Billy Eichner shares the first trailer for his upcoming film, Bros, exclusively with LGBTQ+ media organizations.

From the mind of comedian and actor Billy Eichner (Billy on the Street, 2019’s The Lion King, Difficult People) is Bros, a smart, swoony, and heartfelt comedy about how hard it is to find another tolerable human being to go through life with.

Let’s Talk About the Bros Trailer

The trailer starts with Billy’s character Bobby Leiber, a podcaster who’s tasked with writing a gay rom-com by big-name movie producers. Yes, it’s about to get very meta in here. Leiber’s character then complains about how creating a gay rom-com that straight couples can enjoy is easier said than done.

“Something a straight guy might like?” Leiber says in the trailer. “Am I gonna be in the middle of some high-speed chase and all of a sudden fall in love with Ice Cube? Am I gonna get butt-f*cked by Jason Mamoa while we’re both worrying about a volcano?”

One of our favorite lines from the trailer is when Leiber calls out Hollywood’s habit of avoiding LGBTQ+ sex scenes.

“No scenes where two guys are about to hook up and all of a sudden the camera conveniently pulls away.”

We’re looking at you Call Me By Your Name. But that definitely won’t be the case for this film. Bros is rated “R” for “strong sexual content, language throughout, and some drug use.” The rating is justified in the spicy trailer, which shows a brief foursome scene between Eichner, Luke Macfarlane’s character, and two other men.

The cast also includes Ts Madison (The Ts Madison Experience), Monica Raymund (Chicago Fire), Guillermo Díaz (Scandal), Guy Branum (The Other Two), and Amanda Bearse (Married …with Children).

Eichner Did Not Come to Play

Bros is a groundbreaking film for multiple reasons. Not only is Eichner the first openly gay man to co-write and star in his own major studio film, but the movie also has an entirely LGBTQIA+ cast, and is the first gay rom-com to ever be released by a major studio.

“And while it’s insane to me that it took this long to get this movie made, it’s still incredibly exciting to me – and a real sign of progress – that the same studio making movies like Jurassic World and The Fast and the Furious is also releasing this R rated gay rom-com with an all LGBTQ+ cast, and with as much passion and enthusiasm as they release those other films, Eichner said in a statement. “It’s taken way too long. I wish we had a movie like Bros when I was a kid – but I’m so excited and proud that this day has finally come!”

So mark your calendars because Bros is a movie you won’t want to miss. Did we mention it’s incredibly meta? Just look at the last line of the trailer.

“Anyway, it doesn’t matter. I’m not the right person to write a rom-com anyway.”

In addition to Eichner, Bros is created by filmmaker Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and producer Judd Apatow (The King of Staten Island, The Big Sick).
