as we go along, so it’ll be fun!”

Mackey and Other Cast Members Leaving the Show
Sex Education is an LGBTQ+ inclusive Netflix series that first premiered on the service in 2019. It follows Otis (Butterfield) and his friends who start a makeshift sex education clinic at their school. The series has been highly-rated for it’s fresh plot, hilarious characters, and authentic representation.
Since making her acting debut in the Netflix drama, Mackey has been rising to Hollywood stardom. She recently starred in Kenneth Branagh’s whodunnit Death on the Nile, Frances O’Connor’s Emily as Emily Brontë, and is playing a Margot Robbie doppelgänger in the upcoming Barbie movie. She also took home the BAFTA Rising Star Award. Though we are sad to see her go, we are so excited to see what Mackey will do next.
Unfortunately, Mackey is not the only leading cast member to leave the series ahead of season five. Gatwa will also say goodbye to his character, Eric Effiong, at the end of season four.
In better news, he will join Mackey in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and will play the first gay, Black Doctor Who.
